Finslerian 3-spinors and the generalized Duffin-Kemmer equation
The main facts of the geometry of Finslerian 3-spinors are formulated. The
close connection between Finslerian 3-spinors and vectors of the 9-dimensional
linear Finslerian space is established. The isometry group of this space is
described. The procedure of dimensional reduction to 4-dimensional quantities
is formulated. The generalized Duffin-Kemmer equation for a Finslerian 3-spinor
wave function of a free particle in the momentum representation is obtained.
From the viewpoint of a 4-dimensional observer, this 9-dimensional equation

Lulo cell line derived from Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) : A novel model to assay Leishmania spp. and vector interaction
Background: Leishmania (Vianna) braziliensis, Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis and Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi are important parasites in the scenario of leishmaniasis in Brazil. During the life cycle of these parasites, the promastigote forms adhere to the midgut epithelial microvillii of phlebotomine insects to avoid being secreted along with digestive products. Lulo cells are a potential model that will help to understand the features of this adhesion phenomenon. Here, we analyze the interaction between Leishmania spp. promastigotes and Lulo cells in vitro, specifically focusing on adhesion events occurring between three Leishmania species and this cell line. Methods. Confluent monolayers of Lulo cells were incubated with promastigotes and adhesion was assessed using both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Findings. The results indicate that species from the subgenera Leishmania and Viannia have great potential to adhere to Lulo cells. The highest adherence rate was observed for L. (L.) chagasi after 24 h of incubation with Lulo cells (27.3 1.8% of cells with adhered promastigotes), followed by L. (L.) amazonensis (16.0 0.7%) and L. (V.) braziliensis (3.0 0.7%), both after 48 h. In the ultrastructural analysis, promastigote adherence was also assessed by scanning electron microscopy, showing that, for parasites from both subgenera, adhesion occurs by both the body and the flagellum. The interaction of Lulo cells with Leishmania (L.) chagasi showed the participation of cytoplasmic projections from the former closely associating the parasites with the cells. Conclusions: We present evidence that Lulo cells can be useful in studies of insect-parasite interactions for Leishmania species. © 2011 Côrtes et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
Assessment of the Physicochemical Properties of Chrysotile-Containing Brake Debris Pertaining to Toxicity
Grinding and drilling of chrysotile asbestos-containing brake pads during the 20thcentury led torelease of chrysotile, resulting in varying levels of workplace exposures of mechanics. Despite expo-sures, excess risk of mesothelioma remains in doubt.Objectives:The toxicity of particulates is primarily derived through a combination of physicochemicalproperties and dose and as such this study aimed to determine properties of asbestos-containingbrake debris (BD) which may influence pathogenicity and potential of mesothelioma.Materials and Methods:Chrysotile-containing brake pads were ground–to reflect occupational activ-ities, aerosolized, and size-fractionated to isolate respirable fractions. Analysis of morphology, biodur-ability, surface charge, and interactions with macrophages were undertaken.Results:The respirable fraction of BD contained15–17% free chrysotile fibers thereby constituting asmall but relevant potential long fiber dose. Acellular biodurability studies showed rapid dissolutionand fragmentation of chrysotile fibers that was consistent for pure chrysotile control and BD samples.Conclusions:The long, free, respirable chrysotile fibers were present in BD, yet were of low bio-dur-ability; incubation in artificial lysosomal fluid led to destruction of free fibers
Visualising mouse neuroanatomy and function by metal distribution using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry imaging
© The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015. Metals have a number of important roles within the brain. We used laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to map the three-dimensional concentrations and distributions of transition metals, in particular iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) within the murine brain. LA-ICP-MS is one of the leading analytical tools for measuring metals in tissue samples. Here, we present a complete data reduction protocol for measuring metals in biological samples, including the application of a pyramidal voxel registration technique to reproducibly align tissue sections. We used gold (Au) nanoparticle and ytterbium (Yb)-tagged tyrosine hydroxylase antibodies to assess the co-localisation of Fe and dopamine throughout the entire mouse brain. We also examined the natural clustering of metal concentrations within the murine brain to elucidate areas of similar composition. This clustering technique uses a mathematical approach to identify multiple 'elemental clusters', avoiding user bias and showing that metal composition follows a hierarchical organisation of neuroanatomical structures. This work provides new insight into the distinct compartmentalisation of metals in the brain, and presents new avenues of exploration with regard to region-specific, metal-associated neurodegeneration observed in several chronic neurodegenerative diseases
Asymptotic Energy Dependence of Hadronic Total Cross Sections from Lattice QCD
The nonperturbative approach to soft high-energy hadron-hadron scattering,
based on the analytic continuation of Wilson-loop correlation functions from
Euclidean to Minkowskian theory, allows to investigate the asymptotic energy
dependence of hadron-hadron total cross sections in lattice QCD. In this paper
we will show, using best fits of the lattice data with proper functional forms
satisfying unitarity and other physical constraints, how indications emerge in
favor of a universal asymptotic high-energy behavior of the kind B log^2 s for

Effects of sex, age, and visits on receipt of preventive healthcare services: a secondary analysis of national data
BACKGROUND: Sex and age may exert a combined influence on receipt of preventive services with differences due to number of ambulatory care visits. METHODS: We used nationally representative data to determine weighted percentages and adjusted odds ratios of men and women stratified by age group who received selected preventive services. The presence of interaction between sex and age group was tested using adjusted models and retested after adding number of visits. RESULTS: Men were less likely than women to have received blood pressure screening (aOR 0.44;0.40–0.50), cholesterol screening (aOR 0.72;0.65–0.79), tobacco cessation counseling (aOR 0.66;0.55–0.78), and checkups (aOR 0.53;0.49–0.57). In younger age groups, men were particularly less likely than women to have received these services. In adjusted models, this observed interaction between sex and age group persisted only for blood pressure measurement (p = .016) and routine checkups (p < .001). When adjusting for number of visits, the interaction of age on receipt of blood pressure checks was mitigated but men were still overall less likely to receive the service. CONCLUSION: Men are significantly less likely than women to receive certain preventive services, and younger men even more so. Some of this discrepancy is secondary to a difference in number of ambulatory care visits
Linking PIAAC Data to Individual Administrative Data: Insights from a German Pilot Project
Linking survey data to administrative data offers researchers many opportunities. In particular, it enables them to enrich survey data with additional information without increasing the burden on respondents. German PIAAC data on individual skills, for example, can be combined with administrative data on individual employment histories. However, as the linkage of survey data with administrative data records requires the consent of respondents, there may be bias in the linked dataset if only a subsample of respondents - for example, high-educated individuals - give their consent. The present chapter provides an overview of the pilot project about linking the German PIAAC data with individual administrative data. In a first step, we illustrate characteristics of the linkable datasets and describe the linkage process and its methodological challenges. In a second step, we provide an illustrative example of the use of the linked data and investigate how the skills assessed in PIAAC are associated with the linkage decision
Spatial analysis of air pollution and childhood asthma in Hamilton, Canada: comparing exposure methods in sensitive subgroups
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Variations in air pollution exposure within a community may be associated with asthma prevalence. However, studies conducted to date have produced inconsistent results, possibly due to errors in measurement of the exposures.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A standardized asthma survey was administered to children in grades one and eight in Hamilton, Canada, in 1994–95 (N ~1467). Exposure to air pollution was estimated in four ways: (1) distance from roadways; (2) interpolated surfaces for ozone, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter and nitrous oxides from seven to nine governmental monitoring stations; (3) a kriged nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) surface based on a network of 100 passive NO<sub>2 </sub>monitors; and (4) a land use regression (LUR) model derived from the same monitoring network. Logistic regressions were used to test associations between asthma and air pollution, controlling for variables including neighbourhood income, dwelling value, state of housing, a deprivation index and smoking.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no significant associations between any of the exposure estimates and asthma in the whole population, but large effects were detected the subgroup of children without hayfever (predominately in girls). The most robust effects were observed for the association of asthma without hayfever and NO<sub>2</sub>LUR OR = 1.86 (95%CI, 1.59–2.16) in all girls and OR = 2.98 (95%CI, 0.98–9.06) for older girls, over an interquartile range increase and controlling for confounders.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings indicate that traffic-related pollutants, such as NO<sub>2</sub>, are associated with asthma without overt evidence of other atopic disorders among female children living in a medium-sized Canadian city. The effects were sensitive to the method of exposure estimation. More refined exposure models produced the most robust associations.</p
Analysis of the Promoter of Emb5 from Zea mays Identifies a Region of 523 bp Responsible for Its Embryo-Specific Activity
The maize Emb5 is an abscisic acid–responsive gene which is specifically expressed in the late embryo during seed maturity. To further dissect and identify the elements specific for its embryo expression pattern, we investigated the activity of the − 1653 bp upstream of the “full-length” promoter region of this gene in transgenic Arabidopsis plants. We first confirmed that the “full-length” promoter could indeed drive the expression of β-glucuronidase reporter gene (GUS) in the transgenic Arabidopsis seed embryo. Subsequently, DNA fragments of ~ 500 bp in length were generated after a series of progressive deletions from positions − 1653 bp to − 1 bp relative to the transcriptional initiation site. These fragments were fused with GUS and introduced into Arabidopsis. Measurement of the GUS activity in the immature seeds isolated from the transgenic plants revealed that the region between positions − 523 bp and − 1 bp, namely ProEm-D, is absolutely required and sufficient for the temporal and embryo-specific expression of GUS with an activity comparable with the full-length Emb5 promoter in Arabidopsis. Therefore, our results clearly demonstrated that the 523 bp ProEm-D can replace the − 1653 bp Emb5 promoter to drive embryo-specific expression in Arabidopsis seed. Because of its small size and strong embryo-specific activity, it could become the promoter of choice in metabolic pathway engineering to transfer multiple genes for the production of valuable pharmaceutical products in seeds, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids found in fish oils, or pro-vitamin A where at least three transgenes are required to assemble the entire metabolic pathways
