A Nightmare on Elm Street : una pesadilla cultural de la que era difícil escapar

    Get PDF
The aim of this article is to analyze A Nightmare on Elm Street from a Cultural Studies perspective, understanding it as a historical source which offers a deeper knowledge of the eighties. In the United States, those years were marked by a conservative discourse that permeated many products of the popular culture, such as horror movies. Nonetheless, A Nightmare is different from these other movies. The boundaries between fantasy and reality boundaries were blurred to create confusion in order to make it impossible to differentiate between the two worlds. Indeed, this was the same thing that happened in the real world with the serial killer, who was simplified, turned into an evil being without any human traits. Likewise, the protagonist Freddy Krueger displays several attributes that turn him in a frightening monster, a representation directly influenced by the historical tensions and events in the country at that time

The purpose of this article is to analyze Wim Wenders’ film “Wings of Desire”, taking as background discourses the sovereign subject critique carried out by deconstruction and based on concepts as desire or the considerations developed by Walter Benjamin around narration. All of that, without forgetting the contributions of contemporary film theory. The above-mentioned analysis finds out in the film an autopoetics of his maker, as well as a certain way of understanding historical memory and the bet on the possibility of a relationship in which one of the subjects doesn’t expect to appropriate or dissolve the other

Transdisciplinary Design: Tamed complexity through new collaboration

    Get PDF
The following essay aims to expose the characteristics of Transdisciplinary Design and its relationship with design thinking, applying both as complex problem-solving strategies. In order to achieve this, we must briefly explore the characteristics of design thinking and non-uni-disciplinary strategies and subsequently describe the reasons why design can be considered as a privileged platform for problem-solving strategies for the more complex problematics of our contemporary society; ranging from transdisciplinary design as well as the differences with regard to design thinking model. Keywords: transdisciplinarity, design, complexity, design thinking, non-disciplinary approaches

Does absorptive capacity determine collaborative research returns to innovation? A geographical dimension

    Get PDF
This paper aims to estimate the impact of research collaboration with partners in different geographical areas on innovative performance. By using the Spanish Technological Innovation Panel, this study provides evidence that the benefits of research collaboration differ across different dimensions of the geography. We find that the impact of extra-European cooperation on innovation performance is larger than that of national and European cooperation, indicating that firms tend to benefit more from interaction with international partners as a way to access new technologies or specialized and novel knowledge that they are unable to find locally. We also find evidence of the positive role played by absorptive capacity, concluding that it implies a higher premium on the innovation returns to cooperation in the international case and mainly in the European one

Are Collaborative Agreements in Innovation Activities Persistent at the Firm Level? Empirical Evidence for the Spanish Case

    Get PDF
We provide evidence on the dynamics in firms' cooperation behaviour in innovation activities. Our main objective is to analyse if collaborative agreements are persistent at the firm level; and, in such a case, to study what are the main drivers of this phenomenon. We also study to what extent such persistence is different from persistence in R&D, so that the former exists on top of the latter. Finally, we deal with the differentiated persistence pattern of collaboration agreements for different types of partners, as well as the possibility of finding persistence across them. We follow a dynamic approach in the analysis of cooperation persistence: We take into account the unobserved individual heterogeneity and address the initial conditions problem. We use a representative sample of Spanish firms for the period 2002-2010

What Drives the Choice of Partners in R&D Cooperation? Heterogeneity across Sectors

In this paper we analyse the heterogeneity in firms’ decisions to engage in R&D cooperation, taking into account the type of partner (other companies from the same group, suppliers or customers, competitors, and research institutions) and the sector to which the firm belongs (industrial or services). We use information from the Technological Innovation Panel (PITEC) for the years 2006-2008 and estimate multivariate probit models corrected for endogeneity. We find that the determinants of R&D cooperation differ between sectors. In the industrial sector, the perception of risk as an obstacle to innovation reduces the likelihood of cooperating with companies in the same group and competitors, while in the service sector it reduces cooperation with suppliers or customers. For its part, the possibility of accessing additional human resources has a significantly positive effect on cooperation with all types of partner in the service sector, but not for manufactures

    Technological cooperation in Spanish firms

This paper aims to study to what extent participating in technological cooperation agreements can be a useful mechanism for improving the innovative capacity of Spanish firms, specially in the context of the economic recession. We analyse if there are differences in the returns obtained from cooperation alliances according to the firm’s size as well as different geographical scopes of such alliances. In addition, we want to study to what extent innovation cooperation may have a different effect on incremental innovations than on radical/breakthrough innovations. We use the Spanish Technological Innovation Panel from 2004 to 2012 to provide evidence on the above issues
