Feature selection and novelty in computational aesthetics
[Abstract] An approach for exploring novelty in expression-based evolutionary art systems is presented. The framework is composed of a feature extractor, a classifier, an evolutionary engine and a supervisor. The evolutionary engine exploits shortcomings of the classifier, generating misclassified instances. These instances update the training set and the classifier is re-trained. This iterative process forces the evolutionary algorithm to explore new paths leading to the creation of novel imagery. The experiments presented and analyzed herein explore different feature selection methods and indicate the validity of the approach.Portugal. Infrared behavior of interacting bosons at zero temperature
We review the infrared behavior of interacting bosons at zero temperature.
After a brief discussion of the Bogoliubov approximation and the breakdown of
perturbation theory due to infrared divergences, we present two approaches that
are free of infrared divergences -- Popov's hydrodynamic theory and the
non-perturbative renormalization group -- and allow us to obtain the exact
infrared behavior of the correlation functions. We also point out the
connection between the infrared behavior in the superfluid phase and the
critical behavior at the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition in the

Inspiratory fraction and exercise impairment in COPD patients GOLD stages II-III
The inspiratory-to-total lung capacity ratio or inspiratory fraction (inspiratory capacity (IC)/total lung capacity (TLC)) may be functionally more representative than traditional indices of resting airflow limitation and lung hyperinflation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).In the present retrospective study, a comparison was made of the individual performance of post-bronchodilator IC, IC/TLC and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) in predicting a severely reduced peak oxygen uptake (V'o(2); < 60% predicted) in 44 COPD patients Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease stages II-III (post-bronchodilator FEV1 ranging from 31-79% pred).Patients with lower IC/TLC values (<= 0.28) showed increased lung volumes and reduced exercise capacity as compared with other subjects. Following a multiple linear regression analysis, only IC/TLC and FEV1 remained as independent predictors of V'o(2) (r(2)=0.33). Precise determination of stellar parameters of the ZZ Ceti and DAZ white dwarf GD 133 through asteroseismology
An increasing number of white dwarf stars show atmospheric chemical
composition polluted by heavy elements accreted from debris disk material. The
existence of such debris disks strongly suggests the presence of one or more
planet(s) whose gravitational interaction with rocky planetesimals is
responsible for their disruption by tidal effect. The ZZ Ceti pulsator and
polluted DAZ white dwarf GD 133 is a good candidate for searching for such a
potential planet. We started in 2011 a photometric follow-up of its pulsations.
As a result of this work in progress, we used the data gathered from 2011 to
2015 to make an asteroseismological analysis of GD 133, providing the star
parameters from a best fit model with / = 0.630 0.002,
= 12400 K 70 K, log() = -2.00 0.02,
log() = -4.50 0.02 and determining a rotation period of

Photoproduction at collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC
We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Photoproduction at
collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC'' held at the European Centre
for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento)
from January 15 to 19, 2007. The workshop gathered both theorists and
experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of high-energy
photon-induced processes at different colliders (HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as
well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main
physics topics covered were: (i) small- QCD in photoproduction studies with
protons and in electromagnetic (aka. ultraperipheral) nucleus-nucleus
collisions, (ii) hard diffraction physics at hadron colliders, and (iii)
photon-photon collisions at very high energies: electroweak and beyond the
Standard Model processes. These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and
short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting
