Extracellular Hsp72 concentration relates to a minimum endogenous criteria during acute exercise-heat exposure
Extracellular heat-shock protein 72 (eHsp72) concentration increases during exercise-heat stress when conditions elicit physiological strain. Differences in severity of environmental and exercise stimuli have elicited varied response to stress. The present study aimed to quantify the extent of increased eHsp72 with increased exogenous heat stress, and determine related endogenous markers of strain in an exercise-heat model. Ten males cycled for 90 min at 50% O2peak in three conditions (TEMP, 20°C/63% RH; HOT, 30.2°C/51%RH; VHOT, 40.0°C/37%RH). Plasma was analysed for eHsp72 pre, immediately post and 24-h post each trial utilising a commercially available ELISA. Increased eHsp72 concentration was observed post VHOT trial (+172.4%) (P<0.05), but not TEMP (-1.9%) or HOT (+25.7%) conditions. eHsp72 returned to baseline values within 24hrs in all conditions. Changes were observed in rectal temperature (Trec), rate of Trec increase, area under the curve for Trec of 38.5°C and 39.0°C, duration Trec ≥ 38.5°C and ≥ 39.0°C, and change in muscle temperature, between VHOT, and TEMP and HOT, but not between TEMP and HOT. Each condition also elicited significantly increasing physiological strain, described by sweat rate, heart rate, physiological strain index, rating of perceived exertion and thermal sensation. Stepwise multiple regression reported rate of Trec increase and change in Trec to be predictors of increased eHsp72 concentration. Data suggests eHsp72 concentration increases once systemic temperature and sympathetic activity exceeds a minimum endogenous criteria elicited during VHOT conditions and is likely to be modulated by large, rapid changes in core temperature
Anthropometry and body composition in ethnic Japanese and Caucasian adolescent girls: Considerations on ethnicity and menarche
Objective: This study aimed to compare the various anthropometric and body composition parameters based on the ethnicity and the absence or presence of menarche.Design: A cross-sectional study with incomplete sampling, using the subject as the evaluation unit.Subjects: the final sample of 550 subjects was composed of 122 Japanese and 179 Caucasian premenarcheal adolescents, and 72 Japanese and 177 Caucasian postmenarcheal adolescents.Methods: the variables of body composition were measured through the following methods: bioelectrical impedance analysis, near-infrared interactance (NIR), Slaughter cutaneous skinfold equations and body mass index. Weight, height and sitting height were also evaluated.Results: the Japanese pre- and postmenarcheal girls presented lower weight and height values when compared with the Caucasian girls. in general, the Japanese premenarcheal girls presented less fat and fat-free mass than the premenarcheal Caucasian girls. This fact was demonstrated through NIR results. Conversely, the Japanese postmenarcheal adolescents accumulated more fat than their Caucasian counterparts. However, significant differences were solely encountered in the values of cutaneous skinfold percent body fat. Health enhancing strength training in nonagenarians (STRONG): rationale, design and methods
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Health Enhancing Strength Training in Nonagenarians (STRONG) is a randomised control trial to assess the effectiveness of an aerobic and strength training program for improving muscle strength, functional capacity and quality of life in nonagenarians.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixty (51 women) nonagenarians (age range: 90–102 years) who live in a geriatric nursing home will be randomly assigned to either a usual care (control) group (n = 30) or an intervention (training) group (n = 30). Participants allocated in the usual care group will receive general physical activity guidelines and participants allocated in the intervention group will also enrol in three weekly non-consecutive individualized training sessions (~45–50 min each) during 8 weeks. The exercise program will consist of muscular strength [with a special focus on leg press at 30% (start of the program) to 70% 1 repetition maximum (end)] and aerobic exercises (cycle-ergometry during 3–5 to 15 minutes at 12–14 points in the rate of perceived exertion scale).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Results from STRONG will help to better understand the potential of regular physical activity for improving the well-being of the oldest population groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The increase in life expectancy together with the dramatic decrease in birth rates in industrialized countries calls the attention to health care systems and public health policymakers to focus attention on promoting healthy lifestyle in the highest sector of the population pyramid. Our study attempts to improve functional capacity and QOL of nonagenarians by implementing an individualised aerobic and strength training program in a geriatric residential care. Results from STRONG will help to better understand the potential of regular physical activity for improving the well being even in persons aged 90 years or over.</p> <p>Trail Registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT00848978</p
Cost-effectiveness of an intensive group training protocol compared to physiotherapy guideline care for sub-acute and chronic low back pain: design of a randomised controlled trial with an economic evaluation. [ISRCTN45641649]
BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a common disorder in western industrialised countries and the type of treatments for low back pain vary considerably. METHODS: In a randomised controlled trial the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of an intensive group training protocol versus physiotherapy guideline care for sub-acute and chronic low back pain patients is evaluated. Patients with back pain for longer than 6 weeks who are referred to physiotherapy care by their general practitioner or medical specialist are included in the study. The intensive group training protocol combines exercise therapy with principles of behavioural therapy ("graded activity") and back school. This training protocol is compared to physiotherapy care according to the recently published Low Back Pain Guidelines of the Royal Dutch College for Physiotherapy. Primary outcome measures are general improvement, pain intensity, functional status, work absenteeism and quality of life. The direct and indirect costs will be assessed using cost diaries. Patients will complete questionnaires at baseline and 6, 13, 26 and 52 weeks after randomisation. DISCUSSION: No trials are yet available that have evaluated the effect of an intensive group training protocol including behavioural principles and back school in a primary physiotherapy care setting and no data on cost-effectiveness and cost-utility are available
Consumo de álcool por frequentadores de academia de ginástica
Objetivo Como não há na literatura informações sobre o perfil de consumo alcoólico entre desportistas, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o perfil de consumo alcoólico por frequentadores de academia de ginástica associando com a antropometria e a intensidade do treino. Métodos Foram convidados a participar do estudo indivíduos praticantes de musculação, por no mínimo seis meses, com idade entre 20 e 40 anos, de ambos os sexos. Foram realizadas medidas antropométricas e de composição corporal. Para avaliação do consumo alcoólico, utilizou-se o questionário AUDIT (The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). A intensidade do treino foi identificada por meio de um questionário semiestruturado. Resultados Dos participantes, 74,1% (n = 35) disseram ter feito uso de álcool. Além disso, 19 voluntários (38,8%) apresentaram comportamento de risco para o consumo de álcool (AUDIT ≥ 8). Considerando o consumo alcoólico em binge, 32 voluntários (65,3%) consumiram seis ou mais doses de álcool em alguma ocasião no ano anterior, não havendo diferença entre os sexos. A adiposidade corporal estava acima dos valores recomendados entre os que relataram consumo em binge. Não houve associação entre a intensidade do treinamento físico e o consumo de álcool em binge, nem entre a intensidade do treinamento e o comportamento de risco para o consumo de álcool. Conclusão A maioria dos desportistas apresentou consumo de bebidas alcoólicas no padrão binge, não sendo associado à intensidade do treinamento. Este não condiz com os seus objetivos ao frequentar academias de ginástica. A adiposidade corporal estava acima dos valores recomendados
