    Managing performance in quality management: A two level study of employee-perceptions and workplace-performance

    Purpose: This paper addresses potential effects of the control element in Quality Management. First, behavioural theories on how elements of performance management can affect organisational performance are examined. Secondly, theoretical models on how perceptions of work conditions may impact wellbeing and performance are considered. Direct and indirect pathways from performance management to productivity/quality are inferred. Methodology: Matched employee-workplace data from an economy-wide survey in Britain and two-level structural equation models are used to test the hypothesised associations. Findings: The use of practices in workplaces is inconsistent with a unified performance management approach. Distinct outcomes are expected from separate components in performance management and some may be contingent on workplace size. For example, within Quality-planning, strategy dissemination is positively associated with workplace-productivity; targets are negatively associated with perceptions of job demands and positively correlated with job satisfaction, which in turn can increase workplace-productivity. With respect to Information & Analysis: keeping and analysing records, or monitoring employee-performance via appraisals that assess training needs, are positively associated with workplace-productivity and quality. Originality: This paper illustrates how control in Quality Management can be effective. Although the merits of performance management are subject to ongoing debate, arguments in the literature have tended to focus on performance appraisal. Analyses of economy-wide data linking performance management practices, within Quality Management, to employee perceptions of work conditions, wellbeing and aggregate performance are rare

    Varying Alpha Monopoles

    We study static magnetic monopoles in the context of varying alpha theories and show that there is a group of models for which the t'Hooft-Polyakov solution is still valid. Nevertheless, in general static magnetic monopole solutions in varying alpha theories depart from the classical t'Hooft-Polyakov solution with the electromagnetic energy concentrated inside the core seeding spatial variations of the fine structure constant. We show that Equivalence Principle constraints impose tight limits on the allowed variations of alpha induced by magnetic monopoles which confirms the difficulty to generate significant large-scale spatial variation of the fine structure constant found in previous works. This is true even in the most favorable case where magnetic monopoles are the source for these variations.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures; Version to be published in Phys. Rev.

    Impurity segregation in graphene nanoribbons

    The electronic properties of low-dimensional materials can be engineered by doping, but in the case of graphene nanoribbons (GNR) the proximity of two symmetry-breaking edges introduces an additional dependence on the location of an impurity across the width of the ribbon. This introduces energetically favorable locations for impurities, leading to a degree of spatial segregation in the impurity concentration. We develop a simple model to calculate the change in energy of a GNR system with an arbitrary impurity as that impurity is moved across the ribbon and validate its findings by comparison with ab initio calculations. Although our results agree with previous works predicting the dominance of edge disorder in GNR, we argue that the distribution of adsorbed impurities across a ribbon may be controllable by external factors, namely an applied electric field. We propose that this control over impurity segregation may allow manipulation and fine-tuning of the magnetic and transport properties of GNRs.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitte

    Metabolic profiling of rhizobacteria Serratia plymuthica and Bacillus subtilis revealed intra- and interspecific differences and elicitation of plipastatins and short peptides due to co-cultivation

    Rhizobacteria live in diverse and dynamic communities having a high impact on plant growth and development. Due to the complexity of the microbial communities and the difficult accessibility of the rhizosphere, investigations of interactive processes within this bacterial network are challenging. In order to better understand causal relationships between individual members of the microbial community of plants, we started to investigate the inter- and intraspecific interaction potential of three rhizobacteria, the S. plymuthica isolates 4Rx13 and AS9 and B. subtilis B2g, using high resolution mass spectrometry based metabolic profiling of structured, low-diversity model communities. We found that by metabolic profiling we are able to detect metabolite changes during cultivation of all three isolates. The metabolic profile of S. plymuthica 4Rx13 differs interspecifically to B. subtilis B2g and surprisingly intraspecifically to S. plymuthica AS9. Thereby, the release of different secondary metabolites represents one contributing factor of inter- and intraspecific variations in metabolite profiles. Interspecific co-cultivation of S. plymuthica 4Rx13 and B. subtilis B2g showed consistently distinct metabolic profiles compared to mono-cultivated species. Thereby, putative known and new variants of the plipastatin family are increased in the co-cultivation of S. plymuthica 4Rx13 and B. subtilis B2g. Interestingly, intraspecific co-cultivation of S. plymuthica 4Rx13 and S. plymuthica AS9 revealed a distinct interaction zone and showed distinct metabolic profiles compared to mono-cultures. Thereby, several putative short proline-containing peptides are increased in co-cultivation of S. plymuthica 4Rx13 with S. plymuthica AS9 compared to mono-cultivated strains. Our results demonstrate that the release of metabolites by rhizobacteria alters due to growth and induced by social interactions between single members of the microbial community. These results form a basis to elucidate the functional role of such interaction-triggered compounds in establishment and maintenance of microbial communities and can be applied under natural and more realistic conditions, since rhizobacteria also interact with the plant itself and many other members of plant and soil microbiota
