The development of a pervasive Web application to alert patients based on business intelligence clinical indicators: a case study in a health institution

This paper proposes the development of a pervasive Web application based on business intelligence clinical indicators created with the data stored into the health information systems of a Portuguese health institution in the last 3 years i.e. between the beginning of 2015 and the end of 2017. With this computational tool, it is principally intended to reduce the number of appointments, surgeries, and medical examinations that were not carried out in the hospital most likely due to forgetfulness since most patients who attend this health institution are elderly people and memory loss is very common with increasing age. Therefore, patients and/or their caregivers and family members are alerted via SMS in advance and appropriately by health professionals through the Web application. This alternative is cheaper, faster, and more customizable than sending those SMS using a smartphone. Avaliação por regressão linear múltipla de terrenos na Avenida Centenário da cidade de Criciúma (SC)

Artigo submetido ao Curso de Engenharia Civil da UNESC - como requisito parcial para obtenção do Título de Engenheiro Civil.Este trabalho apresenta a equação de regressão com múltiplas variáveis para avaliação de terrenos da Avenida Centenário da cidade de Criciúma (SC). O modelo foi obtido em pesquisa realizada utilizando 80 dados dos terrenos que foram identificados, coletados e devidamente relacionados em planilha de vistorias, interpretados por 5 variáveis independentes formadores de valores, sendo elas a área total, frente, número de pavimentos, distância terminal Próspera e distância terminal Central, buscando o comportamento do mercado imobiliário de terrenos da Avenida Centenário. Após algumas simulações em busca do melhor ajustamento da equação de regressão, o coeficiente de correlação obtido foi de 88,61%, indicando uma forte correlação entre a variável dependente e as independentes. A equação gerada apresentou-se de fácil aplicabilidade e compatível com a realidade do mercado imobiliário dos terrenos da Avenida Centenário da cidade de Criciúma (SC)

A proof of concept of a mobile health application to support professionals in a portuguese nursing home

Over the past few years, the rapidly aging population has been posing several challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. Consequently, in Portugal, nursing homes have been getting a higher demand, and health professionals working in these facilities are overloaded with work. Moreover, the lack of health information and communication technology (HICT) and the use of unsophisticated methods, such as paper, in nursing homes to clinically manage residents lead to more errors and are time-consuming. Thus, this article proposes a proof of concept of a mobile health (mHealth) application developed for the health professionals working in a Portuguese nursing home to support them at the point-of-care, namely to manage and have access to information and to help them schedule, perform, and digitally record their tasks. Additionally, clinical and performance business intelligence (BI) indicators to assist the decision-making process are also defined. Thereby, this solution aims to introduce technological improvements into the facility to improve healthcare delivery and, by taking advantage of the benefits provided by these improvements, lessen some of the workload experienced by health professionals, reduce time-waste and errors, and, ultimately, enhance elders’ quality of life and improve the quality of the services provided.This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2019

Inclusão de jovens adultos com dificuldades intelectuais e desenvolvimentais no ensino superior: contributos da literatura no contexto europeu

Higher education is recognized in our society as one of the best avenues for rewarding employment and associated with significant benefits. People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, with limitations in intellectual functioning and Adaptive Behavior, although aiming to continue their academic education, are one of the most socially excluded groups, facing prejudice that hinder their access to Higher Education. Based on a narrative literature review it is intended to gain an understanding of the process of inclusion of these students that is taking place in European higher education institutions, from the contributions of the literature. Thus, it aims to (i) describe features of programs operating in Europe; (ii) identify pedagogical methodologies that have facilitated the success of the teaching and learning process; and (iii) identify effects of their participation in programs offered by European institutions. This study shows that, with appropriate methodologies, it is possible to include people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Higher Education. We underline the importance of the positive effects and outcomes of improving employability from these inclusive curriculum initiatives.O Ensino Superior (ES) é reconhecido na nossa sociedade como um dos melhores caminhos para um emprego gratificante, estando associado a benefícios significativos. As pessoas com Dificuldades Intelectuais e Desenvolvimentais, com limitações ao nível do funcionamento intelectual e do comportamento adaptativo, apesar de ambicionarem continuar a sua formação académica, constituem um dos grupos socialmente mais excluídos, deparando-se com preconceitos que impedem o seu acesso ao Ensino Superior. Com base numa revisão da literatura narrativa, pretende-se obter uma compreensão do processo de inclusão destes estudantes que está a decorrer em instituições do ES europeias, a partir dos contributos da literatura. Assim, objetiva-se (i) descrever características de programas a funcionar na Europa; (ii) identificar metodologias pedagógicas que têm facilitado o sucesso do processo de ensino e aprendizagem; e (iii) identificar efeitos da participação destes estudantes em programas oferecidos por instituições europeias. Este estudo evidencia que, com as metodologias apropriadas, é possível a inclusão de pessoas com Dificuldades Intelectuais e Desenvolvimentais no Ensino Superior. Sublinhamos a importância dos efeitos positivos e dos resultados relacionados com a melhoria da empregabilidade provenientes destas iniciativas curriculares inclusivas

Loneliness in leadership: a study applied to the Portuguese banking sector

In this study, we analyzed the feeling of loneliness in leadership in the Portuguese banking sector, seeking to identify variables that may instigate this feeling, such as gender, age, academic qualifications, function/position, number of working hours per week, and years of work/seniority, and the consequences that it may have, namely in terms of the decision-making process and the motivation of leaders. For this study, a quantitative research tool was used in the form of a questionnaire, which was applied to a group of collaborators, with leadership responsibilities, of the financial institutions authorized to operate in Portugal. We concluded that while some variables influence the feeling of loneliness in leadership (years of work, position, and academic qualifications), others do not (gender, age, and hours of work per week). We also found a relationship between loneliness and demotivation and proved that the feeling of loneliness affects leadership but does not affect decision making. The results are relevant, especially for the banking sector, which has undergone major restructuring in the Portuguese economy and needs guidance to face the country’s financial challenges
