    Oscillatons revisited

    Get PDF
In this paper, we study some interesting properties of a spherically symmetric oscillating soliton star made of a real time-dependent scalar field which is called an oscillaton. The known final configuration of an oscillaton consists of a stationary stage in which the scalar field and the metric coefficients oscillate in time if the scalar potential is quadratic. The differential equations that arise in the simplest approximation, that of coherent scalar oscillations, are presented for a quadratic scalar potential. This allows us to take a closer look at the interesting properties of these oscillating objects. The leading terms of the solutions considering a quartic and a cosh scalar potentials are worked in the so called stationary limit procedure. This procedure reveals the form in which oscillatons and boson stars may be related and useful information about oscillatons is obtained from the known results of boson stars. Oscillatons could compete with boson stars as interesting astrophysical objects, since they would be predicted by scalar field dark matter models.Comment: 10 pages REVTeX, 10 eps figures. The extinction of top predators, such as mammalian carnivores can lead to dramatic changes in foodweb structure and ecosystem dynamics. Since all native Malagasy terrestrial mammalian carnivores are endemic, their extinction implies a significant loss of biodiversity in Madagascar. Here we review the literature on Madagascar’s mammalian carnivores, aiming to determine which species are most likely to become extinct in the near future in view of the factors threatening their survival. We scored each factor according to its impact on the species. According to our results, the giant–striped mongoose, Galidictis grandidieri, is the most likely species to next become extinct. This is no surprise because this species is considered one of the rarest carnivores in the world, inhabiting only a small, threatened forest ecosystem. Our results emphasize the need for robust data about each species to help and support decision–makers implement conservation measures.Tendencias de la extinción de carnívoros en Madagascar La extinción de los depredadores apicales, como los mamíferos carnívoros, puede conllevar cambios drásticos en la estructura de la red alimentaria y la dinámica de los ecosistemas. New insight into breast cancer cells involving drug combinations for dopamine and serotonin receptors

    Get PDF
The breast cancer therapies available are insufficient, especially since first-line treatments, such as paclitaxel, result in drug resistance and their toxicity often limits their concentration. Strategies like drug repurposing are beneficial, and novel treatments can emerge by repurposing drugs that interfere with the dopamine and serotonin receptors, and thus influence tumor growth. In this study, the MTT assay was used to test the efficacy of such repurposed drugs commonly used for neurodegenerative disorders that act on the dopamine and serotonin receptors to reduce the MCF7 cell’s viability, either by their single use or in combination with the reference drug paclitaxel. Furthermore, the expression of vimentin and E-cadherin was assayed by immunofluorescence. The dopamine receptor-altering drugs benztropine and thioridazine resulted in the strongest reduction of cell viability when combined with paclitaxel, which may be connected to the alteration of E-cadherin rather than vimentin expression. More studies are needed to understand the mechanism of action of the combinations tested and the efficacious role of dopamine and serotonin. This work was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT, Portugal) and FEDER (Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional) funds through the COMPETE 2020 Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation (POCI), Portugal, in the framework of the project IF/00092/2014/CP1255/CT0004. Quantum-state synthesis of multi-mode bosonic fields: Preparation of arbitrary states of 2-D vibrational motion of trapped ions

    Get PDF
We present a universal algorithm for an efficient deterministic preparation of an arbitrary two--mode bosonic state. In particular, we discuss in detail preparation of entangled states of a two-dimensional vibrational motion of a trapped ion via a sequence of laser stimulated Raman transitions. Our formalism can be generalized for multi-mode bosonic fields. We examine stability of our algorithm with respect to a technical noise.Comment: 8 pages, revtex, including 2 ps-figures, section about physical implementation added, references updated, submitted to Phys. Nymphal development of the predator Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) fed with a susceptible (UFV 16) or an insect resistant soybean genotype (IAC 17) and with larvae of the prey Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) reared on these genotypes, was evaluated. Survival and duration of each instar and of total nymphal stage, besides weight of nymphs at the beginning of each instar and of adults of P. nigrispinus soon after emergence, were also evaluated. Nymphal survival of this predator was similar with both genotypes (64.41% for the UFV 16 and 72.88% for the IAC 17). Duration of second and fourth instars for nymphs that originated females, of fourth instar for those that originated males, of the nymphal period for males (20.21 and 17.94 days) and females (19.76 and 18.19 days) was longer on the IAC 17 than on the UFV 16. Weight of third instar nymphs (3.12 mg and 2.42 mg) for those that originated males and of fifth instar (26.20 mg and 23.86 mg) for those that originated females weight after emergence (65.76 mg and 58.68 mg) was lower with the IAC 17 than with the UFV 16. Sex ratio of P. nigrispinus was not affected by the resistant soybean IAC 17

MEASUREMENT OF THE REGRESSION RATE IN A HYBRID ROCKET MOTOR BY ACQUIRING THE HELMHOLTZ FREQUENCY IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER

    Get PDF
Low thrust values obtained with a hybrid rocket motor (HRM) are a consequence of the difficulty in quickly mixing the fuel and oxidizer, which is characterized by a low regression rate of the fuel grain. Therefore, the measurement of this parameter is of great importance in studies that aim at solutions for this deficiency in HRM. Several studies calculate a reliable value of the average regression rate over time by measuring the total mass of fuel before and after each burn. A method to measure instantaneous regression rate is by acquiring the Helmholtz resonance frequency in the combustion chamber. This work uses a piezoelectric pressure transducer to obtain the Helmholtz frequency mode of the combustion chamber in a laboratory scale test bench with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and gaseous oxygen, and is based on the principle that this frequency is inversely proportional to the square-root of the chamber volume. With the chamber volume variation, the port diameter of the grain variation is obtained. In conclusion, the calculated variation of port diameter agreed well with the correlation for average regression rate, determined from mass loss during operation

Phenomemology of a Realistic Accelerating Universe Using Tracker Fields

We present a realistic scenario of tracking of scalar fields with varying equation of state. The astrophysical constraints on the evolution of scalar fields in the physical universe are discussed. The nucleosynthesis and the galaxy formation constraints have been used to put limits on Ωϕ\Omega_\phi and estimate ϵ\epsilon during cosmic evolution. Interpolation techniques have been applied to estimate ϵ≃0.772\epsilon\simeq0.772 at the present epoch. The epoch of transition from matter to quintessence dominated era and consequent onset of acceleration in cosmic expansion is calculated and taking the lower limit Ωn0=0.2\Omega_n^0 = 0.2 as estimated from SNeIaSN_e I_a data, it is shown that the supernova observations beyond redshift z=1z=1 would reveal deceleration in cosmic expansion.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, late

[EN] We study extendibility of diagonal multilinear operators from l(p) to l(p) spaces. We determine the values of and for which every diagonal -linear operator is extendible, and those for which the only extendible ones are integral. We address the same question for multilinear forms on l(p).D. Carando, V. Dimant and R. Villafane were partially supported by CONICET PIP 0624 and UBACyT 20020100100746. P.
