A model for vortex formation in magnetic nanodots
We use Monte Carlo simulation to study the vortex nucleation on magnetic
nanodots at low temperature. In our simulations, we have considered a simple
microscopic two-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model with term to describe
the anisotropy due to the presence of the nanodot edge. We have considered the
thickness of the edge, which was not considered in previous works, introducing
a term that controls the energy associated to the edge. Our results clearly
show that the thickness of the edge has a considerable influence in the vortex
nucleation on magnetic nanodots. We have obtained the hysteresis curve for
several values of the surface anisotropy and skin depth parameter (). The
results are in excellent agreement with experimental data
Spin filtering in nanowire directional coupler
The spin transport characteristics of a nanowire directional electronic
coupler have been evaluated theoretically via a transfer matrix approach. The
application of a gate field in the region of mixing allows for control of spin
current through the different leads of the coupler via the Rashba spin-orbit
interaction. The combination of spin-orbit interaction and applied gate
voltages on different legs of the coupler give rise to a controllable
modulation of the spin polarization. Both structural factors and field strength
tuning lead to a rich phenomenology that could be exploited in spintronic
devices.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
How gender affects the buying-decision process among consumers of luxury goods
Over the decades, many studies focused on luxury brand consumption and explored the customer perception and motives for purchasing luxury brands. Nevertheless, the role of gender in this context has been neglected. Recently, some researchers have been studying the influence of gender on luxury purchases. However, the subject is not fully explored and the effect of some motivations are still lacking on the studies.
The present dissertation is based on previous researches about luxury values, consumer behaviour and gender behavioural differences. The study aimed to contribute to the analysis of whether men and women buy luxury for different reasons, from which the following research questions arise: Does gender have an effect on the purchase of luxury goods? And how does gender affect the buying-decision process among consumers of luxury goods?
In order to answer these questions, a documentary analysis was conducted, as well as a face-to-face questionnaire to Portuguese women and men that buy ready-to-wear and/or luxury accessories.
Results revealed that different motivations are attributed to each gender; in other words, women and men buy luxury products for different reasons. It was established that women have a higher purchase intention than men and respond more favourably to luxury brands promotional activity. Furthermore, men showed to be motivated by materialistic value, status value and conspicuous value, responding more positively to luxury brands loyalty programs than females. Nevertheless, gender did not show an effect on hedonic value, susceptibility to normative influence and uniqueness value.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
A Giant Hand Lipoma As a Rare Cause of Secondary Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - a Case Report
Introduction: Lipomas are a rare cause of compressive neuropathy and they lead to atypical clinical presentation that can mimic carpal tunnel syndrome.
Case presentation: The authors describe a rare presentation of a carpal tunnel syndrome recurrence after a hand giant lipoma, presenting with rapidly compression neuropathy of the median nerve, 6 months after de primary surgery.
Discussion: Lipomas are common benign soft tumours. Their occurrence in the hand remains rare and they rarely cause secondary entrapment neuropathies. Carpal tunnel syndrome is mostly idiopathic and bilateral. Local factors should be suspected when these neuropathies present with atypical symptomatology or even when they recur after primary conventional surgical release. Investigation should consider images studies as this correct preoperative assessment leads to successful diagnosis and treatment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Radio emission from satellite-Jupiter interactions (especially Ganymede)
Analyzing a database of 26 years of observations of Jupiter from the
Nan\c{c}ay Decameter Array, we study the occurrence of Io-independent emissions
as a function of the orbital phase of the other Galilean satellites and
Amalthea. We identify unambiguously the emissions induced by Ganymede and
characterize their intervals of occurrence in CML and Ganymede phase and
longitude. We also find hints of emissions induced by Europa and, surprisingly,
by Amalthea. The signature of Callisto-induced emissions is more tenuous.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, in "Planetary Radio Emissions VIII", G. Fischer,

Mkp3 is a negative feedback modulator of Fgf8 signaling in the mammalian isthmic organizer
The pivotal mechanisms that govern the correct patterning and regionalization of the distinct areas of the mammalian CNS are driven by key molecules that emanate from the so-called secondary organizers at neural plate and tube stages. FGF8 is the candidate morphogenetic molecule to pattern the mesencephalon and rhombencephalon in the isthmic organizer (IsO). Recognizable relevance has been given to the intracellular pathways by which Fgf8 is regulated and modulated. In chick limb bud development, a dual mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase-3 (Mkp3) plays a role as a negative feedback modulator of Fgf8 signaling. We have investigated the role of Mkp3 and its functional relationship with the Fgf8 signaling pathway in the mouse IsO using gene transfer microelectroporation assays and protein-soaked bead experiments. Here, we demonstrate that MKP3 has a negative feedback action on the MAPK/ERK-mediated FGF8 pathway in the mouse neuroepithelium. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc.
