Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 29-30).This research investigates the copolymerization of divinylbenzene and 4- vinylpyridine into organic thin films that exhibit conformal, stable, and uniform surface properties. Thin films were grown using initiated chemical vapor deposition, a variant of hot-wire deposition using a chemical initiator. Readily variable monomer flow into the active stage of the reactor allows for directly tunable copolymer composition. This tunability extends onto the control of material surface properties of a substrate that is coated with these organic thin films. The conditions of iCVD allow a variety of delicate substrates to be coated and for the full retention of pendant functional groups. This leads to their application to many industries including water desalination membranes, microfluidics, photolithography, sensors, among many others. The focus of this paper is on the facilitated control of surface modification using iCVD techniques and some of its future applications are also discussed.by Ernesto Martinez.S.B

    Comparative measurement of Rayleigh scattering in single-mode optical fibers based on an OTDR technique

    A new technique for comparing the Rayleigh scattering coefficients of single-mode step index fibers is described and its theoretical limitations are discussed. The validity of the technique is proven using telecommunications-grade fibers. Of particular interest is the variation of scatter found with increasing core index. In addition, the influence of small ( <0.1 percent) quantities of rare-earth dopant ions on the fiber scatter losses is analyzed for the first time

    Linkage mapping reveals sex-dimorphic map distances in a passerine bird

    Linkage maps are lacking for many highly influential model organisms in evolutionary research, including all passerine birds. Consequently, their full potential as research models is severely hampered. Here, we provide a partial linkage map and give novel estimates of sex-specific recombination rates in a passerine bird, the great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus). Linkage analysis of genotypic data at 51 autosomal microsatellites and seven markers on the Z-chromosome (one of the sex chromosomes) from an extended pedigree resulted in 12 linkage groups with 2–8 loci. A striking feature of the map was the pronounced sex-dimorphism: males had a substantially lower recombination rate than females, which resulted in a suppressed autosomal map in males (sum of linkage groups: 110.2cM) compared to females (237.2cM; female/male map ratio: 2.15). The sex-specific recombination rates will facilitate the building of a denser linkage map and cast light on hypotheses about sex-specific recombination rates

    Kinetic energy oscillations in annular regions of ultracold neutral plasmas

    A study of ion equilibration in annular regions of ultracold strontium plasmas is reported. Plasmas are formed by photoionizing laser-cooled atoms with a pulsed dye laser. The experimental probe is spatially-resolved absorption spectroscopy using the 2S1/2-2P1/2 transition of the Sr+ ion. The kinetic energy of the ions is calculated from the Doppler broadening of the spectrum, and it displays clear oscillations during the first microsecond after plasma formation. The oscillations, which are a characteristic of strong coulomb coupling, are fit with a simple phenomenological model incorporating damping and density variation in the plasma

    Electron Spin Resonance Above Tc In Layered Manganites

    We have performed electron spin resonance (ESR) and dc magnetization measurements on single crystals of La2(1-x)Sr1+2xMn2O7 up to 800 K with special emphasis on the x = 0.4 composition. The ESR linewidth shows behavior similar to that observed in the three-dimensional perovskites and above ∼500 K can be described by a universal expression ΔHpp(T)=[C/Tχ(T)]ΔHpp (∞). The linewidth and the resonance field become anisotropic below ∼500 K. The anisotropy in the resonance field is proportional to the magnetization M, and we concluded that it is intrinsic to the system. We show that demagnetization effects can explain only part of the anisotropy. The remainder arises from short-range uniaxial terms in the Hamiltonian that are associated with the crystal field and Dzialozhinsky-Moriya interactions.     Idd9.2 and Idd9.3 Protective Alleles Function in CD4+ T-Cells and Nonlymphoid Cells to Prevent Expansion of Pathogenic Islet-Specific CD8+ T-Cells

    OBJECTIVE - Multiple type 1 diabetes susceptibility genes have now been identified in both humans and mice, yet mechanistic understanding of how they impact disease pathogenesis is still minimal. We have sought to dissect the cellular basis for how the highly protective mouse Idd9 region limits the expansion of autoreactive CD8 T-cells, a key cell type in destruction of the islets. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - We assess the endogenous CD8 T-cell repertoire for reactivity to the islet antigen glucose-6-phosphatase-related protein (IGRP). Through the use of adoptively transferred T-cells, bone marrow chimeras, and reconstituted severe combined immunodeficient mice, we identify the protective cell types involved. RESULTS - IGRP-specific CD8 T-cells are present at low frequency in the insulitic lesions of Idd9 mice and could not be recalled in the periphery by viral expansion. We show that Idd9 genes act extrinsically to the CD8 T-cell to prevent the massive expansion of pathogenic effectors near the time of disease onset that occurs in NOD mice. The subregions Idd9.2 and Idd9.3 mediated this effect. Interestingly, the Idd9.1 region, which provides significant protection from disease, did not prevent the expansion of autoreactive CD8 T-cells. Expression of Idd9 genes was required by both CD4 T-cells and a nonlymphoid cell to induce optimal tolerance. CONCLUSIONS - Idd9 protective alleles are associated with reduced expansion of IGRP-specific CD8 T-cells. Intrinsic expression of protective Idd9 alleles in CD4 T-cells and nonlymphoid cells is required to achieve an optimal level of tolerance. Protective alleles in the Idd9.2 congenic subregion are required for the maximal reduction of islet-specific CD8 T-cells

    Emerging entities and molecular subgroups in large B-cell lymphomas (LBCLs) were discussed during the 2022 European Association for Haematopathology/Society for Hematopathology workshop in Florence, Italy. This session focused on newly recognized diseases and their diagnostic challenges. High-grade/large B-cell lymphoma with 11q aberration (HG/LBCL-11q) is defined by chromosome 11q-gains and telomeric loss. FISH analysis is recommended for the diagnosis. HG/LBCL-11q can occur in the setting of immunodeficiency, including ataxia-telangiectasia, and predominates in children. The morphological spectrum of these cases is broader than previously thought with often Burkitt-like morphology and coarse apoptotic bodies. It has a Burkitt-like immunophenotype (CD10+, BCL6+, BCL2-) but MYC expression is weak or negative, lacks MYC rearrangement, and is in contrast to Burkitt lymphoma 50% of the cases express LMO2. LBCL with IRF4 rearrangement (LBCL-IRF4) occurs mainly in the pediatric population but also in adults. LBCL-IRF4 has an excellent prognosis, with distinguishing molecular findings. IRF4 rearrangements, although characteristic of this entity, are not specific and can be found in association with other chromosomal translocations in other large B-cell lymphomas. Other molecular subgroups discussed included primary bone diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PB-DLBCL), which has distinctive clinical presentation and molecular findings, and B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) with IGH::MYC translocation recently segregated from Burkitt lymphoma with TdT expression. This latter disorder has molecular features of precursor B-cells, often tetrasomy 1q and recurrent NRAS and KRAS mutations. In this report, novel findings, recommendations for diagnosis, open questions, and diagnostic challenges raised by the cases submitted to the workshop will be discussed
