    Openness to World Music Predicts Adaptation to a New Culture among Student Sojourners

    Student sojourners temporarily live in a foreign country to pursue higher education. Research has shown that student sojourners’ openness to new experience and cultural values predict their adaptation to the host culture. However, it is unclear whether music – a major medium of cultural communication – also plays a role in adaptation to a host culture. This study examined whether student sojourners’ world music open-earedness (a willingness to explore, listen to, tolerate, and learn about music from diverse cultures) and functions of music in intercultural settings (the psychosocial reasons people engage with music) predict psychological and sociocultural adaptation. Seventy-six student sojourners in Australia reported their musical inclinations and adaptation to Australian society. World music open-earedness was significantly correlated with psychological and sociocultural adaptation. However, multiple regression modelling revealed that after statistically controlling for personal characteristics (e.g., age, musical training), personality traits (e.g., openness), and acculturation strategies, psychological adaptation was predicted by the music functions ‘arousal and activation’ and ‘self-reflection’, whereas sociocultural adaptation was predicted by world music open-earedness and the music function ‘arousal and activation’. Mechanisms that account for these associations and implications for identifying at-risk international students are discussed

    Using Verb Extension to Gauge Children’s Verb Meaning Construals: The Case of Chinese

    Verb extension is a crucial gauge of the acquisition of verb meaning. In English, studies suggest that young children show conservative extension. An important test of whether an early conservative extension is a general phenomenon or a function of the input language is made possible by Chinese, a language in which verbs are more frequent and acquired earlier. This study tested whether 3-year-old Chinese children extended a group of familiar verbs that specify various ways to carry objects. Shown videos that portrayed typical, mid-typical, or atypical carrying actions (as verified by Chinese adults), children were asked to judge whether they were examples of specific Chinese carry verbs. Children’s verb extensions were mostly limited to typical exemplars, suggesting that an early conservative extension may be universal. Furthermore, extension breadth was related to the onset of verb production: verbs acquired earlier elicited more extension judgments than those acquired later

    Efficient privacy preserving predicate encryption with fine-grained searchable capability for cloud storage

    With the fast development in Cloud storage technologies and ever increasing use of Cloud data centres, data privacy and confidentiality has become a must. Indeed, Cloud data centres store each time more sensitive data such as personal data, organizational and enterprise data, transactional data, etc. However, achieving confidentiality with flexible searchable capability is a challenging issue. In this article, we show how to construct an efficient predicate encryption with fine-grained searchable capability. Predicate Encryption (PEPE) can achieve more sophisticated and flexible functionality compared with traditional public key encryption. We propose an efficient predicate encryption scheme by utilizing the dual system encryption technique, which can also be proved to be IND-AH-CPA (indistinguishable under chosen plain-text attack for attribute-hiding) secure without random oracle. We also carefully analyse the relationship between predicate encryption and searchable encryption. To that end, we introduce a new notion of Public-Key Encryption with Fine-grained Keyword Search (PEFKSPEFKS). Our results show that an IND-AH-CPA secure PE scheme can be used to construct an IND-PEFKS-CPA (indistinguishable under chosen plain-text attack for public-key encryption with fine-grained keyword search) secure PEFKSPEFKS scheme. A new transformation of PE-to-PEFKS is also proposed and used to construct an efficient PEFKSPEFKS scheme based on the transformation from the proposed PEPE scheme. Finally, we design a new framework for supporting privacy preserving predicate encryption with fine-grained searchable capability for Cloud storage. Compared to most prominent frameworks, our framework satisfies more features altogether and can serve as a basis for developing such frameworks for Cloud data centres.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Dynamic changes of rumen bacteria and their fermentative ability in high-producing dairy cows during the late perinatal period

    BackgroundHigh-producing dairy cows face varying degrees of metabolic stress and challenges during the late perinatal period, resulting in ruminal bacteria abundance and their fermentative ability occurring as a series of changes. However, the dynamic changes are still not clear.Aims/methodsTen healthy, high-producing Holstein dairy cows with similar body conditions and the same parity were selected, and ruminal fluid from the dairy cows at postpartum 0, 7, 14, and 21 d was collected before morning feeding. 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing, GC-MS/MS targeted metabolomics, and UPLC-MS/MS untargeted metabolomics were applied in the study to investigate the dynamic changes within 21 d postpartum.ResultsThe results displayed that the structures of ruminal bacteria were significantly altered from 0 to 7 d postpartum (R = 0.486, P = 0.002), reflecting the significantly declining abundances of Euryarchaeota and Chloroflexi phyla and Christensenellaceae, Methanobrevibacter, and Flexilinea genera (P < 0.05) and the obviously ascending abundances of Ruminococcaceae, Moryella, Pseudobutyrivibrio, and Prevotellaceae genera at 7 d postpartum (P < 0.05). The structures of ruminal bacteria also varied significantly from 7 to 14 d postpartum (R = 0.125, P = 0.022), reflecting the reducing abundances of Christensenellaceae, Ruminococcaceae, and Moryella genera (P < 0.05), and the elevating abundances of Sharpea and Olsenella genera at 14 d postpartum (P < 0.05). The metabolic profiles of ruminal SCFAs were obviously varied from 0 to 7 d postpartum, resulting in higher levels of propionic acid, butyric acid, and valeric acid at 7 d postpartum (P < 0.05); the metabolic profiles of other ruminal metabolites were significantly shifted from 0 to 7 d postpartum, with 27 significantly elevated metabolites and 35 apparently reduced metabolites (P < 0.05). The correlation analysis indicated that propionic acid was positively correlated with Prevotellaceae and Ruminococcaceae (P < 0.05), negatively correlated with Methanobrevibacter (P < 0.01); butyric acid was positively associated with Prevotellaceae, Ruminococcaceae, and Pseudobutyrivibrio (P < 0.05), negatively associated with Christensenellaceae (P < 0.01); valeric acid was positively linked with Prevotellaceae and Ruminococcaceae (P < 0.05); pyridoxal was positively correlated with Flexilinea and Methanobrevibacter (P < 0.05) and negatively correlated with Ruminococcaceae (P < 0.01); tyramine was negatively linked with Ruminococcaceae (P < 0.01).ConclusionThe findings contribute to the decision of nutritional management and prevention of metabolic diseases in high-producing dairy cows during the late perinatal period

    Action Real-Time Strategy Gaming Experience Related to Increased Attentional Resources: An Attentional Blink Study

    Action real-time strategy gaming (ARSG) is a cognitively demanding task which requires attention, sensorimotor skills, team cooperation, and strategy-making abilities. A recent study found that ARSG experts had superior visual selective attention (VSA) for detecting the location of a moving object that could appear in one of 24 different peripheral locations (Qiu et al., 2018), suggesting that ARSG experience is related to improvements in the spatial component of VSA. However, the influence of ARSG experience on the temporal component of VSA—the detection of an item among a sequence of items presented consecutively and quickly at a single location—still remains understudied. Using behavioral and electrophysiological measures, this study examined whether ARSG experts had superior temporal VSA performance compared to non-experts in an attentional blink (AB) task, which is typically used to examine temporal VSA. The results showed that the experts outperformed the non-experts in their detection rates of targets. Furthermore, compared to the non-experts, the experts had faster information processing as indicated by earlier P3 peak latencies in an AB period, more attentional resources distributed to targets as indicated by stronger P3 amplitudes, and a more flexible deployment of attentional resources. These findings suggest that experts were less prone to the AB effect. Thus, long-term ARSG experience is related to improvements in temporal VSA. The current findings support the benefit of video gaming experience on the development of VSA

    Membrane-Located Expression of Thioesterase From Acinetobacter baylyi Enhances Free Fatty Acid Production With Decreased Toxicity in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

    It has been previously reported that photosynthetic production of extracellular free fatty acids (FFAs) in cyanobacteria was realized by thioesterases (TesA) mediated hydrolysis of fatty acyl-ACP in cytosol and excretion of the FFA outside of the cell. However, two major issues related to the genetically modified strains need to be addressed before the scale-up commercial application becomes possible: namely, the toxicity of FFAs, and the diversity of carbon lengths of fatty acids that could mimic the fossil fuel. To address those issues, we hypothesized that generating FFAs near membrane could facilitate rapid excretion of the FFA outside of the cell and thus decrease toxicity caused by intracellular FFAs in the cytosolic expression of thioesterase. To realize this, we localized a leaderless thioesterase (AcTesA) from Acinetobacter baylyi on the cytosolic side of the inner membrane of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 using a membrane scaffolding system. The engineered strain with AcTesA on its membrane (mAcT) produced extracellular FFAs up to 171.9 ± 13.22 mg⋅L-1 compared with 40.24 ± 10.94 and 1.904 ± 0.158 mg⋅L-1 in the cytosol-expressed AcTesA (AcT) and wild-type (WT) strains, respectively. Moreover, the mAcT strain generated around 1.5 and 1.9 times less reactive oxygen species than AcT and WT, respectively. Approximately 78% of total FFAs were secreted with an average rate of 1 mg⋅L-1⋅h-1, which was higher than 0.44 mg⋅L-1⋅h-1 reported previously. In the case of mAcT strain, 60% of total secreted FFAs was monounsaturated (C18:1) which is the preferable biodiesel component. Therefore, the engineered mAcT strain shows enhanced FFAs production with less toxicity which is highly desirable for biodiesel production

    The Influence of Action Video Gaming Experience on the Perception of Emotional Faces and Emotional Word Meaning

    Action video gaming (AVG) experience has been found related to sensorimotor and attentional development. However, the influence of AVG experience on the development of emotional perception skills is still unclear. Using behavioral and ERP measures, this study examined the relationship between AVG experience and the ability to decode emotional faces and emotional word meanings. AVG experts and amateurs completed an emotional word-face Stroop task prior to (the pregaming phase) and after (the postgaming phase) a 1 h AVG session. Within-group comparisons showed that after the 1 h AVG session, a more negative N400 was observed in both groups of participants, and a more negative N170 was observed in the experts. Between-group comparisons showed that the experts had a greater change of N170 and N400 amplitudes across phases than the amateurs. The results suggest that both the 1 h and long-term AVG experiences may be related to an increased difficulty of emotional perception. Furthermore, certain behavioral and ERP measures showed neither within- nor between-group differences, suggesting that the relationship between AVG experience and emotional perception skills still needs further research

    Action Real-Time Strategy Gaming Experience Related to Enhanced Capacity of Visual Working Memory

    Action real-time strategy gaming (ARSG)—a major genre of action video gaming (AVG)—has both action and strategy elements. ARSG requires attention, visual working memory (VWM), sensorimotor skills, team cooperation, and strategy-making abilities, thus offering promising insights into the learning-induced plasticity. However, it is yet unknown whether the ARSG experience is related to the development of VWM capacity. Using both behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) measurements, this study tested whether ARSG experts had larger VWM capacity than non-experts in a change detection task. The behavioral results showed that ARSG experts had higher accuracy and larger VWM capacity than non-experts. In addition, the ERP results revealed that the difference wave of the contralateral delay activity (CDA) component (size 4–size 2) elicited by experts was significantly larger than that of non-experts, suggesting that the VWM capacity was higher in experts than in non-experts. Thus, the findings suggested that prolonged ARSG experience is correlative with the enhancement of VWM
