Harm, authority and generalizability: further experiments on the moral/conventional distinction
Certain researchers in the field of moral psychology, following Turiel (1983), argue that children and adults in different cultures make a distinction between moral and conventional transgressions. One interpretation of the theory holds that moral transgressions elicit a signature moral response pattern while conventional transgressions elicit a signature conventional response pattern (e.g., Kelly et al. 2007). Four dimensions distinguish the moral response pattern from the conventional response pattern (e.g., Nichols 2004). 1. HARM/JUSTICE/RIGHTS – Subjects justify the wrongness of moral transgressions by stating that they involve a victim that is harmed, whose rights have been violated or who has been subject to an injustice. Conventional transgressions do not involve a victim that is harmed, whose rights have been violated or who has been subject to an injustice. 2. AUTHORITY – Subjects judge moral transgressions as wrong independent of structures of authority while the wrongness of conventional transgressions can be changed by an authority. 3. GENERALIZABILITY – Subjects judge moral transgressions as generalizably wrong, i.e., independent of time and place, while conventional transgressions’ wrongness depends on time and place. 4. SERIOUSNESS – Subjects judge moral transgressions as more seriously wrong than conventional transgressions. Others have criticized this view for a diversity of reasons. Relevant for our purposes is that, first, there appear to be cultural differences in what constitutes a moral transgression (e.g., Haidt et al. 1993) and second, it is unclear what the exact hypotheses are, surrounding this supposed moral/conventional distinction (e.g., Stich et al. 2009). I will present planned and ongoing experimental research that investigates two specific problems we encountered in the moral-conventional literature. First of all, we cannot draw reliable conclusions from previous work about the generalizability of the wrongness of different kinds of transgressions. In previous experiments, differences in time and place are often but not always confounded with a variety of other differences. For example, Huebner et al. (2010) ask participants if the depicted act would be OK for someone who lived elsewhere where everyone else did this. Moreover, when varying time and/or place, participants are likely to assume that other things differ as well. In our study, we vary time and/or place in a variety of scenarios in order to investigate what assumptions participants make when confronted with the generalizability question. Second, it is an open question as to what extent any transgression will universally elicit one of the two signature response patterns. In our study, we make use of existing differences in participants’ value hierarchy to test this. For one and the same scenario, we compare the response of participants for whom authority is an important value with the results of participants for whom authority is not an important value, in order to see if there are differences in the two groups’ response patterns. Elevation leads to altruistic behavior.
Feelings of elevation, elicited by witnessing another person perform a good deed, have been hypothesized to motivate a desire to help others. However, despite growing interest in the determinants of prosocial behavior, there is only limited evidence that elevation leads to increases in altruistic behavior. In two experiments, we tested the relationship between elevation and helping behavior. Prior to measuring helping behavior, we measured elevation among participants in an elevation-inducing condition and control conditions in order to determine whether witnessing altruistic behavior elicited elevation. In Experiment 1, participants experiencing elevation were more likely to volunteer for a subsequent unpaid study than were participants in a neutral state. In Experiment 2, participants experiencing elevation spent approximately twice as long helping the experimenter with a tedious task as participants experiencing mirth or a neutral emotional state. Further, feelings of elevation, but not feelings of amusement or happiness, predicted the amount of helping. Together, these results provide evidence that witnessing another person's altruistic behavior elicits elevation, a discrete emotion that, in turn, leads to tangible increases in altruism

Teknologi rapid prototyping (RP) adalah teknologi menghasilkan prototype sebuah produk dengan cepat dan biaya terjangkau sebelum produk industri diproduksi secara masal. Banyak pengembangan bentuk dan dimensi produk yang semakin kompleks dengan geometri yang tidak mungkin dikerjakan dengan proses permesinan konvesional. Salah satu cara untuk menghasilkan produk adalah dengan menggunakan teknologi rapid prototyping (RP). Salah satu teknik RP adalah dengan metode Multi Material Deposition Indirect Sintering (MMDIs). Penelitian ini merupakan lanjutan dari proses sinter konvensional dimana MMDIs tidak memerlukan kompaksi tetapi menggunakan besi cor mesh 100 dan 150 sebagai supporting powder untuk menyangga serbuk Ni mesh 10 µm. Dengan variasi suhu sintering 870OC, 900OC, 930OC, produk hasil MMDIs serbuk Ni mempengaruhi karakteristik seperti kekuatan tarik karena semakin lama proses sintering kekuatannya semakin besar yaitu 42.83 MPa, densitas sebesar7.5 gr/cm3, penyusutan besar sebesar 35.33%, kemurnian Ni menurun menjadi 75% dan konduktivitas termal Cu hasil sintering sebesar 112.5 W/m.0C.

Establishing the precise evolutionary history of a gene improves prediction of disease-causing missense mutations
PURPOSE: Predicting the phenotypic effects of mutations has become an important application in clinical genetic diagnostics. Computational tools evaluate the behavior of the variant over evolutionary time and assume that variations seen during the course of evolution are probably benign in humans. However, current tools do not take into account orthologous/paralogous relationships. Paralogs have dramatically different roles in Mendelian diseases. For example, whereas inactivating mutations in the NPC1 gene cause the neurodegenerative disorder Niemann-Pick C, inactivating mutations in its paralog NPC1L1 are not disease-causing and, moreover, are implicated in protection from coronary heart disease. METHODS: We identified major events in NPC1 evolution and revealed and compared orthologs and paralogs of the human NPC1 gene through phylogenetic and protein sequence analyses. We predicted whether an amino acid substitution affects protein function by reducing the organism’s fitness. RESULTS: Removing the paralogs and distant homologs improved the overall performance of categorizing disease-causing and benign amino acid substitutions. CONCLUSION: The results show that a thorough evolutionary analysis followed by identification of orthologs improves the accuracy in predicting disease-causing missense mutations. Post-Lie Algebras, Factorization Theorems and Isospectral-Flows
In these notes we review and further explore the Lie enveloping algebra of a
post-Lie algebra. From a Hopf algebra point of view, one of the central
results, which will be recalled in detail, is the existence of a second Hopf
algebra structure. By comparing group-like elements in suitable completions of
these two Hopf algebras, we derive a particular map which we dub post-Lie
Magnus expansion. These results are then considered in the case of
Semenov-Tian-Shansky's double Lie algebra, where a post-Lie algebra is defined
in terms of solutions of modified classical Yang-Baxter equation. In this
context, we prove a factorization theorem for group-like elements. An explicit
exponential solution of the corresponding Lie bracket flow is presented, which

A simple approach to counterterms in N=8 supergravity
We present a simple systematic method to study candidate counterterms in N=8
supergravity. Complicated details of the counterterm operators are avoided
because we work with the on-shell matrix elements they produce. All n-point
matrix elements of an independent SUSY invariant operator of the form D^{2k}
R^n +... must be local and satisfy SUSY Ward identities. These are strong
constraints, and we test directly whether or not matrix elements with these
properties can be constructed. If not, then the operator does not have a
supersymmetrization, and it is excluded as a potential counterterm. For n>4, we
find that R^n, D^2 R^n, D^4 R^n, and D^6 R^n are excluded as counterterms of
MHV amplitudes, while only R^n and D^2 R^n are excluded at the NMHV level. As a
consequence, for loop order L<7, there are no independent D^{2k}R^n
counterterms with n>4. If an operator is not ruled out, our method constructs
an explicit superamplitude for its matrix elements. This is done for the 7-loop
D^4 R^6 operator at the NMHV level and in other cases. We also initiate the
study of counterterms without leading pure-graviton matrix elements, which can
occur beyond the MHV level. The landscape of excluded/allowed candidate

Multimorbidity in bipolar disorder and under-treatment of cardiovascular disease: a cross sectional study
Background: Individuals with serious mental disorders experience poor physical health, especially increased rates of cardiometabolic morbidity and premature morbidity. Recent evidence suggests that individuals with schizophrenia have numerous comorbid physical conditions which may be under-recorded and under-treated but to date very few studies have explored this issue for bipolar disorder.
Methods:We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of a dataset of 1,751,841 registered patients within 314 primary-care practices in Scotland, U.K. Bipolar disorder was identified using Read Codes recorded within electronic medical records. Data on 32 common chronic physical conditions were also assessed. Potential prescribing inequalities were evaluated by analyzing prescribing data for coronary heart disease (CHD) and hypertension.
Results: Compared to controls, individuals with bipolar disorder were significantly less likely to have no recorded physical conditions (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.54-0.63) and significantly more likely to have one physical condition (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.16-1.39), two physical conditions (OR 1.45, 95% CI 1.30-1.62) and three or more physical conditions (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.30-1.64). People with bipolar disorder also had higher rates of thyroid disorders, chronic kidney disease, chronic pain, chronic obstructive airways disease and diabetes but, surprisingly, lower recorded rates of hypertension and atrial fibrillation. People with bipolar disorder and comorbid CHD or hypertension were significantly more likely to be prescribed no antihypertensive or cholesterol-lowering medications compared to controls, and bipolar individuals with CHD or hypertension were significantly less likely to be on 2 or more antihypertensive agents.
Conclusions: Individuals with bipolar disorder are similar to individuals with schizophrenia in having a wide range of comorbid and multiple physical health conditions. They are also less likely than controls to have a primary-care record of cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension and atrial fibrillation. Those with a recorded diagnosis of CHD or hypertension were less likely to be treated with cardiovascular medications and were treated less intensively. This study highlights the high physical healthcare needs of people with bipolar disorder, and provides evidence for a systematic under-recognition and under-treatment of cardiovascular disease in this group
Walks4work: Rationale and study design to investigate walking at lunchtime in the workplace setting
Background: Following recruitment of a private sector company, an 8week lunchtime walking intervention was implemented to examine the effect of the intervention on modifiable cardiovascular disease risk factors, and further to see if walking environment had any further effect on the cardiovascular disease risk factors. Methods. For phase 1 of the study participants were divided into three groups, two lunchtime walking intervention groups to walk around either an urban or natural environment twice a week during their lunch break over an 8week period. The third group was a waiting-list control who would be invited to join the walking groups after phase 1. In phase 2 all participants were encouraged to walk during their lunch break on self-selecting routes. Health checks were completed at baseline, end of phase 1 and end of phase 2 in order to measure the impact of the intervention on cardiovascular disease risk. The primary outcome variables of heart rate and heart rate variability were measured to assess autonomic function associated with cardiovascular disease. Secondary outcome variables (Body mass index, blood pressure, fitness, autonomic response to a stressor) related to cardiovascular disease were also measured. The efficacy of the intervention in increasing physical activity was objectively monitored throughout the 8-weeks using an accelerometer device. Discussion. The results of this study will help in developing interventions with low researcher input with high participant output that may be implemented in the workplace. If effective, this study will highlight the contribution that natural environments can make in the reduction of modifiable cardiovascular disease risk factors within the workplace. © 2012 Brown et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
