    Transport properties in antiferromagnetic quantum Griffiths phases

    We study the electrical resistivity in the quantum Griffiths phase associated with the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition in a metal. The resistivity is calculated by means of the semi-classical Boltzmann equation. We show that the scattering of electrons by locally ordered rare regions leads to a singular temperature dependence. The rare-region contribution to the resistivity varies as TλT^\lambda with temperature T,T, where the λ\lambda is the usual Griffiths exponent which takes the value zero at the critical point and increases with distance from criticality. We find similar singular contributions to other transport properties such as thermal resistivity, thermopower and the Peltier coefficient. We also compare our results with existing experimental data and suggest new experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    A long-range and long-life telemetry data-acquisition system for heart rate and multiple body temperatures from free-ranging animals

    The system includes an implantable transmitter, external receiver-retransmitter collar, and a microprocessor-controlled demodulator. The size of the implant is suitable for animals with body weights of a few kilograms or more; further size reduction of the implant is possible. The ECG is sensed by electrodes designed for internal telemetry and to reduce movement artifacts. The R-wave characteristics are then specifically selected to trigger a short radio frequency pulse. Temperatures are sensed at desired locations by thermistors and then, based on a heartbeat counter, transmitted intermittently via pulse interval modulation. This modulation scheme includes first and last calibration intervals for a reference by ratios with the temperature intervals to achieve good accuracy even over long periods. Pulse duration and pulse sequencing are used to discriminate between heart rate and temperature pulses as well as RF interference

    Lexicographic choice functions without archimedeanicity

    We investigate the connection between choice functions and lexicographic probabilities, by means of the convexity axiom considered by Seidenfeld, Schervisch and Kadane (2010) but without imposing any Archimedean condition. We show that lexicographic probabilities are related to a particular type of sets of desirable gambles, and investigate the properties of the coherent choice function this induces via maximality. Finally, we show that the convexity axiom is necessary but not sufficient for a coherent choice function to be the infimum of a class of lexicographic ones

    Phase Measurement of Resonant Two-Photon Ionization in Helium

    We study resonant two-color two-photon ionization of Helium via the 1s3p 1P1 state. The first color is the 15th harmonic of a tunable titanium sapphire laser, while the second color is the fundamental laser radiation. Our method uses phase-locked high-order harmonics to determine the {\it phase} of the two-photon process by interferometry. The measurement of the two-photon ionization phase variation as a function of detuning from the resonance and intensity of the dressing field allows us to determine the intensity dependence of the transition energy.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, under consideratio

    The Effect of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA): Ten Years Later

    This paper examines the economic impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on international trade among the three member countries – Canada, Mexico and the United States, in the past ten years. Through regression techniques, estimated volume and the predicted trend for exports among the countries are compared with the actual observations. The empirical results indicate that NAFTA did achieve the desired goal of increasing trade among their member countries.  The actual trade volume is greater than what the estimated trade volume would have been without NAFTA.  Although all the member countries have seen their exports increased, the volumes vary among the three, with Mexico being the largest beneficiary

    The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the foreign direct investment (FDI) in China. China has become an increasingly important hosting economy for FDI and this trend is expected to continue with the country’s entry to the World Trade organization.  In this paper, we will review the current literature related to FDI, and use secondary data to employ regression to estimate the trend line of FDI in China. This is followed by factor analysis to examine the variables and factors influencing the FDI in China. We will then perform clustering analysis to look at the regional distribution of FDI in China and finally draw conclusions.&nbsp

    Potential Applications of Active Antenna Technologies for Emerging NASA Space Communications Scenarios

    AbstractThe National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is presently embarking on the implementation of far-reaching changes within the framework of both space and aeronautics communications architectures. For example, near earth relays are looking to transition from the traditional few large geostationary satellites to satellite constellations consisting of thousands of small low earth orbiting satellites while lunar space communications will require the need to relay data from many assets distributed on the lunar surface back to earth. Furthermore, within the aeronautics realm, satellite communications for beyond line of sight (BLOS) links are being investigated in tandem with the proliferation of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) within the urban air mobility (UAM) environment. In all of these scenarios, future communications architectures will demand the need to connect and quickly transition between many nodes for large data volume transport. As such, NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) has been heavily investigating the development of low cost phased array technologies that can readily address these various scenario conditions. In particular, GRC is presently exploring 5G-based beamformer technologies to leverage commercial timescale and volume production cycles which have heretofore not existed within the frequency allocations utilized for NASA applications. In this paper, an overview of the potential future applications of phased arrays being envisioned by NASA are discussed, along with technology feasibility demonstrations being conducted by GRC implementing low cost, 5G based beamformer technologies
