    Epistemic Vigilance

    Get PDF
Humans massively depend on communication with others, but this leaves them open to the risk of being accidentally or intentionally misinformed. To ensure that, despite this risk, communication remains advantageous, humans have, we claim, a suite of cognitive mechanisms for epistemic vigilance. Here we outline this claim and consider some of the ways in which epistemic vigilance works in mental and social life by surveying issues, research and theories in different domains of philosophy, linguistics, cognitive psychology and the social sciences

BIOGENIC AMINE CONTENT AND CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL FEATURES OF ITALIAN FORMAGGIO DI FOSSA

    Get PDF
Formaggio di Fossa is an Italian traditional cheese of the Montefeltro area (Emilia Romagna and Marche regions) characterized by a particular step of ripening that is carried out into pits (infossamento) borne in the sandstone. Since the XIV century, the inhabitants were used to set food, especially cereals and cheese, into pits to preserve them during winter and to protect them from invaders. The aim of the present work is to study physical and chemical features of this product with particular reference to the presence of the most important biogenic amines ( -Phenylethylamine, putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, tyramine, spermine and spermidine), compared with a control cheese fully ripened in factory. Formaggio di Fossa showed higher values of Aw, pH, humidity, proteins, pH 4,6-soluble nitrogen (NCN) and water soluble nitrogen (NPN) and much lower amounts of fat. Much higher amounts of total biogenic amines were detected in Formaggio di Fossa than in control cheese, where their concentration was very low. Cadaverine, putrescine and tyramine were the most concentrated biogenic amines. Nevertheless, thyramine was present at levels suggested as compatible with GMPs. Histamine was detected at low amounts, far from potentially toxic levels

Nucleation and growth of dendritic islands during platinum oxidation-reduction cycling

Platinum is the model catalyst in fuel cells because of its high activity toward oxygen reduction and hydrogen oxidation. However, its applicability is limited due to the degradation of the catalyst under operating conditions. This degradation process has been extensively studied by repeatedly oxidizing and reducing the electrode, which leads to the roughening of the surface due to the nucleation and growth of platinum nano-islands. Although the general picture of this surface roughening is well known, the atomic details concerning the nucleation and early growth of the islands are still under debate. In this work, we use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to calculate formation energies and diffusion barriers of an adatom, in both the unoxidized and the oxidized state, with the aim to provide further insight into the nucleation phenomena. Moreover, we analyze from STM images obtained experimentally the shape of the nano-islands during the first stages of growth. Our results show not only that the islands form during the reduction of the surface, but also that they grow with a dendritic island shape, similarly to the platinum islands formed in vacuum by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE).Catalysis and Surface Chemistr

Contrasting Transient Photocurrent Characteristics for Thin Films of Vacuum-Doped “Grey” TiO2 and “Grey” Nb2O5

Photo-catalytic performance for oxide films, here for inkjet-printed TiO2 (ca. 1 ÎŒm thickness on FTO) and for spray-pyrolysis-coated Nb2O5 (ca. 1 ÎŒm thickness on FTO), is affected by oxygen vacancies that form during vacuum-heat treatment at 550 °C. The effects of the oxygen vacancies are associated with formation of Ti(III) and Nb(IV) sites, respectively, and therefore optically visible as “grey” coloration. Photo-electrochemical light-on-off transient experiments are performed in the limit of thin film photoanodes, where front and back illumination result in the same photo-current responses (i.e. with negligible effects from internal light absorption gradients). It is shown that generally the magnitude of photo-currents correlates linearly with light intensity, which is indicative of dominant “photo-capacitive” behaviour. At an applied voltage of 0.4 V vs. SCE (in the plateau region of the photo-current responses) the potential and also the pH (going from 1.0 M KOH to 0.1 M HClO4 in the presence of methanol quencher) have no significant effect on photo-currents; that is, surface chemical/kinetic effects appear to be unimportant and interfacial hole transfer may be rate limiting. Under these conditions (and based on a simplistic mechanistic model) changes in photo-currents introduced by oxygen vacancy doping (detrimental for TiO2 and beneficial for Nb2O5) are assigned primarily to changes in electron mobility

Enhancing activity in a nanostructured BiVO4 photoanode with a coating of microporous Al2O3

Nanostructured semiconductor photoanodes play an important role in solar fuel generation, and the design of the semiconductor − aqueous electrolyte interface can be crucial in enhancing the energy conversion efficiency. We have investigated the effects on photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution for monoclinic nanostructured BiVO4 films uncoated and coated with microporous sol-gel Al2O3 “over-layers”. Variation of the thickness of the Al2O3 coating (formed by surface sol-gel deposition and annealing at 435 °C) led to a reduction of pseudo-capacitance and allowed optimization of the quantum efficiency. Exploration of the photocurrent enhancement as a function of applied potential reveals two distinct potential domains/mechanisms: (i) a low bias region enhancement effect (assigned to a lowering of the rate of external recombination of electrons with oxygen) and (ii) a high bias region of enhancement (assigned to higher charge carrier mobility due to less trapping in surface states).</p
