    Investigation into impact of train speed for behaviour of ballasted railway track foundations

    Traffic congestion of highways in many countries around the world has led railways to become the most popular means of public transportation, which increased the demand for faster and heavier trains. High-speed trains and heavy train loads are normally accompanied with strong vibrations in the track-ground system, which increases the risk of train derailment and track damages. Therefore, to allow for safer and reliable operation of high-speed trains, an investigation into the behavior of ballasted railway track foundations subjected to train moving loads at various speeds is a subject of prime importance in design of railway tracks. In the current study, sophisticated three dimensional (3D) finite elements (FE) numerical modelling was developed to investigate the impact of train speed on the dynamic response of track-ground system. In addition, some factors of the track-ground system affecting the critical speed including the modulus and thickness of track subgrade and ballast materials, and amplitude of train loading were investigated. The results were analyzed and presented, and their practical implications were discussed

    Sezary Syndrome presenting with leonine facies and treated with low-dose subcutaneous alemtuzumab

    Abstract Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL) comprise a group of diseases characterized by the accumulation of malignant T cells within the skin. Sezary syndrome represents an aggressive form of CTCL, in which the skin is diffusely affected and the peripheral blood is involved. It is characterized by the triad of generalized erythroderma, lymphadenopathy, and neoplastic T cells (Sezary cells) in the skin, lymph nodes, and peripheral blood. Leonine facies is rare and corresponds to the morphologic manifestation of diffuse dermal infiltration of the face. It can occur in cutaneous T-cell lymphomas that progress during years without therapy. We present the case of a 54-year-old man with Sezary syndrome presenting with leonine facies, unresponsive to conventional therapies; he exhibited a promising response to subcutaneous low-dose alemtuzumab. A 54-year-old male was observed in our department because of a four-year history of generalized pruritus and cutaneous lesions on the face. On physical examination he showed generalized erythroderma, lichenification, diffuse alopecia, madarosis, and diffuse infiltration of facial skin, particularly on the eyebrows and ears, giving the appearance of a leonine facies The full blood count revealed 18.59x10 9 /L leukocytes, 7.81 x10 9 /L neutrophils, 1.39 x10 9 /L lymphocytes, hemoglobin 15.2 g/dL, and platelets 395 x10 9 /L, with 45.5 percent of atypical lymphocytes. Biochemistry studies were relevant for high LDH (430 UI/L) and high β2-microglobulin (2341 ng/mL) levels. Thoracic, abdominal and pelvic CT scans were unremarkable and the bone marrow biopsy revealed invasion of atypical lymphocytic cells. Flow cytometry and molecular biology studies confirmed the presence of the phenotypically abnormal monoclonal CD4+ T cells in the peripheral blood and bone marrow. The diagnosis of Sezary syndrome (SS) (T4NxM0B2) was made. The patient started combined systemic chemotherapy with CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) accomplishing four cycles with no response. A regimen of low dose subcutaneous (sc) alemtuzumab was then introduced, beginning with 3 mg in the first day, followed by 10 mg three times a week for twelve weeks.     SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF alpha-ZIRCONIUM (IV) HYDROGENPHOSPHATE CONTAINING METALLIC COPPER CLUSTERS. The alpha-zirconium (IV) hydroggeriphosphate (alpha-ZrP) has received great attention in the last years due to its properties like ion exchange, intercalation, ionic conductivity and catalytic activity. This work reports a method to produce metallic copper clusters on alpha-ZrP to be used as catalysts in petrochemical processes. It was found that the solids were non-crystalline regardless of the uptake of copper and the reduction. The specific surface area increased as a consequence of the increase of the interlayer distance to accept the copper ions between the layers. During the reduction, big clusters of copper (0,5-11mu) with different sizes and shapes were produced.281464

    Use and commercialization of Podocnemis expansa (Schweiger 1812) (Testudines: Podocnemididae) for medicinal purposes in two communities in North of Brazil

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Throughout Brazil a large number of people seek out reptiles for their meat, leather, ornamental value and supposed medicinal importance. However, there is a dearth of information on the use of reptiles in folk medicine. In North Brazil, the freshwater turtle, <it>Podocnemis expansa</it>, is one of the most frequently used species in traditional medicines. Many products derived from <it>P. expansa </it>are utilized in rural areas and also commercialized in outdoor markets as a cure or treatment for different diseases. Here we document the use and commercialization of <it>P. expansa </it>for medicinal purposes in the state of Pará, Northern Brazil.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were gathered through interview-questionnaires, with some questions left open-ended. Information was collected in two localities in Pará State, North of Brazil. In the City of Belém, data was collected through interviews with 23 herbs or root sellers (13 men and 10 women). Attempts were made to interview all animal merchants in the markets visited. In fishing community of the Pesqueiro Beach, interviews were done with 41 inhabitants (23 men and 18 women) and during the first contacts with the local population, we attempted to identify local people with a specialized knowledge of medicinal animal usage.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>P. expansa </it>was traded for use in traditional medicines and cosmetics. Fat and egg shells were used to treat 16 different diseases. Turtle fat was the main product sold. The demand for these products is unknown. However, the use of this species in folk medicine might have a considerable impact on wild population, and this must be taken into account for the conservation and management of this species.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results indicated that the use and commercialization of <it>P. expansa </it>products for medicinal purposes is common in North of Brazil. More studies regarding the use and commerce of Brazilian turtles are urgently needed in order to evaluate the real impact of such activities on natural populations. We hope that our findings about the trade and use of <it>P. expansa </it>in folk medicine will motivate further studies on the use of animals in folk medicine and its implications for conservation.</p

    Nintedanib in patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease: subgroup analyses by autoantibody status and skin score

    OBJECTIVE: We used data from the SENSCIS trial to assess the effects of nintedanib versus placebo in subgroups of patients with SSc-ILD based on characteristics associated with progression of SSc-ILD in previous studies. METHODS: Patients with SSc-ILD were randomized to receive nintedanib or placebo, stratified by anti-topoisomerase I antibody (ATA) status. We assessed the rate of decline in forced vital capacity (FVC) (mL/year) over 52 weeks in subgroups by baseline ATA status, modified Rodnan skin score (mRSS) ( 0.05 for all). CONCLUSION: In patients with SSc-ILD, no heterogeneity was detected in the treatment effect of nintedanib in reducing the annual rate of decline in FVC across subgroups based on ATA status, mRSS, and SSc subtype

    Hygienic quality of dehydrated aromatic herbs marketed in Southern Portugal

    Dehydrated aromatic herbs are highly valued ingredients, widely used at home level and by food processing industry, frequently added to a great number of recipes in the Mediterranean countries. Despite being considered low-moisture products and classified as GRAS, during pre and post-harvesting stages of production they are susceptible of microbial contamination. In Europe an increasing number of food recalls and disease outbreaks associated with dehydrated herbs have been reported in recent years. In this study the microbial quality of 99 samples of aromatic herbs (bay leaves, basil, coriander, oregano, parsley, Provence herbs, rosemary and thyme) collected from retails shops in the region of Algarve (Southern Portugal) was assessed. All the samples were tested by conventional methods and were assayed for the total count of aerobic mesophilic microorganisms, Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, coagulase-positive staphylococci and filamentous fungi. Almost 50 % of the herbs did not exceed the aerobic mesophilic level of 104 CFU/g. The fungi count regarded as unacceptable (106 CFU/g) was not found in any of the tested herbs, while 84 % of the samples ranged from ≤102 to 104 CFU/g. No sample was positive for the presence of Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli and staphylococci. The results are in compliance with the European Commission criteria although they point out to the permanent need of surveillance on the good standards of handling/cooking practices as well as the importance of avoiding contamination at production, retailing and distribution. The microbiological hazards associated with the pathogenic and toxigenic microbiota of dried herbs remain as a relevant public health issue, due to the fact that they are added to foods not submitted to any following lethal procedure.     Evidence for distinct coastal and offshore communities of bottlenose dolphins in the north east Atlantic.

    Bottlenose dolphin stock structure in the northeast Atlantic remains poorly understood. However, fine scale photo-id data have shown that populations can comprise multiple overlapping social communities. These social communities form structural elements of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) [corrected] populations, reflecting specific ecological and behavioural adaptations to local habitats. We investigated the social structure of bottlenose dolphins in the waters of northwest Ireland and present evidence for distinct inshore and offshore social communities. Individuals of the inshore community had a coastal distribution restricted to waters within 3 km from shore. These animals exhibited a cohesive, fission-fusion social organisation, with repeated resightings within the research area, within a larger coastal home range. The offshore community comprised one or more distinct groups, found significantly further offshore (>4 km) than the inshore animals. In addition, dorsal fin scarring patterns differed significantly between inshore and offshore communities with individuals of the offshore community having more distinctly marked dorsal fins. Specifically, almost half of the individuals in the offshore community (48%) had characteristic stereotyped damage to the tip of the dorsal fin, rarely recorded in the inshore community (7%). We propose that this characteristic is likely due to interactions with pelagic fisheries. Social segregation and scarring differences found here indicate that the distinct communities are likely to be spatially and behaviourally segregated. Together with recent genetic evidence of distinct offshore and coastal population structures, this provides evidence for bottlenose dolphin inshore/offshore community differentiation in the northeast Atlantic. We recommend that social communities should be considered as fundamental units for the management and conservation of bottlenose dolphins and their habitat specialisations
