This thesis consists of a chamber-staged composition for soprano, baritone, modified Pierrot ensemble (flute, clarinet, piano, violin, viola and cello), Colombian tiple, and fixed media, together with an analytical paper in which I discuss my compositional techniques and their historical antecedents. The composition is an interpretation of an acute schizophrenic episode of a young female patient that is committed to a mental health facility. It was inspired by the need to bring awareness about mental illness and the struggles that these patients experience every day. In this work, I explore the inclusion of a folkloric instrument, the Colombian tiple, within a classical chamber ensemble to expand the color and timbre of the sound world of the composition. In addition, I use different compositional techniques including set theory, unordered pitch collections, and choral-like polyphonic texture. The work is composed in a twenty-first century expressionistic style

Photochemistry of N-(selenoalkyl)-phthalimides. Formation of N, Se-heterocyclic systems

A variety of N-(selenomethyl)alkyl-phthalimides (alkyl = -(CH2)n-; n = 2-5, 1a, b, d, e) and N-(selenobenzyl)propyl phthalimide (1c) were synthesized and their photochemistry was studied at λ = 300 nm. Steady-state photolysis and laser time-resolved spectroscopy studies confirmed that these reactions proceeded by direct or acetone-sensitized excitation followed by intramolecular electron transfer (ET) between Se atom and the phthalimide moiety. Two main pathways are possible after ET: proton transfer to the ketyl radical anion from the CH3Se+ or the -CH2Se+- moieties, yielding the corresponding biradicals. Collapse of these biradicals yields cyclization products with the respective endo or exo selenium-containing heterocycles. Competition between both proton transfer processes depends on the chain length of the alkyl spacer between the phthalimide and Se groups as well as the size of the cycle being formed.Fil: Oksdath Mansilla, Gabriela. TM in PHEVs is crucial to ensure good components performance and durability in all possible climate scenarios. A drawback of accurate TM solutions is the higher electrical consumption due to the increasing number of low voltage (LV) actuators used in the cooling circuits. Hence, more complex control strategies are needed for minimizing components thermal stress and at the same time electrical consumption. In this context, NMPC arises as a powerful method for achieving multiple objectives in Multiple input- Multiple output systems. This paper proposes an NMPC for the TM of the High Voltage (HV) battery and the power electronics (PE) cooling circuit in a PHEV. It distinguishes itself from the previously NMPC reported methods in the automotive sector by the complexity of its controlled plant which is highly nonlinear and controlled by numerous variables. The implemented model of the plant, which is based on experimental data and multi- domain physical equations, has been validated using six different driving cycles logged in a real vehicle, obtaining a maximum error, in comparison with the real temperatures, of 2C. For one of the six cycles, an NMPC software-in-the loop (SIL) is presented, where the models inside the controller and for the controlled plant are the same. This simulation is compared to the finite-state machine-based strategy performed in the real vehicle. The results show that NMPC keeps the battery at healthier temperatures and in addition reduces the cooling electrical consumption by more than 5%. In terms of the objective function, an accumulated and weighted sum of the two goals, this improvement amounts 30%. Finally, the online SIL presented in this paper, suggests that the used optimizer is fast enough for a future implementation in the vehicle.Accepted versio

This article studies the influence of the German pedagogy in the teachers training reform of the Normal Schools promoted by the liberal governments at the end of the 19th century in Chile. The visits of Valentín Letelier Madariaga and José Abelardo Núñez to Germany convinced them about the superiority of Germanic methods and the need to provide the Chilean pedagogy with a scientific status, in the image and likeness of Western European and positivist culture. This documentary theoretical analysis aims to understand the dynamics of the German ideological and cultural presence in the Nation-State project, thought and dreamed, by the oligarchical leading groups of Chile based on the formation of female and male preceptors. The method was qualitative-descriptive with a historiographic design developed from the methodological triangulation between primary and secondary sources. The results of this work can stimulate the interest to study an unexplored field in the Chilean educational research: the vast German influence at the beginning of the installation of the Normal School in South-central Chile. Effect of agroecosystems on seroprevalence of St. Louis encephalitis and West Nile viruses in birds, La Pampa, Argentina, 2017–2019

    Get PDF
In Argentina, the La Pampa ecoregion has been almost completely transformed into agroecosystems. To evaluate the environmental (agricultural area, tree coverage, distance to the nearest water body and urban site) and biological (dove, cowbird, and sparrow abundance) effects on free-ranging bird exposure to St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) and West Nile virus (WNV), we used generalized linear mixed models. For 1,019 birds sampled during 2017–2019, neutralizing antibodies were found against SLEV in samples from 60 (5.8%) birds and against WNV for 21 (2.1%). The best variable for explaining SLEV seroprevalence was agricultural area, which had a positive effect; however, for WNV, no model was conclusive. Our results suggest that agroecosystems in the La Pampa ecoregion increase the exposure of avian hosts to SLEV, thus potentially increasing virus activity.Fil: Mansilla, Ana Paula.
