Chromaticity dependence of the transverse effective impedance in the CERN Proton Synchrotron
The current knowledge of the transverse beam coupling impedance of the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) has been established with beam-based measurements at different energies. The transverse coherent tune shift as a function of the beam intensity has been measured in order to evaluate the total effective imaginary part of the transverse impedance in the accelerator at the energies of 7, 13 and 25 GeV. Measurements have been performed changing the vertical chromaticity
for each vertical tune scan with intensity. The data analysis revealed an increase of impedance with chromaticity for all the considered energies. The transverse impedance
can be compared with the previously evaluated theoretical impedance budget taking into account the individual contribution of several machine devices
Baseline LHC machine parameters and configuration of the 2015 proton run
This paper shows the baseline LHC machine parameters for the 2015 start-up.
Many systems have been upgraded during LS1 and in 2015 the LHC will operate at
a higher energy than before and with a tighter filling scheme. Therefore, the
2015 commissioning phase risks to be less smooth than in 2012. The proposed
starting configuration puts the focus on feasibility rather than peak
performance and includes margins for operational uncertainties. Instead, once
beam experience and a better machine knowledge has been obtained, a push in
and performance can be envisaged. In this paper, the focus is on
collimation settings and reach in ---other parameters are covered in
greater depth by other papers in these proceedings.Comment: submitted for publication in a CERN yellow report (Proceedings of the

Transverse impedance localization using intensity dependent optics
Measurements of transverse impedance in the SPS to track the evolution over the last few years show discrepancies compared to the analytical estimates of the major contributors. Recent measurements to localize the major sources of the transverse impedance using intensity dependent optics are presented. Some simulations using HEADTAIL to understand the limitations of the reconstruction and related numerical aspects are also discussed
Status of LHC Crab Cavity simulations and beam studies
The LHC crab cavity program is advancing rapidly towards a first prototype which is anticipated to be tested during the early stages of the LHC phase I upgrade and commissioning. The general project status and some aspects related to crab optics, collimation, aperture constraints, impedances, noise effects, beam transparency and machine protection critical for a safe and robust operation of LHC beams with crab cavities are addressed here
The UA9 experimental layout
The UA9 experimental equipment was installed in the CERN-SPS in March '09
with the aim of investigating crystal assisted collimation in coasting mode.
Its basic layout comprises silicon bent crystals acting as primary
collimators mounted inside two vacuum vessels. A movable 60 cm long block of
tungsten located downstream at about 90 degrees phase advance intercepts the
deflected beam.
Scintillators, Gas Electron Multiplier chambers and other beam loss monitors
measure nuclear loss rates induced by the interaction of the beam halo in the
crystal. Roman pots are installed in the path of the deflected particles and
are equipped with a Medipix detector to reconstruct the transverse distribution
of the impinging beam. Finally UA9 takes advantage of an LHC-collimator
prototype installed close to the Roman pot to help in setting the beam
conditions and to analyze the efficiency to deflect the beam. This paper
describes in details the hardware installed to study the crystal collimation
during 2010.Comment: 15pages, 11 figure, submitted to JINS

Design, production and first commissioning results of the electrical feedboxes of the LHC
A total of 44 CERN designed cryogenic electrical feedboxes are needed to power the LHC superconducting magnets. The feedboxes include more than 1000 superconducting circuits fed by high temperature superconductor and conventional current leads ranging from 120 A to 13 kA. In addition to providing the electrical current to the superconducting circuits, they also ensure specific mechanical and cryogenic functions for the LHC. The paper focuses on the main design aspects and related production operations and gives an overview of specific technologies employed. Results of the commissioning of the feedboxes of the first LHC sectors are presented
Rivastigmine decreases brain damage in HIV patients with mild cognitive deficits.
Rivastigmine has been shown to improve cognition in HIV+ patients with minor neurocognitive disorders; however, the mechanisms underlying such beneficial effect are currently unknown. To assess whether rivastigmine therapy is associated with decreased brain inflammation and damage, we performed T1/T2* relaxometry and magnetization transfer imaging in 17 aviremic HIV+ patients with minor neurocognitive disorders enrolled on a crossed over randomized rivastigmine trial. Rivastigmine therapy was associated with changes in MRI metrics indicating a decrease in brain water content (i.e., edema reabsorption) and/or reduced demyelination/axonal damage. Furthermore, MRI changes correlated with cognitive improvement on rivastigmine therapy
Observation of focusing of 400 GeV/c proton beam with the help of bent crystals
The results of observation and studies of focusing of 400 GeV/ c proton beam with the help of bent single crystals are presented. Two silicon crystals have been used in the measurements. The focal length of the first and second crystals is found to be 1.48 m and 0.68 m, respectively. The mean square size of the horizontal profile in the focus was 3.1 and 4.3 times as small as at the exit of the crystals
