    The screening for depression and neurocognitive disorders in subjects newly diagnosed with HIV

    Background Inflammatory mediators may be relevant to explain the frequent comorbidity between depression, neurocognitive disorders and HIV. HIV induces activation of inflammatory mediators, mainly cytokines, that have been involved in the onset of depression and response to antidepressant treatment. Aim To identify recurring profiles of inflammatory biomarkers subtending depression, effectiveness of antidepressants and neurocognitive disorders among HIV-infected individuals. Methods All adult newly HIV-diagnosed out-patients attending HIV clinics in three towns of Northern Italy were screened, assessed for depression and studied immunologically and for neurocognitive disorders. Results Twenty-five patients have been enrolled so far: of these, 35% were positive to PHQ-9 screening, of which 6 were positive to the diagnostic assessment for depression. No neurocognitive disorders were found among the patients. As the project will develop, it is expected that frequency of depression, neurocognitive disorders and effective antidepressant treatment will be found to correlate to the profile of immune biomarkers. These findings might help to understand the etiology of depression in HIV, and specifically the role of inflammation and immunological changes

    Solubility and Transdermal Permeation Properties of a Dehydroepiandrosterone Cyclodextrin Complex from Hydrophilic and Lipophilic Vehicles

    The permeation ability of a compound is due principally to its concentration in the vehicle and to its aptitude to cross the stratum corneum of the skin. In this work ex-vivo permeation studies on newly developed formulations containing dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) were carried out to investigate vehicles that increase drug permeation through the skin. To enhance the solubility of DHEA, its complex form with alpha-cyclodextrin was used. In addition, the two forms (pure drug and complex form) were introduced in hydrophilic (water), lipophilic (paraffin oil), and microemulsion vehicles to evaluate the synergic effect of cyclodextrins and microemulsion vehicles on solubility and permeation. From the results, DHEA solubility is notably conditioned by the type of the vehicle used: the highest solubilities (both for pure and complex drug forms) were obtained with microemulsion, followed by paraffin oil and water. Moreover, in all the studied vehicles, the c-DHEA was more soluble than DHEA. Permeation profile fluxes showed very interesting differences. That reflect the varying drug forms (pure drug and complex form), vehicles used, and drug concentrations in the vehicles. The major flux was obtained in complex of DHEA with alpha-cyclodextrins in the microemulsion vehicle. Therefore, this type of vehicle and drug form would be very useful in the development of a topical formulation containing DHEA

    COM (International Council of Museum) defines a museum as a permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment. This statement seems to emphasize how a museum can be an education institution that embedded an educational project. Considering this (and reminding a progressive introduction of protocols and agreements between the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) and national, regional as well as provincial museums), in 2015 the Department of Humanities, Philosophy and Education of the University of Salerno (DISUFF) and the Virtual Archaeological Museum of Herculaneum (MAV) signed a scientific cooperation agreement oriented to develop and implement methods, tools and inclusive educational technologies. The first project, of this cooperation, consists in the realization of an Edugame, usable through the virtual reality Oculus Rift technology (one of the types of headmounted display present on the market) set inside the MAV 3D model of Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. The game is realized to be explorative and interactive, that link the Italian archeological museums systems and didactic necessity to improve the teaching-learning process for the users of the Edugame. In this regard, the use of head-mounted display technologies, can offer a good support to teaching-learning process due to virtual learning environments in non-formal contexts.L’ICOM (International Council of Museum) definisce un museo un’istituzione permanente al servizio della società e del suo sviluppo, aperto al pubblico che acquisisce, conserva, ricerca, comunica ed espone ai fini dello studio.     SWIPE: a bolometric polarimeter for the Large-Scale Polarization Explorer

    The balloon-borne LSPE mission is optimized to measure the linear polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background at large angular scales. The Short Wavelength Instrument for the Polarization Explorer (SWIPE) is composed of 3 arrays of multi-mode bolometers cooled at 0.3K, with optical components and filters cryogenically cooled below 4K to reduce the background on the detectors. Polarimetry is achieved by means of large rotating half-wave plates and wire-grid polarizers in front of the arrays. The polarization modulator is the first component of the optical chain, reducing significantly the effect of instrumental polarization. In SWIPE we trade angular resolution for sensitivity. The diameter of the entrance pupil of the refractive telescope is 45 cm, while the field optics is optimized to collect tens of modes for each detector, thus boosting the absorbed power. This approach results in a FWHM resolution of 1.8, 1.5, 1.2 degrees at 95, 145, 245 GHz respectively. The expected performance of the three channels is limited by photon noise, resulting in a final sensitivity around 0.1-0.2 uK per beam, for a 13 days survey covering 25% of the sky.Comment: In press.     Ginkgo biloba Responds to Herbivory by Activating Early Signaling and Direct Defenses

    Background: Ginkgo biloba (Ginkgoaceae) is one of the most ancient living seed plants and is regarded as a living fossil. G. biloba has a broad spectrum of resistance or tolerance to many pathogens and herbivores because of the presence of toxic leaf compounds. Little is known about early and late events occurring in G. biloba upon herbivory. The aim of this study was to assess whether herbivory by the generalist Spodoptera littoralis was able to induce early signaling and direct defense in G. biloba by evaluating early and late responses. Methodology/Principal Findings: Early and late responses in mechanically wounded leaves and in leaves damaged by S. littoralis included plasma transmembrane potential (Vm) variations, time-course changes in both cytosolic calcium concentration ([Ca 2+]cyt) and H2O2 production, the regulation of genes correlated to terpenoid and flavonoid biosynthesis, the induction of direct defense compounds, and the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The results show that G. biloba responded to hebivory with a significant Vm depolarization which was associated to significant increases in both [Ca 2+] cyt and H 2O 2. Several defense genes were regulated by herbivory, including those coding for ROS scavenging enzymes and the synthesis of terpenoids and flavonoids. Metabolomic analyses revealed the herbivore-induced production of several flavonoids and VOCs. Surprisingly, no significant induction by herbivory was found for two of the most characteristic G. biloba classes of bioactive compounds; ginkgolides and bilobalides

    The Large-Scale Polarization Explorer (LSPE)

    The LSPE is a balloon-borne mission aimed at measuring the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at large angular scales, and in particular to constrain the curl component of CMB polarization (B-modes) produced by tensor perturbations generated during cosmic inflation, in the very early universe. Its primary target is to improve the limit on the ratio of tensor to scalar perturbations amplitudes down to r = 0.03, at 99.7% confidence. A second target is to produce wide maps of foreground polarization generated in our Galaxy by synchrotron emission and interstellar dust emission. These will be important to map Galactic magnetic fields and to study the properties of ionized gas and of diffuse interstellar dust in our Galaxy. The mission is optimized for large angular scales, with coarse angular resolution (around 1.5 degrees FWHM), and wide sky coverage (25% of the sky). The payload will fly in a circumpolar long duration balloon mission during the polar night. Using the Earth as a giant solar shield, the instrument will spin in azimuth, observing a large fraction of the northern sky. The payload will host two instruments. An array of coherent polarimeters using cryogenic HEMT amplifiers will survey the sky at 43 and 90 GHz. An array of bolometric polarimeters, using large throughput multi-mode bolometers and rotating Half Wave Plates (HWP), will survey the same sky region in three bands at 95, 145 and 245 GHz. The wide frequency coverage will allow optimal control of the polarized foregrounds, with comparable angular resolution at all frequencies.Comment: In press.     Chrysolina herbacea Modulates Terpenoid Biosynthesis of Mentha aquatica L.

    Interactions between herbivorous insects and plants storing terpenoids are poorly understood. This study describes the ability of Chrysolina herbacea to use volatiles emitted by undamaged Mentha aquatica plants as attractants and the plant's response to herbivory, which involves the production of deterrent molecules. Emitted plant volatiles were analyzed by GC-MS. The insect's response to plant volatiles was tested by Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. Total RNA was extracted from control plants, mechanically damaged leaves, and leaves damaged by herbivores. The terpenoid quantitative gene expressions (qPCR) were then assayed. Upon herbivory, M. aquatica synthesizes and emits (+)-menthofuran, which acts as a deterrent to C. herbacea. Herbivory was found to up-regulate the expression of genes involved in terpenoid biosynthesis. The increased emission of (+)-menthofuran was correlated with the upregulation of (+)-menthofuran synthase
