    Fusion of Multisensor Data Based on Different Multidimensional Distributions

    The paper addresses problems related to classification of images obtained by various types of remote sensing devices. Development and use of Bayes type land cover classifiers based on multidimensional Gaussian, Dirichlet and gamma distributions is analysed and compared on the basis of sample data from RGB and hyperspectral thermal sensing devices with unequal spatial resolution. Approaches to data fusion for design of the combined classifiers are presented including the cases where different families of multidimensional distributions are used to model the sensor data and classifiers are designed using combinations of their probability density functions. The best classification results are obtained when the fusion of data from both images is used together with classification based on all three considered distributions combined together

    Potential of Core-Collapse Supernova Neutrino Detection at JUNO

    JUNO is an underground neutrino observatory under construction in Jiangmen, China. It uses 20kton liquid scintillator as target, which enables it to detect supernova burst neutrinos of a large statistics for the next galactic core-collapse supernova (CCSN) and also pre-supernova neutrinos from the nearby CCSN progenitors. All flavors of supernova burst neutrinos can be detected by JUNO via several interaction channels, including inverse beta decay, elastic scattering on electron and proton, interactions on C12 nuclei, etc. This retains the possibility for JUNO to reconstruct the energy spectra of supernova burst neutrinos of all flavors. The real time monitoring systems based on FPGA and DAQ are under development in JUNO, which allow prompt alert and trigger-less data acquisition of CCSN events. The alert performances of both monitoring systems have been thoroughly studied using simulations. Moreover, once a CCSN is tagged, the system can give fast characterizations, such as directionality and light curve

    Real-time Monitoring for the Next Core-Collapse Supernova in JUNO

    Core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the Universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the SN burst is a unique opportunity to realize the multi-messenger observation of the CCSN events. In this work, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to the pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), which is a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed with both the prompt monitors on the electronic board and online monitors at the data acquisition stage, in order to ensure both the alert speed and alert coverage of progenitor stars. By assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system can be sensitive to the pre-SN neutrinos up to the distance of about 1.6 (0.9) kpc and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kpc for a progenitor mass of 30MM_{\odot} for the case of normal (inverted) mass ordering. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by using the accumulated event anisotropy of the inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos, which, along with the early alert, can play important roles for the followup multi-messenger observations of the next Galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

    Detection of the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with JUNO

    As an underground multi-purpose neutrino detector with 20 kton liquid scintillator, Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is competitive with and complementary to the water-Cherenkov detectors on the search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). Typical supernova models predict 2-4 events per year within the optimal observation window in the JUNO detector. The dominant background is from the neutral-current (NC) interaction of atmospheric neutrinos with 12C nuclei, which surpasses the DSNB by more than one order of magnitude. We evaluated the systematic uncertainty of NC background from the spread of a variety of data-driven models and further developed a method to determine NC background within 15\% with {\it{in}} {\it{situ}} measurements after ten years of running. Besides, the NC-like backgrounds can be effectively suppressed by the intrinsic pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) capabilities of liquid scintillators. In this talk, I will present in detail the improvements on NC background uncertainty evaluation, PSD discriminator development, and finally, the potential of DSNB sensitivity in JUNO

    Automatic Identification of Individual Tree Crowns in Mixed Forests Using Fusion of LIDAR and Multispectral Data

    One of the most important steps in performing automated forest inventory at the individual tree level using remote sensing data is the identification of individual trees. The aim of this paper is to present a LIDAR and multispectral data fusion approach exploiting Template Matching (TM) method for individual tree identification and evaluate its accuracy comparing with single data source cases. Data fusion was achieved in two ways: 1) at pixel level combining data sets using principal components transform and wavelet decomposition, and 2) at feature level by combining intermediate results of the TM method. The best overall accuracy, namely 76%, was achieved by employing wavelet decomposition based data fusion; however this result does not outwork a lot the usage of LIDAR data set alone

    Automated Delineation of Microstands in Hemiboreal Mixed Forests Using Stereo GeoEye-1 Data

    A microstand is a small forest area with a homogeneous tree species, height, and density composition. High-spatial-resolution GeoEye-1 multispectral (MS) images and GeoEye-1-based canopy height models (CHMs) allow delineating microstands automatically. This paper studied the potential benefits of two microstand segmentation workflows: (1) our modification of JSEG and (2) generic region merging (GRM) of the Orfeo Toolbox, both intended for the microstand border refinement and automated stand volume estimation in hemiboreal forests. Our modification of JSEG uses a CHM as the primary data source for segmentation by refining the results using MS data. Meanwhile, the CHM and multispectral data fusion were achieved as multiband segmentation for the GRM workflow. The accuracy was evaluated using several sets of metrics (unsupervised, supervised direct assessment, and system-level assessment). Metrics were calculated for a regular segment grid to check the benefits compared with the simple image patches. The metrics showed very similar results for both workflows. The most successful combinations in the workflow parameters retrieved over 75 % of the boundaries selected by a human interpreter. However, the impact of data fusion and parameter combinations on stand volume estimation accuracy was minimal, causing variations of the RMSE within approximately 7 m3/ha

    Melanoma-Nevus Discrimination Based on Image Statistics in Few Spectral Channels

    The purpose of this paper is to offer a method for discrimination of cutaneous melanoma from benign nevus, founded on analysis of skin lesion image. At the core of method is calculation of mean and standard deviation of pixel optical density values for a few narrow spectral bands. Calculated values are compared with discriminating thresholds derived from a set of images of benign nevi and melanomas with known diagnosis. Classification is done applying weighted majority rule to results of thresholding. Verification against the available multispectral images of 32 melanomas and 94 benign nevi has shown that the method using three spectral bands provided zero false negative and four false positive melanoma detections. The proposed classifier is characterized by high sensitivity and specificity concerning statistical point estimates whereas its possible technical implementation is fairly simple. The proposed method may be instrumental for designing low cost diagnostic equipment to be used in primary care that is important for early detection of cutaneous melanoma

    Mass Testing and Characterization of 20-inch PMTs for JUNO

    Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3 % at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5,000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK)

    Measuring low energy atmospheric neutrino spectra with the JUNO detector

    Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about Cosmic Rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric νe\nu_e and νμ\nu_\mu fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrinos Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3" PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since νe\nu_e and νμ\nu_\mu interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region

    Model Independent Approach of the JUNO 8^8B Solar Neutrino Program

    The physics potential of detecting 8^8B solar neutrinos is exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged-current (CC), neutral-current (NC) and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of 13^{13}C nuclei in the liquid-scintillator detectors and the potential low background level, 8^8B solar neutrinos would be observable in the CC and NC interactions on 13^{13}C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC and ES channels to guarantee the 8^8B solar neutrino observation. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that one can reach the precision levels of 5%, 8% and 20% for the 8^8B neutrino flux, sin2θ12\sin^2\theta_{12}, and Δm212\Delta m^2_{21}, respectively, using ten years of JUNO data. It would be unique and helpful to probe the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics. In addition, when combined with SNO, the world-best precision of 3% is expected for the 8^8B neutrino flux measurement
