    Neutron scattering study of the orientational disorder and phase transitions in barium carbonate.

    Orientational disorder of the molecular carbonate anions in BaCO3, which occurs naturally as the mineral witherite, has been studied using a combination of neutron total scattering analysed by the Reverse Monte Carlo method and molecular dynamics simulations. The primary focus is on the phase transition to the cubic phase, which assumes a rocksalt structure (Strukturbericht type B1) with highly disordered orientations consistent with the mismatch between the site (m3m) and molecular (3/m) symmetries. Both experiment and simulation show a high degree of disorder, with the C-O bond orientation distribution never exceeding 25% variation from that of a completely uniform distribution, although there are differences between the two methods regarding the nature of these variations. Molecular dynamics simulations are also reported for the analogous phase transitions in the very important mineral calcite, CaCO3. The combination of the simulations and comparison with BaCO3 shows that the properties of calcite at all temperatures within its stability field are affected mostly by the onset of orientational disorder associated with the high-temperature cubic phase, even though this lies outside the stability field of calcite. This is a new understanding of calcite, which previously had been interpreted purely in terms of the phase transition to an intermediate partially-disordered phase. Finally, we also found that witherite itself appears to support the development of orientational disorder on heating, with the simulations showing a sequence of phase transitions that explain the much larger thermal expansion of one axis

    Role of the mesoamygdaloid dopamine projection in emotional learning

    Amygdala dopamine is crucially involved in the acquisition of Pavlovian associations, as measured via conditioned approach to the location of the unconditioned stimulus (US). However, learning begins before skeletomotor output, so this study assessed whether amygdala dopamine is also involved in earlier 'emotional' learning. A variant of the conditioned reinforcement (CR) procedure was validated where training was restricted to curtail the development of selective conditioned approach to the US location, and effects of amygdala dopamine manipulations before training or later CR testing assessed. Experiment 1a presented a light paired (CS+ group) or unpaired (CS- group) with a US. There were 1, 2 or 10 sessions, 4 trials per session. Then, the US was removed, and two novel levers presented. One lever (CR+) presented the light, and lever pressing was recorded. Experiment 1b also included a tone stimulus. Experiment 2 applied intra-amygdala R(+) 7-OH-DPAT (10 nmol/1.0 A mu l/side) before two training sessions (Experiment 2a) or a CR session (Experiment 2b). For Experiments 1a and 1b, the CS+ group preferred the CR+ lever across all sessions. Conditioned alcove approach during 1 or 2 training sessions or associated CR tests was low and nonspecific. In Experiment 2a, R(+) 7-OH-DPAT before training greatly diminished lever pressing during a subsequent CR test, preferentially on the CR+ lever. For Experiment 2b, R(+) 7-OH-DPAT infusions before the CR test also reduced lever pressing. Manipulations of amygdala dopamine impact the earliest stage of learning in which emotional reactions may be most prevalent

    Colossal Pressure-Induced Softening in Scandium Fluoride

    The counter-intuitive phenomenon of pressure-induced softening in materials is likely to be caused by the same dynamical behaviour that produces negative thermal expansion. Through a combination of molecular dynamics simulation on an idealised model and neutron diffraction at variable temperature and pressure, we show the existence of extraordinary and unprecedented pressure-induced softening in the negative thermal expansion material scandium fluoride, ScF3_3, with values of the pressure-derivative of the bulk modulus BB, B=B/PB^\prime = \partial B / \partial P, reaching as low as 40±1-40 \pm 1

    Charge state switching of Cu acceptors in ZnO nanorods

    © 2017 Author(s). Undoped and Ga-doped ZnO nanorods both exhibit an intense green luminescence (GL) band centered at ∼2.4 eV. Unlike the defect-related GL in undoped nanorods, the GL band in Ga-doped nanorods displays a periodic fine structure separated by 72 meV, which consists of doublets with an energy spacing of 30 ± 3 meV. The emergence of the structured GL is due to the Cu+ state being stabilized by the rise in the Fermi level above the 0/- (Cu2+/Cu+) charge transfer level as a result of Ga donor incorporation. From a combination of optical characterization and simulation using the Brownian oscillator model, the doublet fine structures are shown to originate from two hole transitions with the Cu+ state located at 390 meV above the valence band

    A Phase 1 study of ADI-PEG20 (pegargiminase) combined with cisplatin and pemetrexed in ASS1-negative metastatic uveal melanoma

    Metastatic uveal melanoma (UM) is a devastating disease with few treatment options. We evaluated the safety, tolerability and preliminary activity of arginine depletion using pegylated arginine deiminase (ADI‐PEG20; pegargiminase) combined with pemetrexed (Pem) and cisplatin (Cis) chemotherapy in a phase 1 dose‐expansion study of patients with argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS1)‐deficient metastatic UM. Eligible patients received up to six cycles of Pem (500 mg/m(2)) and Cis (75 mg/m(2)) every 3 weeks plus weekly intramuscular ADI (36 mg/m(2)), followed by maintenance ADI until progression (NCT02029690). Ten of fourteen ASS1‐deficient patients with UM liver metastases and a median of one line of prior immunotherapy received ADIPemCis. Only one ≥ grade 3 adverse event of febrile neutropenia was reported. Seven patients had stable disease with a median progression‐free survival of 3.0 months (range, 1.3–8.1) and a median overall survival of 11.5 months (range, 3.2–36.9). Despite anti‐ADI‐PEG20 antibody emergence, plasma arginine concentrations remained suppressed by 18 weeks with a reciprocal increase in plasma citrulline. Tumour rebiopsies at progression revealed ASS1 re‐expression as an escape mechanism. ADIPemCis was well tolerated with modest disease stabilisation in metastatic UM. Further investigation of arginine deprivation is indicated in UM including combinations with immune checkpoint blockade and additional anti‐metabolite strategies
