A note on the predictions of models with modular flavor symmetries

    Get PDF
Models with modular flavor symmetries have been thought to be highly predictive. We point out that these predictions are subject to corrections from non–holomorphic terms in the Lagrangean. Specifically, in the models discussed in the literature, the Kähler potential is not fixed by the symmetries, for instance. The most general Kähler potential consistent with the symmetries of the model contains additional terms with additional parameters, which reduce the predictive power of these constructions. We also comment on potential ways of how one may conceivably retain the predictivity

Characterising epithelial tissues using persistent entropy

In this paper, we apply persistent entropy, a novel topological statistic, for characterization of images of epithelial tissues. We have found out that persistent entropy is able to summarize topological and geometric information encoded by \alpha-complexes and persistent homology. After using some statistical tests, we can guarantee the existence of significant differences in the studied tissues.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 4 table

To investigate the effects of two different strength-training programs with the same workload (impulse) on throwing velocity in water polo, 30 water polo players (M age = 17.1 yr., SD = 4.9; M mass = 71.2 kg, SD = 14.7; M height = 1.75 m, SD = 0.09 m) were randomly divided in two groups based upon throwing performance with water polo ball. The medicine-ball training group performed 3 x 6 reps with a 3-kg medicine ball, while the combination training group completed 1 x 9 repetitions with the 3-kg medicine ball, followed by 3 x 14 repetitions with a water polo ball. Both groups trained eight weeks twice per week in addition to their regular water polo training. Throwing velocity was measured with a Doppler radar gun before and after the training period. Testing included throws with a water polo ball on land and in water, as well as with 1-kg and 3-kg medicine balls on land. Statistically significant increases were found in mean peak throwing velocity with the water polo, 1-kg, and 3-kg medicine balls after training. No differences between the groups were found, except in throwing velocity with water polo on land, with a statistically significantly larger increase for the combination training group (+7.6%) than the medicine-ball training group (+3.4%). These findings indicate that after training with the same workload (impulse), increases in throwing velocity in water polo are similar and suggesting workload may be a critical variable for training results.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The association of allergic conjunctivitis (AC) with rhinitis and/or asthma is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to apply the Consensus Document for Allergic Conjunctivitis (DECA) criteria for the classification of AC to a population of patients with AC to assess the association between the severity and duration of AC and rhinitis and/or asthma. Methods. Patients with ocular symptoms of AC who participated in the 'Alergológica 2015' study were included. The demographics, classification according to the DECA criteria, etiology, and comorbidities were evaluated by age groups (less or equal than 14 and greater than 14 years). Results. A total of 2,914 patients (age range, 1-90 years) were included in the "Alergológica 2015" study. Of these, 965 patients (33.1%) were diagnosed with AC (77.5% > 14 years). AC was classified as severe, moderate, or mild in 1.8%, 46.4%, and 51.8%, respectively; and as intermittent or persistent in 51.6% and 48.4% of the patients. AC alone occurred in 4% of patients. AC was mainly associated with rhinitis (88.4%), asthma (38.2%), food allergy (8.3%) and atopic dermatitis (3.5%). In allergic respiratory disease rhinitis preceded AC and asthma developed later. The severity and duration of AC was significantly associated with severity and duration of rhinitis (p less than 0.001 for both age groups) and asthma (p less than 0.001 only in adults). Conclusions. The application of the new DECA classification for AC reveals a direct relationship between AC, rhinitis and asthma respect to severity and duration. These relationships suggest that AC should be considered an integral part of the "one airway, one disease" hypothesis

The presence of Angiotensin receptors in erythropoietic bone marrow and marrow stromal cells clearly shows a mechanism forRennin-Angiotensin System-mediated regulation of erythropoiesis. The aim was to study the effects of Angiotensin-ConvertingEnzyme inhibition (ACEI) as Enalapril(E) on erythropoietic response in anemic mice treated with Phenylhydrazine (PHZ) bymeans of hematological and histological studies. Both PHZ and E-PHZ-treated mice showed hemolysis on day 14. Howeverthe restoration of anemic state occurred on day 16 in PHZ-treated mice and on day 20 in E-PHZ-treated mice. Erythropoieticactivity was observed in spleen (day16) and kidney (day20) of E-PHZ-treated mice. In PHZ-treated mice erythropoietic activitywas seen in spleen and kidney on day 16. We conclude that Inhibition of ACE with Enalapril delays the erythropoietic recoveryof hemolytic anemia in E-PHZ-treated mice. Erythropoietic activity in spleen and kidney suggest an involvement of theseorgans in the erythron recovery

Chytridiomycosis outbreak in a Chilean giant frog (Calyptocephalella gayi) captive breeding program: genomic characterization and pathological findings

Emerging infectious diseases in wildlife are increasingly associated with animal mortality and species declines, but their source and genetic characterization often remains elusive. Amphibian chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been associated with catastrophic and well-documented amphibian population declines and extinctions at the global scale. We used histology and whole-genome sequencing to describe the lesions caused by, and the genetic variability of, two Bd isolates obtained from a mass mortality event in a captive population of the threatened Chilean giant frog (Calyptocephalella gayi). This was the first time an association between Bd and high mortality had been detected in this charismatic and declining frog species. Pathological examinations revealed that 30 dead metamorphosed frogs presented agnathia or brachygnathia, a condition that is reported for the first time in association with chytridiomycosis. Phylogenomic analyses revealed that Bd isolates (PA1 and PA2) from captive C. gayi group with other Bd isolates (AVS2, AVS4, and AVS7) forming a single highly supported Chilean Bd clade within the global panzootic lineage of Bd (BdGPL). These findings are important to inform the strengthening of biosecurity measures to prevent the impacts of chytridiomycosis in captive breeding programs elsewhere

Physical properties of chitosan-basil essential oil edible films as affected by oil content and homogenization conditions

[EN] This work studies the influence of basil essential oil, its content and the homogenization treatment on the physical properties of chitosan-based edible films. Two homogenization treatments were applied, without (H1) and with (H2) microfluidization (MF). Composite films were softer, less rigid and more stretchable than pure CH films. MF intensified these changes. H2 films showed microcracks due to the weak interactions between chitosan and oil, which affected their mechanical behaviour. In pure chitosan films, MF significantly increased water vapour permeability. Homogenization treatment greatly affected this property. Gloss was reduced by the essential oil addition, whereas MF tended to yield glossier films. The authors acknowledge the financial support provided by Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (PAID-06-09-2834), Conselleria de Empresa, Universidad y Ciencia (GV/2010/082), and Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (Project AGL2010-20694).Bonilla Lagos, MJ.; Vargas, M.; Atarés Huerta, LM.; Chiralt, A.
