    Youth–adult partnership: exploring contributions to empowerment, agency and community connections in Malaysian youth programs

    Youth–adult partnership (Y–AP) has emerged as a key practice for enacting two features of effective developmental settings: supportive adult relationships and support for efficacy and mattering. Previous studies have shown that when youth, supported by adults, actively participate in organizational and community decision-making they are likely to show greater confidence and agency, empowerment and critical consciousness, and community connections. Most of the extant research on Y–AP is limited to qualitative studies and the identification of organizational best practices. Almost all research focuses on Western sociocultural settings. To address these gaps, 299 youth, age 15 to 24, were sampled from established afterschool and community programs in Malaysia to explore the contribution of Y–AP (operationalized as having two components: youth voice in decision-making and supportive adult relationships) to empowerment, agency and community connections. As hypothesized, hierarchical regressions indicated that program quality (Y–AP, safe environment and program engagement) contributed to agency, empowerment and community connections beyond the contribution of family, school and religion. Additionally, the Y–AP measures contributed substantially more variance than the other measures of program quality on each outcome. Interaction effects indicated differences by age for empowerment and agency but not for community connections. The primary findings in this inquiry replicate those found in previous interview and observational-oriented studies. The data suggests fertile ground for future research while demonstrating that Y–AP may be an effective practice for positive youth development outside of Western settings

    On arrival to a new country, migrants usually face language barriers, cultural barriers, discrimination, and other sources of unjust contextual conditions that lower their chances of a successful life (Handy and Greenspan, Nonprofit Volunt Sect Q 38:956–982, 2009). This scenario compromises their levels of well-being and supports a tendency toward social fragmentation in places of settlement (Garcia-Ramirez et al., Am J Community Psychol 47(1–2), 86–97, 2011). In response to this situation, migrants' engagement in civic life has been identified as an important element for developing both individual well-being and cohesive communities (Gilster, J Community Psychol 40(7), 769–784, 2012) (Stoll and Wong, Int Migr Rev 41(4), 880–908, 2007). Using a qualitative study, the present work explores the effects of activism on youth of sub-Saharan African origin, of the first and second generations, who are active in national and ethnic associations. The work aims to explore (1) through narratives the meaning that integration has for young migrants; (2) how integrated they feel; and (3) the role of the association, both national and ethnic, in the perception of integration of these young people

    EDHF function in the ductus arteriosus: evidence against involvement of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids and 12S-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid

    We have previously shown (Ref. 2) that endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF) becomes functional in the fetal ductus arteriosus on removal of nitric oxide and carbon monoxide. From this, it was proposed that EDHF originates from a cytochrome P-450 (CYP450)-catalyzed reaction being inhibited by the two agents. Here, we have examined in the mouse ductus whether EDHF can be identified as an arachidonic acid product of a CYP450 epoxygenase and allied pathways. We did not detect transcripts of the mouse CYP2C subfamily in vessel, while CYP2J subfamily transcripts were expressed with CYP2J6 and CYP2J9. These CYP2J hemoproteins were also detected in the ductus by immunofluorescence microscopy, being colocalized with the endoplasmic reticulum in both endothelial and muscle cells. Distinct CYP450 transcripts were also detected and were responsible for ω-hydroxylation (CYP4A31) and 12R-hydroxylation (CYP4B1). Mass spectrometric analysis showed formation of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) in the intact ductus, with 11,12- and 14,15-EETs being more prominent than 5,6- and 8,9-EETs. However, their yield did not increase with nitric oxide/carbon monoxide suppression, nor did it abate with endothelium removal. No evidence was obtained for formation of 12R-hydroxyeicosatrienoic acid and ω-hydroxylation products. 2S-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid was instead detected, and, contrary to data implicating this compound as an alternative EDHF, its suppression with baicalein did not modify the EDHF-mediated relaxation to bradykinin. We conclude that none of the more common CYP450-linked arachidonic acid metabolites appears to qualify as EDHF in mouse ductus. We speculate that some novel eicosanoid or a totally unrelated compound requiring CYP450 for its synthesis accounts for EDHF in this vessel
