Polarization control of single photon quantum orbital angular momentum states
The orbital angular momentum of photons, being defined in an infinitely
dimensional discrete Hilbert space, offers a promising resource for
high-dimensional quantum information protocols in quantum optics. The biggest
obstacle to its wider use is presently represented by the limited set of tools
available for its control and manipulation. Here, we introduce and test
experimentally a series of simple optical schemes for the coherent transfer of
quantum information from the polarization to the orbital angular momentum of
single photons and vice versa. All our schemes exploit a newly developed
optical device, the so-called "q-plate", which enables the manipulation of the
photon orbital angular momentum driven by the polarization degree of freedom.
By stacking several q-plates in a suitable sequence, one can also access to
higher-order angular momentum subspaces. In particular, we demonstrate the
control of the orbital angular momentum degree of freedom within the
subspaces of and per photon. Our experiments prove
that these schemes are reliable, efficient and have a high fidelity.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
On the formal foundations of cash management systems
[EN] Cash management aims to find a balance between what is held in cash and what is allocated in other investments in exchange for a given return. Dealing with cash management systems with multiple accounts and different links between them is a complex task. Current cash management models provide analytic solutions without exploring the underlying structure of accounts and its main properties. There is a need for a formal definition of cash management systems. In this work, we introduce a formal approach to manage cash with multiple accounts based on graph theory. Our approach allows a formal reasoning on the relation between accounts in cash management systems. A critical part of this formal reasoning is the characterization of desirable and non-desirable cash management policies. Novel theoretical results guide cash managers in the analysis of complex cash management systems. This work is partially funded by projects Logistar (H2020-769142), AI4EU (H2020-825619) and 2017 SGR 172.Salas-Molina, F.; Rodriguez-Aguilar, JA.; Pla Santamaría, D.; Garcia-Bernabeu, A. Comparison of the material quality of AlxIn1-xN (x ~ 0-0.50) films deposited on Si (100) and (111) by reactive RF sputtering
Here, we compare the material quality of AlxIn1-xN layers deposited on Si
with different crystallographic orientations, (100) and (111), via
radio-frequency (RF) sputtering. To modulate their Al content, the Al RF power
was varied from 0 to 225 W, whereas the In RF power and deposition temperature
were fixed at 30 W and 300oC, respectively. X-ray diffraction measurements
reveal a c-axis-oriented wurtzite structure with no phase separation regardless
of the Al content (x = 0-0.50), which increases with the Al power supply. The
surface morphology of the AlxIn1-xN layers improves with increasing Al content
and it is similar for samples grown on both Si substrates (the root-mean-square
roughness decreases from 12 nm to 2.5 nm). Furthermore, from TEM images we
notice a similar grain-like columnar morphology and defect density on samples
deposited on both Si substrates under the same conditions. Simultaneously grown
AlxIn1-xN-on-sapphire samples point to a residual n-type carrier concentration
in the 1020-1021 cm-3 range. The optical band gap energy of these layers
evolves from 1.75 eV to 2.56 eV with increasing Al content, consistent with the
blue shift of their low-temperature photoluminescence. In general, the material
quality of the AlxIn1-xN films on Si is similar for both crystallographic
orientations. Nonetheless, samples deposited on sapphire show an improved
structural and morphological characteristic likely due to the lower difference
in lattice constants between the nitride and the sapphire substrate
Differential Role of Human Choline Kinase α and β Enzymes in Lipid Metabolism: Implications in Cancer Onset and Treatment
11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table.Background
The Kennedy pathway generates phosphocoline and phosphoethanolamine through its two branches. Choline Kinase (ChoK) is the first enzyme of the Kennedy branch of synthesis of 1phosphocholine, the major component of the plasma membrane. ChoK family of proteins is composed by ChoKα and ChoKβ isoforms, the first one with two different variants of splicing. Recently ChoKα has been implicated in the carcinogenic process, since it is over-expressed in a variety of human cancers. However, no evidence for a role of ChoKβ in carcinogenesis has been reported.
Methodology/Principal Findings
Here we compare the in vitro and in vivo properties of ChoKα1 and ChoKβ in lipid metabolism, and their potential role in carcinogenesis. Both ChoKα1 and ChoKβ showed choline and ethanolamine kinase activities when assayed in cell extracts, though with different affinity for their substrates. However, they behave differentially when overexpressed in whole cells. Whereas ChoKβ display an ethanolamine kinase role, ChoKα1 present a dual choline/ethanolamine kinase role, suggesting the involvement of each ChoK isoform in distinct biochemical pathways under in vivo conditions. In addition, while overexpression of ChoKα1 is oncogenic when overexpressed in HEK293T or MDCK cells, ChoKβ overexpression is not sufficient to induce in vitro cell transformation nor in vivo tumor growth. Furthermore, a significant upregulation of ChoKα1 mRNA levels in a panel of breast and lung cancer cell lines was found, but no changes in ChoKβ mRNA levels were observed. Finally, MN58b, a previously described potent inhibitor of ChoK with in vivo antitumoral activity, shows more than 20-fold higher efficiency towards ChoKα1 than ChoKβ.
Conclusion/Significance
This study represents the first evidence of the distinct metabolic role of ChoKα and ChoKβ isoforms, suggesting different physiological roles and implications in human carcinogenesis. These findings constitute a step forward in the design of an antitumoral strategy based on ChoK inhibition. This work has been supported by grants to JCL from Comunidad de Madrid (GR-SAL-0821-2004), Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (SAF2008-03750, RD06/0020/0016), Fundación Mutua Madrileña, and by a grant to ARM from Fundación Mutua Madrileña.Peer reviewe
Influence of the AlN interlayer thickness on the photovoltaic properties of In-rich AlInN on Si heterojunctions deposited by RF sputtering
We report the influence of the AlN interlayer thickness (0-15 nm) on the
photovoltaic properties of Al0.37In0.63N on Si heterojunction solar cells
deposited by radio frequency sputtering. The poor junction band alignment and
the presence of a 2-3 nm thick amorphous layer at the interface mitigates the
response in devices fabricated by direct deposition of n-AlInN on p-Si(111).
Adding a 4-nm-thick AlN buffer layer improves the AlInN crystalline quality and
the interface alignment leading to devices with a conversion efficiency of 1.5%
under 1-sun AM1.5G illumination. For thicker buffers the performance lessens
due to inefficient tunnel transport through the AlN. These results demonstrate
the feasibility of using In-rich AlInN alloys deposited by radio frequency
sputtering as novel electron-selective contacts to Si-heterojunction solar
cells
Evolution of the concept of treatment-resistant schizophrenia: Toward a reformulation for lack of an adequate response.
The concept of “resistant schizophrenia” is linked to the development of antipsychotic drugs. Although
there were previous attempts, the first definition acknowledged in the scientific literature, was closely
linked to the development of clozapine in dichotomic terms of response/no response to previous drug.
This article reviews the influence of the psychopharmacologic treatment of schizophrenia on the
evolving definition of treatment-resistance. It also addresses other concepts of interest, such as remission
and recovery, as well as definitions of schizophrenia in which deterioration is an integral part of the
psychopathology, thereby implicitly ruling out the possibility of a complete remission of symptoms.
Instead of treatment-resistance, we are suggesting the term “lack of adequate response,” which is closer to
operational dimensional models that integrate the idea of a continuum with response levels related to an
individual’s life expectations, and which allow different pharmacological approaches to be integrated
Search for low-mass WIMPs in a 0.6 kg day exposure of the DAMIC experiment at SNOLAB
We present results of a dark matter search performed with a 0.6 kg day
exposure of the DAMIC experiment at the SNOLAB underground laboratory. We
measure the energy spectrum of ionization events in the bulk silicon of
charge-coupled devices down to a signal of 60 eV electron equivalent. The data
are consistent with radiogenic backgrounds, and constraints on the
spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross section are accordingly
placed. A region of parameter space relevant to the potential signal from the
CDMS-II Si experiment is excluded using the same target for the first time.
This result obtained with a limited exposure demonstrates the potential to
explore the low-mass WIMP region (<10 GeV/) of the upcoming DAMIC100, a
100 g detector currently being installed in SNOLAB.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
