Computational Topology Techniques for Characterizing Time-Series Data
Topological data analysis (TDA), while abstract, allows a characterization of
time-series data obtained from nonlinear and complex dynamical systems. Though
it is surprising that such an abstract measure of structure - counting pieces
and holes - could be useful for real-world data, TDA lets us compare different
systems, and even do membership testing or change-point detection. However, TDA
is computationally expensive and involves a number of free parameters. This
complexity can be obviated by coarse-graining, using a construct called the
witness complex. The parametric dependence gives rise to the concept of
persistent homology: how shape changes with scale. Its results allow us to
distinguish time-series data from different systems - e.g., the same note

The Yo-Yo IE2 Test: Physiological Response for Untrained Men versus Trained Soccer Players
PURPOSE: To examine the physical capacity and physiological response to the Yo-Yo Intermittent Endurance level 2 test (IE2) for untrained individuals and trained male soccer players, and to investigate the determinants of intense intermittent exercise performance. METHODS: Thirty-four healthy untrained males (UTR) and fifteen age-matched trained soccer players (TR) performed a maximal incremental treadmill test (ITT) and a Yo-Yo IE2 test. Muscle biopsies and blood samples were obtained and HR were measured before, during and after tests. RESULTS: UTR had a 67% lower (P95%HRmax was lower (P0.05). CONCLUSION: The Yo-Yo IE2 test was shown to possess high construct validity by showing large differences in performance, heart rates and anaerobic metabolism between untrained individuals and trained soccer players. Additionally, VO2max appeared to be important for intermittent exercise performance in untrained individuals, but not for trained soccer players
Payment for performance (P4P): any future in Italy?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pay for Performance (P4P) programs, based on provision of financial incentives for service quality, have been widely adopted to enhance quality of care and to promote a more efficient use of health care resources whilst improving patient outcomes. In Italy, as in other countries, the growing concern over the quality of health services provided and the scarcity of resources would make P4P programs a useful means of improving their performance. The aim of this paper is to evaluate whether it is possible to implement P4P programs in the Lombardy Region, in Italy, based on the existing data set.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirteen quality measures were identified regarding four clinical conditions (acute myocardial infarction (AMI), heart failure (HF), ischemic stroke and hip and knee replacement) on the basis of an international literature review. Data was collected using the database of three institutions, which included hospital discharge records (Scheda di Dimissione ospedaliera-SDO-) and letters of discharge. The study population was identified using both the Principal ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes and the discharge date. A Statistical Analysis System (SAS) program was used for the text analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>It was possible to calculate almost all the parameters pertaining to the three hospitals as all the data required was available with the exception of inpatient mortality in two hospitals and smoking cessation advice/counseling in one hospital.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>On the ground of this analysis, we believe that it is possible to implement a P4P program in the Lombardy Region. However, for this program to be initiated, all necessary data must be available in electronic format and uniformly collected. Moreover, several other factors must be assessed: which clinical conditions should be included, the threshold for each quality parameter, the amount of financial incentives offered and how they will be provided.</p
Shape-based peak identification for ChIP-Seq
We present a new algorithm for the identification of bound regions from
ChIP-seq experiments. Our method for identifying statistically significant
peaks from read coverage is inspired by the notion of persistence in
topological data analysis and provides a non-parametric approach that is robust
to noise in experiments. Specifically, our method reduces the peak calling
problem to the study of tree-based statistics derived from the data. We
demonstrate the accuracy of our method on existing datasets, and we show that
it can discover previously missed regions and can more clearly discriminate

Match running performance and physical capacity profiles of U8 and U10 soccer players
Aim
This study aimed to characterize match running performance of very young soccer players and evaluate the relationship between these data and physical capacities and technical skills.
Methods
Distances covered at different speed thresholds were measured during 31 official matches using GPS technology in U10 (n = 12; age 10.1 ± 0.1 years) and U8 (n = 15; age 7.9 ± 0.1 years) national soccer players. Counter movement jump performance (CMJ), 20 m shuttle running (20 m-SR), linear sprint performance (10, 20, 30 m), shuttle (SHDT) and slalom dribble tests (SLDT) were performed to determine the players physical capacities and technical skills.
Results
Physical capacities and technical skills were higher in U10 versus U8 players [P 0.05, ES: 0.74). The U10 players covered more total (TD) and high-intensity running distance (HIRD) than their younger counterparts did (P 0.05, ES: 0.99). TD and HIRD covered across the three 15 min periods of match play did not decline (P > 0.05, ES: 0.02–0.55). Very large magnitude correlations were observed between the U8 and U10 players performances during the 20 m-SR versus TD (r = 0.79; P < 0.01) and HIRD (r = 0.82; P < 0.01) covered during match play.
Conclusions
Data demonstrate differences in match running performance and physical capacity between U8 and U10 players, and large magnitude relationships between match play measures and physical test performances. These findings could be useful to sports science staff working within the academies
Rapidly Decaying Supernova 2010X: A Candidate ".Ia" Explosion
We present the discovery, photometric and spectroscopic follow-up
observations of SN 2010X (PTF 10bhp). This supernova decays exponentially with
tau_d=5 days, and rivals the current recordholder in speed, SN 2002bj. SN 2010X
peaks at M_r=-17mag and has mean velocities of 10,000 km/s. Our light curve
modeling suggests a radioactivity powered event and an ejecta mass of 0.16
Msun. If powered by Nickel, we show that the Nickel mass must be very small
(0.02 Msun) and that the supernova quickly becomes optically thin to
gamma-rays. Our spectral modeling suggests that SN 2010X and SN 2002bj have
similar chemical compositions and that one of Aluminum or Helium is present. If
Aluminum is present, we speculate that this may be an accretion induced
collapse of an O-Ne-Mg white dwarf. If Helium is present, all observables of SN
2010X are consistent with being a thermonuclear Helium shell detonation on a
white dwarf, a ".Ia" explosion. With the 1-day dynamic-cadence experiment on
the Palomar Transient Factory, we expect to annually discover a few such

A Systems Approach to Improving Rural Care in Ethiopia
Background: Multiple interventions have been launched to improve the quality, access, and utilization of primary health care in rural, low-income settings; however, the success of these interventions varies substantially, even within single studies where the measured impact of interventions differs across sites, centers, and regions. Accordingly, we sought to examine the variation in impact of a health systems strengthening intervention and understand factors that might explain the variation in impact across primary health care units. Methodology/Principal Findings: We conducted a mixed methods positive deviance study of 20 Primary Health Care Units (PHCUs) in rural Ethiopia. Using longitudinal data from the Ethiopia Millennium Rural Initiative (EMRI), we identified PHCUs with consistently higher performance (n = 2), most improved performance (n = 3), or consistently lower performance (n = 2) in the provision of antenatal care, HIV testing in antenatal care, and skilled birth attendance rates. Using data from site visits and in-depth interviews (n = 51), we applied the constant comparative method of qualitative data analysis to identify key themes that distinguished PHCUs with different performance trajectories. Key themes that distinguished PHCUs were 1) managerial problem solving capacity, 2) relationship with the woreda (district) health office, and 3) community engagement.
