Linear connections on matrix geometries
A general definition of a linear connection in noncommutative geometry has
been recently proposed. Two examples are given of linear connections in
noncommutative geometries which are based on matrix algebras. They both possess

Linear Connections in Non-Commutative Geometry
A construction is proposed for linear connections on non-commutative
algebras. The construction relies on a generalisation of the Leibnitz rules of
commutative geometry and uses the bimodule structure of . A special
role is played by the extension to the framework of non-commutative geometry of
the permutation of two copies of . The construction of the linear
connection as well as the definition of torsion and curvature is first proposed
in the setting of the derivations based differential calculus of Dubois-
Violette and then a generalisation to the framework proposed by Connes as well
as other non-commutative differential calculi is suggested. The covariant
derivative obtained admits an extension to the tensor product of several copies
of . These constructions are illustrated with the example of the

Promoting healthy eating and physical activity among school children: findings from Health-E-PALS, the first pilot intervention from Lebanon
Background: In Lebanon, childhood obesity doubled during the past decade. Preventive measures should start early in life and Schools are considered an important environment to promote energy balance health behaviours. School-based programmes promoting healthy lifestyles are lacking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a multicomponent school-based intervention to promote healthy eating and physical activity (and prevent obesity) with school children aged 9–11 years in Lebanon. Methods: The intervention was developed based on the constructs of the Social Cognitive Theory and adapted to the culture of Lebanese and Arab populations. It consisted of three components: class curriculum, family involvement and food service. Eight schools were purposively selected from two communities of different socioeconomic status (SES) in Beirut and, within each school type, were matched on SES, religious sect profile, and then randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. Anthropometric measurements and questionnaires on determinants of behavioural change, eating and physical activity habits were completed by the students in both groups at baseline and post intervention. Focus group interviews were conducted in intervention schools at the end of the study. Challenges encountered during the programme implementation were also identified, since Lebanon is considered a country with political unrest and no similar research projects were conducted in the area. Results: Students in the intervention group reported purchasing and consuming less chips and sweetened drinks post-intervention compared with controls (86% & 88% less respectively p < 0.001). Knowledge and self-efficacy scores increased for the intervention (+2.8 & +1.7 points respectively p < 0.001) but not for the control group. There was no difference in physical activity and screen time habits and no changes in BMI between groups at post intervention. Interview data from focus groups showed that the programme was generally well accepted. Limitations for better outcomes include the length of the programme and the school environment. Conclusion: “Health-E-PALS” intervention is a promising innovative, theory-based, culturally sensitive intervention to promote healthy eating habits and physical activity in Lebanese school children with a potential to be scaled up, replicated and sustained
Noncommutative Geometry of Finite Groups
A finite set can be supplied with a group structure which can then be used to
select (classes of) differential calculi on it via the notions of left-, right-
and bicovariance. A corresponding framework has been developed by Woronowicz,
more generally for Hopf algebras including quantum groups. A differential
calculus is regarded as the most basic structure needed for the introduction of
further geometric notions like linear connections and, moreover, for the
formulation of field theories and dynamics on finite sets. Associated with each
bicovariant first order differential calculus on a finite group is a braid
operator which plays an important role for the construction of distinguished
geometric structures. For a covariant calculus, there are notions of invariance
for linear connections and tensors. All these concepts are explored for finite
groups and illustrated with examples. Some results are formulated more
generally for arbitrary associative (Hopf) algebras. In particular, the problem
of extension of a connection on a bimodule (over an associative algebra) to
tensor products is investigated, leading to the class of `extensible
connections'. It is shown that invariance properties of an extensible
connection on a bimodule over a Hopf algebra are carried over to the extension.
Furthermore, an invariance property of a connection is also shared by a `dual

Three routes to the exact asymptotics for the one-dimensional quantum walk
We demonstrate an alternative method for calculating the asymptotic behaviour
of the discrete one-coin quantum walk on the infinite line, via the Jacobi
polynomials that arise in the path integral representation. This is
significantly easier to use than the Darboux method. It also provides a single
integral representation for the wavefunction that works over the full range of
positions, including throughout the transitional range where the behaviour
changes from oscillatory to exponential. Previous analyses of this system have
run into difficulties in the transitional range, because the approximations on
which they were based break down here. The fact that there are two different
kinds of approach to this problem (Path Integral vs. Schr\"{o}dinger wave
mechanics) is ultimately a manifestation of the equivalence between the
path-integral formulation of quantum mechanics and the original formulation
developed in the 1920s. We discuss how and why our approach is related to the

Short-term morphological changes in asymptomatic perimandibular muscles after dry needling assessed with rehabilitative ultrasound imaging: A proof-of-concept study
Facial anatomical structures are not easily accessible to manual palpation. The aim of our study is to objectively assess temporomandibular joint and perimandibular muscles dimensions by means of sonographic measurements before and after dry needling (DN) in asymptomatic subjects. Seventeen subjects participated in this before-after study with a within-subject control. After random allocation, one side of the face was used for the intervention and the contralateral as control. DN was performed on the temporal, masseter, and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Each subject was examined bilaterally before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention through Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI) of the temporomandibular articular disc and the three target muscles. Maximum mouth opening was measured at baseline and at one month. After a single DN session, articular disc thickness significantly decreased; muscles' thicknesses (except for temporal thickness) significantly decreased immediately and at follow-up on the treated side; no significant changes resulted for the control side. The maximum mouth opening increased from 4.77 mm to 4.86 mm. RUSI may be useful to assess the dimensions and thickness of the temporomandibular disc and muscles before and after an intervention. DN influences muscle morphology, and it has a positive influence on mouth opening in the short term
Anticoagulant rodenticides on our public and community lands: spatial distribution of exposure and poisoning of a rare forest carnivore.
Anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) poisoning has emerged as a significant concern for conservation and management of non-target wildlife. The purpose for these toxicants is to suppress pest populations in agricultural or urban settings. The potential of direct and indirect exposures and illicit use of ARs on public and community forest lands have recently raised concern for fishers (Martes pennanti), a candidate for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act in the Pacific states. In an investigation of threats to fisher population persistence in the two isolated California populations, we investigate the magnitude of this previously undocumented threat to fishers, we tested 58 carcasses for the presence and quantification of ARs, conducted spatial analysis of exposed fishers in an effort to identify potential point sources of AR, and identified fishers that died directly due to AR poisoning. We found 46 of 58 (79%) fishers exposed to an AR with 96% of those individuals having been exposed to one or more second-generation AR compounds. No spatial clustering of AR exposure was detected and the spatial distribution of exposure suggests that AR contamination is widespread within the fisher's range in California, which encompasses mostly public forest and park lands Additionally, we diagnosed four fisher deaths, including a lactating female, that were directly attributed to AR toxicosis and documented the first neonatal or milk transfer of an AR to an altricial fisher kit. These ARs, which some are acutely toxic, pose both a direct mortality or fitness risk to fishers, and a significant indirect risk to these isolated populations. Future research should be directed towards investigating risks to prey populations fishers are dependent on, exposure in other rare forest carnivores, and potential AR point sources such as illegal marijuana cultivation in the range of fishers on California public lands

A Note on B-observables in Ponzano-Regge 3d Quantum Gravity
