Convective injection and photochemical decay of peroxides in the tropical upper troposphere: Methyl iodide as a tracer of marine convection
The convective injection and subsequent fate of the peroxides H2O2 and CH3OOH in the upper troposphere is investigated using aircraft observations from the NASA Pacific Exploratory Mission-Tropics A (PEM-Tropics A) over the South Pacific up to 12 km altitude. Fresh convective outflow is identified by high CH3I concentrations; CH3I is an excellent tracer of marine convection because of its relatively uniform marine boundary layer concentration, relatively well-defined atmospheric lifetime against photolysis, and high sensitivity of measurement. We find that mixing ratios of CH3OOH in convective outflow at 8-12 km altitude are enhanced on average by a factor of 6 relative to background, while mixing ratios of H2O2 are enhanced by less than a factor of 2. The scavenging efficiency of H2O2 in the precipitation associated with deep convection is estimated to be 55-70%. Scavenging of CH3OOH is negligible. Photolysis of convected peroxides is a major source of the HOx radical family (OH + peroxy radicals) in convective outflow. The timescale for decay of the convective enhancement of peroxides in the upper troposphere is determined using CH3I as a chemical clock and is interpreted using photochemical model calculations. Decline of CH3OOH takes place on a timescale of a 1-2 days, but the resulting HOx converts to H2O2, so H2O2 mixing ratios show no decline for ∼5 days following a convective event. The perturbation to HOx at 8-12 km altitude from deep convective injection of peroxides decays on a timescale of 2-3 days for the PEM-Tropics A conditions. Modern theory on the dynamics of infectious diseases is infl uenced by ecological theory, especially by demography. Th e study of these dynamics using mathematical models has had a staggering development in recent years, and has proven to be a valuable tool to understand epidemiological patterns and processes, provided that models are as close as possible to real life situations and based on biological knowledge. We discuss the basic concepts of the transmission dynamics of infectious agents aff ecting a host and an insect vector. We specifi cally study mathematical models for the dynamics of human malaria in both spatially homogeneous and fragmented environments. Models for the dynamics of human onchocerciasis are also presented. Finally we discuss the results and their basic and applied importance
Roles of connexins and pannexins in (neuro)endocrine physiology.
International audienceTo ensure appropriate secretion in response to organismal demand, (neuro)endocrine tissues liberate massive quantities of hormone, which act to coordinate and synchronize biological signals in distant secretory and non-secretory cell populations. Intercellular communication plays a central role in this control. With regard to molecular identity, junctional cell-cell communication is supported by connexin (Cx)-based gap junctions. In addition, connexin hemichannels, the structural precursors of gap junctions, as well as pannexin (Panx) channels have recently emerged as possible modulators of the secretory process. This review focuses on the expression of connexins and pannexins in various (neuro)endocrine tissues, including the adrenal cortex and medulla, the anterior pituitary, the endocrine hypothalamus and the pineal, thyroid and parathyroid glands. In response to a physiological or pathological situation, junctional intercellular coupling can be acutely modulated or persistently remodelled, thus offering multiple regulatory possibilities. The functional role(s) of gap junction-mediated intercellular communication in endocrine physiology, as well as the involvement of connexin/pannexin-related hemichannels are also discussed
Photodissociation and the Morphology of HI in Galaxies
Young massive stars produce Far-UV photons which dissociate the molecular gas
on the surfaces of their parent molecular clouds. Of the many dissociation
products which result from this ``back-reaction'', atomic hydrogen \HI is one
of the easiest to observe through its radio 21-cm hyperfine line emission. In
this paper I first review the physics of this process and describe a simplified
model which has been developed to permit an approximate computation of the
column density of photodissociated \HI which appears on the surfaces of
molecular clouds. I then review several features of the \HI morphology of
galaxies on a variety of length scales and describe how photodissociation might
account for some of these observations. Finally, I discuss several consequences
which follow if this view of the origin of HI in galaxies continues to be

Josephson effects in MgB2 meta masked ion damage junctions
Ion beam damage combined with nanoscale focused ion beam direct milling was
used to create manufacturable SNS type Josephson junctions in 100 nm thick
MgB with T of 38 K. The junctions show non-hysteretic current -
voltage characteristics between 36 and 4.2 K. Experimental evidence for the dc
and ac Josephson effects in MgB metal masked ion damage junctions are
presented. This technique is particularly useful for prototyping devices due to
its simplicity and flexibility of fabrication and has a great potential for

Effect of Nonlinear Multi-axial Elasticity and Anisotropic Plasticity on Quasi-static Dent Properties of Automotive Steel Sheets
This study investigates the influence of the elasto-plastic properties of automotive steel sheets on the denting behavior and suggests a constitutive modeling approach for reliable dent analysis. The stress strain behaviors of three kinds of steel sheets were measured in uniaxial tension, in-plane biaxial tension and forward-reverse simple shear tests. Advanced constitutive models were employed to capture the plastic anisotropy, reverse loading characteristics such as the Bauschinger effect, and elastic modulus degradation. In particular, the biaxial elastic modulus and its degradation behavior were measured and implemented in the constitutive model. The suggested model significantly improved the prediction of dents compared to the conventional model in terms of the load-displacement curve. Sensitivity studies on the constitutive model demonstrated that mainly plastic anisotropy and elastic behavior of a material influence the panel stiffness, whereas the reverse loading behavior strongly affects the permanent dent depth. Positive effects of methylphenidate on hyperactivity are moderated by monoaminergic gene variants in children with autism spectrum disorders.
Methylphenidate (MPH) reduces hyperactive-impulsive symptoms common in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), however, response and tolerability varies widely. We hypothesized monoaminergic gene variants may moderate MPH effects in ASD, as in typically developing children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Genotype data were available for 64 children with ASD and hyperactivity who were exposed to MPH during a 1-week safety/tolerability lead-in phase and 58 who went on to be randomized to placebo and three doses of MPH during a 4-week blinded, crossover study. Outcome measures included the Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I) scale and the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC-hyperactivity index). A total of 14 subjects discontinued the study because of MPH side effects. Subjects were genotyped for variants in DRD1-DRD5, ADRA2A, SLC6A3, SLC6A4, MAOA and MAOB, and COMT. Forty-nine percent of the sample met positive responder criteria. In this modest but relatively homogeneous sample, significant differences by DRD1 (P=0.006), ADRA2A (P<0.02), COMT (P<0.04), DRD3 (P<0.05), DRD4 (P<0.05), SLC6A3 (P<0.05) and SLC6A4 (P<0.05) genotypes were found for responders versus non-responders. Variants in DRD2 (P<0.001) and DRD3 (P<0.04) were associated with tolerability in the 14 subjects who discontinued the trial. For this first MPH pharmacogenetic study in children with ASD, multiple monoaminergic gene variants may help explain individual differences in MPH's efficacy and tolerability

Human Cytomegalovirus: detection of congenital and perinatal infection in Argentina
BACKGROUND: Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of the most commonly found agents of congenital infections. Primary maternal infection is associated with risk of symptomatic congenital diseases, and high morbidity is frequently associated with very low birth weight. Neonates with asymptomatic infection develop various sequelae during infancy. This is the first Argentine study performed in neonates with congenital and postnatal HCMV infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique with different pairs of primers, to detect cytomegalovirus isolated in tissue cultures and directly in urine and dried blood spot (DBS) specimens. Results were compared with IgM detection. METHODS: The study was performed between 1999 and 2001 on routine samples in the Laboratory. A total of 61 urine and 56 serum samples were selected from 61 newborns/infants, 33 patients whose samples were analyzed during the first two to three weeks of life were considered congenital infections; the remaining 28 patients whose samples were taken later than the third week were grouped as perinatal infections, although only in 4 the perinatal transmission of infection was determined unequivocally Cytomegalovirus diagnosis was made by isolating the virus from urine samples in human foreskin fibroblast cells. Three different primer pairs directed to IE, LA and gB genes were used for the HCMV PCR assay in viral isolates. Subsequently, PCR and nested PCR (nPCR) assays with gB primers were performed directly in urine and in 11 samples of dried blood spot (DBS) on Guthrie Card, these results were then compared with serology. RESULTS: The main clinical manifestations of the 33 patients with congenital infection were purpura, jaundice, hepatomegaly and anaemia. Three patients presented low birth weight as single symptom, 10, intracranial calcifications, and 2, kidney failure. In the 28 patients grouped as with perinatal infection, anaemia, hepatosplenomegaly and enzymatic alteration were predominant, and 4 patients were HIV positive. The primers used to amplify the gB region had a PCR positivity rate of 100%, whereas those that amplified IE and LA regions had a PCR positivity rate of 54% and 61% respectively, in CMV isolates. Amplification by PCR of urine samples (with no previous DNA extraction), using primers for the gB region, detected 34/61 positive samples. Out of the 33 samples from patients with congenital infection, 24 (73%) were positive. When nPCR was used in these samples, all were positive, whereas in the remaining 28 patients, two negative cases were found. Cytomegalovirus DNA detection in 11 samples was also carried out in DBS: 7 DBS samples were positive and 4 were negative. CONCLUSIONS: Primers directed to the gB fragment region were the best choice for the detection of CMV DNA in positive isolates. In congenital infections, direct PCR in urine was positive in a high percentage (73%) of samples; however, in patients grouped as with perinatal infection only 36% of the cases were positive. With n-PCR, total sample positivity reached 97%. PCR technique performed in DBS allowed identifying congenital infection in four patients and to be confirmed in 3. These results show the value of nPCR for the detection of all cases of CMV infection. The assay offers the advantage that it may be performed within the normal working day and provides reliable results in a much shorter time frame than that required for either traditional tissue culture or the shell-viral assay
Vertex importance extension of betweenness centrality algorithm
Variety of real-life structures can be simplified by a graph. Such simplification emphasizes the structure represented by vertices connected via edges. A common method for the analysis of the vertices importance in a network is betweenness centrality. The centrality is computed using the information about the shortest paths that exist in a graph. This approach puts the importance on the edges that connect the vertices. However, not all vertices are equal. Some of them might be more important than others or have more significant influence on the behavior of the network. Therefore, we introduce the modification of the betweenness centrality algorithm that takes into account the vertex importance. This approach allows the further refinement of the betweenness centrality score to fulfill the needs of the network better. We show this idea on an example of the real traffic network. We test the performance of the algorithm on the traffic network data from the city of Bratislava, Slovakia to prove that the inclusion of the modification does not hinder the original algorithm much. We also provide a visualization of the traffic network of the city of Ostrava, the Czech Republic to show the effect of the vertex importance adjustment.
