Landscape context mediates the relationship between plant functional traits and decomposition
Aims: It has been well demonstrated that several interacting endogenous and exogenous factors influence decomposition. However, teasing apart the direct and indirect effects of these factors to predict decomposition patterns in heterogenous landscapes remains a key challenge. Methods: At 157 locations in a temperate forest, we measured decomposition of a standard substrate (filter paper) over two years, the landscape context in which decomposition took place, and the functional composition of the woody species that contributed leaf litter to the forest floor where litter bags were placed. We tested for direct and indirect effects of landscape context and direct effects of forest functional composition on decay using structural equation modelling. Results: We found that landscape context had direct effects on decay and indirect effects on decay via its influence on the functional composition of the surrounding forest. Forest functional composition also had direct effects on decay, but these effects decreased or disappeared completely over time. Moreover, community weighted mean trait values were better predictors of decay than functional dispersion of leaf traits, and leaf nitrogen content and carbon content were better predictors of decay than leaf dry matter content or leaf toughness. Conclusions: Our results highlight the importance of an integrative approach that examines the direct and indirect effects of multiple factors for understanding and predicting decomposition patterns across heterogenous landscapes
Natural Notation for the Domestic Internet of Things
This study explores the use of natural language to give instructions that
might be interpreted by Internet of Things (IoT) devices in a domestic `smart
home' environment. We start from the proposition that reminders can be
considered as a type of end-user programming, in which the executed actions
might be performed either by an automated agent or by the author of the
reminder. We conducted an experiment in which people wrote sticky notes
specifying future actions in their home. In different conditions, these notes
were addressed to themselves, to others, or to a computer agent.We analyse the
linguistic features and strategies that are used to achieve these tasks,
including the use of graphical resources as an informal visual language. The
findings provide a basis for design guidance related to end-user development

Determining the association between fibromyalgia, the gut microbiome and its biomarkers: A systematic review
Background: The association between fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome is well-established. Alterations inthe composition and diversity of the gut microbiome in irritable bowel syndrome have been reported, however,this association is poorly understood in fibromyalgia.Our aim was to summarise the research reporting on the gastrointestinal microbiome and its biomarkers in peoplewith fibromyalgia.Methods: A systematic review of published original research reporting on the gastrointestinal microbiota and itsbiomarkers in adults with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia was undertaken.Results: From 4771 studies, 11 met our inclusion criteria and were separated into four main groups: papersreporting Helicobacter pylori; other gut bacterial markers; metabolomics and other biomarkers, which includedintestinal permeability and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.Conclusion: The results suggest there is a paucity of quality research in this area, with indications that the gutmicrobiota may play a role in fibromyalgia within the emerging field of the gut-musculoskeletal axis. Furtherinvestigations into the relationship between the gut microbiota, gut dysfunction and fibromyalgia are warranted

Weak Exciton-Phonon Coupling in CdSe Nanoplatelets from Quantitative Resonance Raman Intensity Analysis
Resonance
Raman spectra, cross sections, and depolarization ratios have been
measured for 4.5 monolayer thick CdSe nanoplatelets dispersed in chloroform.
Five excitation wavelengths between 514.5 and 476.5 nm were employed.
The resonance Raman spectra are dominated by the longitudinal optical
(LO) phonon near 201 cm–1 and its overtone, as in
CdSe quantum dots. The absolute scattering intensity is much higher
for excitation on resonance with the sharp, lowest-energy heavy-hole
to conduction band transition than with higher energy transitions,
decreasing by about a factor of 30 between 514.5 and 496.5 nm excitation.
The LO phonon overtone is weak directly on resonance with the heavy-hole
transition but much stronger at higher excitation energies, a result
that is reproduced by simulations of the spectra using standard resonance
Raman intensity theory. The absolute Raman cross sections imply a
Huang–Rhys parameter for the LO phonon of about 0.08 on resonance
with the lowest heavy-hole transition. This is a factor of 2–3
lower than found previously for CdSe quantum dots. The depolarization
ratios on resonance with the lowest heavy-hole excitonic transition
are slightly higher than expected for a degenerate, plane-polarized
transition even when the local field factors are taken into account
Comments on scaling limits of 4d N=2 theories
We revisit the study of the maximally singular point in the Coulomb branch of
4d N=2 SU(N) gauge theory with N_f=2n flavors for N_f= 2, we find
that the low-energy physics is described by two non-trivial superconformal
field theories coupled to a magnetic SU(2) gauge group which is infrared free.
(In the special case n=2, one of these theories is a theory of free
hypermultiplets.) This observation removes a possible counter example to a
conjectured a-theorem.Comment: 13 page
YY1 negatively regulates mouse myelin proteolipid protein (Plp1) gene expression in oligodendroglial cells
YY1 (Yin and Yang 1) is a multifunctional, ubiquitously expressed, zinc finger protein that can act as a transcriptional activator, repressor, or initiator element binding protein. Previous studies have shown that YY1 modulates the activity of reporter genes driven by the myelin PLP (proteolipid protein) (PLP1/Plp1) promoter. However, it is known that Plp1 intron 1 DNA contains regulatory elements that are required for the dramatic increase in gene activity, coincident with the active myelination period of CNS (central nervous system) development. The intron in mouse contains multiple prospective YY1 target sites including one within a positive regulatory module called the ASE (anti-silencer/enhancer) element. Results presented here demonstrate that YY1 has a negative effect on the activity of a Plp1-lacZ fusion gene [PLP(+)Z] in an immature oligodendroglial cell line (Oli-neu) that is mediated through sequences present in Plp1 intron 1 DNA. Yet YY1 does not bind to its alleged site in the ASE (even though the protein is capable of recognizing a target site in the promoter), indicating that the down-regulation of PLP(+)Z activity by YY1 in Oli-neu cells does not occur through a direct interaction of YY1 with the ASE sequence. Previous studies with Yy1 conditional knockout mice have demonstrated that YY1 is essential for the differentiation of oligodendrocyte progenitors. Nevertheless, the current study suggests that YY1 functions as a repressor (not an activator) of Plp1 gene expression in immature oligodendrocytes. Perhaps YY1 functions to keep the levels of PLP in check in immature cells before vast quantities of the protein are needed in mature myelinating oligodendrocytes
T-Branes and Monodromy
We introduce T-branes, or "triangular branes," which are novel non-abelian
bound states of branes characterized by the condition that on some loci, their
matrix of normal deformations, or Higgs field, is upper triangular. These
configurations refine the notion of monodromic branes which have recently
played a key role in F-theory phenomenology. We show how localized matter
living on complex codimension one subspaces emerge, and explain how to compute
their Yukawa couplings, which are localized in complex codimension two. Not
only do T-branes clarify what is meant by brane monodromy, they also open up a
vast array of new possibilities both for phenomenological constructions and for
purely theoretical applications. We show that for a general T-brane, the
eigenvalues of the Higgs field can fail to capture the spectrum of localized
modes. In particular, this provides a method for evading some constraints on
F-theory GUTs which have assumed that the spectral equation for the Higgs field
completely determines a local model.Comment: 110 pages, 5 figure
Patients’ use of information about medicine side effects in relation to experiences of suspected adverse drug reactions
Background
Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are common, and information about medicines is increasingly widely available to the public. However, relatively little work has explored how people use medicines information to help them assess symptoms that may be suspected ADRs.
Objective
Our objective was to determine how patients use patient information leaflets (PILs) or other medicines information sources and whether information use differs depending on experiences of suspected ADRs.
Method
This was a cross-sectional survey conducted in six National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in North West England involving medical in-patients taking at least two regular medicines prior to admission. The survey was administered via a questionnaire and covered use of the PIL and other medicines information sources, perceived knowledge about medicines risks/ADRs, experiences of suspected ADRs, plus demographic information.
Results
Of the 1,218 respondents to the survey, 18.8 % never read the PIL, whilst 6.5 % only do so if something unexpected happens. Educational level was related to perceived knowledge about medicines risks, but not to reading the PIL or seeking further information about medicines risks. Over half the respondents (56.0 %) never sought more information about possible side effects of medicines. A total of 57.2 % claimed they had experienced a suspected ADR. Of these 85.9 % were either very sure or fairly sure this was a reaction to a medicine. Over half of those experiencing a suspected ADR (53.8 %) had read the PIL, of whom 36.2 % did so before the suspected ADR occurred, the remainder afterwards. Reading the PIL helped 84.8 % of these respondents to decide they had experienced an ADR. Educational level, general knowledge of medicines risks and number of regular medicines used all increased the likelihood of experiencing an ADR.
Conclusion
More patients should be encouraged to read the PIL supplied with medicines. The results support the view that most patients feel knowledgeable about medicines risks and suspected ADRs and value information about side effects, but that reading about side effects in PILs or other medicines information sources does not lead to experiences of suspected ADRs
Tunable magnetic exchange interactions in manganese-doped inverted core/shell ZnSe/CdSe nanocrystals
Magnetic doping of semiconductor nanostructures is actively pursued for
applications in magnetic memory and spin-based electronics. Central to these
efforts is a drive to control the interaction strength between carriers
(electrons and holes) and the embedded magnetic atoms. In this respect,
colloidal nanocrystal heterostructures provide great flexibility via
growth-controlled `engineering' of electron and hole wavefunctions within
individual nanocrystals. Here we demonstrate a widely tunable magnetic sp-d
exchange interaction between electron-hole excitations (excitons) and
paramagnetic manganese ions using `inverted' core-shell nanocrystals composed
of Mn-doped ZnSe cores overcoated with undoped shells of narrower-gap CdSe.
Magnetic circular dichroism studies reveal giant Zeeman spin splittings of the
band-edge exciton that, surprisingly, are tunable in both magnitude and sign.
Effective exciton g-factors are controllably tuned from -200 to +30 solely by
increasing the CdSe shell thickness, demonstrating that strong quantum
confinement and wavefunction engineering in heterostructured nanocrystal
materials can be utilized to manipulate carrier-Mn wavefunction overlap and the

‘We have to wait in a queue for our turn quite a bit’ Examining children’s physical activity during primary physical education lessons
The overall purpose of this study was to examine children’s physical activity (PA) during primary physical education (PE). This was achieved through the following two research objectives: (1) to measure children’s PA, lesson context and teacher promotion of PA during PE lessons; and (2) to explore teachers’ and children’s perspectives on PA levels during PE lessons. Evidence suggests that children’s PA during PE is below recommended levels and further research is required to understand the reasons why. Through a mixed method design, 138 children were observed using the System for Observing Fitness and Instruction Time, 80 children participated in group interviews, and 13 teachers were interviewed, across three primary schools in England. Findings indicated that the mean percentage of lesson time allocated to moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) was 42.4% and the average lesson length was 35.3 minutes. Qualitative themes identified were: ‘knowledge and beliefs’; ‘teacher pedagogy’; and ‘teacher development’. The findings indicate that a change in perspective is needed, which includes a focus on PA during primary PE lessons. Intervention work is required that targets teachers’ knowledge and beliefs towards PE along with the development of effective teaching strategies. However, this needs to be grounded in an ecological approach which will allow researchers and schools to target the various levels of influence. It is strongly recommended that interventions are grounded in behaviour change theory, as this study indicates that sharing knowledge about pedagogical strategies to increase children’s MVPA does not necessarily produce changes in teachers’ behaviours
