Heavy metals in agricultural soils of the European Union with implications for food safety
Soil plays a central role in food safety as it determines the possible composition of food and feed at the root of the
food chain. However, the quality of soil resources as defined by their potential impact on human health by propagation
of harmful elements through the food chain has been poorly studied in Europe due to the lack of data of
adequate detail and reliability. The European Union's first harmonized topsoil sampling and coherent analytical
procedure produced trace element measurements fromapproximately 22,000 locations. This unique collection of
information enables a reliable overview of the concentration of heavy metals, also referred to as metal(loid)s including
As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn, Sb. Co, and Ni. In this article we propose that in some cases (e.g. Hg and Cd) the
high concentrations of soil heavy metal attributed to human activity can be detected at a regional level.While the
immense majority of European agricultural land can be considered adequately safe for food production, an estimated
6.24% or 137,000 km2 needs local assessment and eventual remediation action
On the Hyperbolicity of Lorenz Renormalization
We consider infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps with real critical exponent
and combinatorial type which is monotone and satisfies a long return
condition. For these combinatorial types we prove the existence of periodic
points of the renormalization operator, and that each map in the limit set of
renormalization has an associated unstable manifold. An unstable manifold
defines a family of Lorenz maps and we prove that each infinitely
renormalizable combinatorial type (satisfying the above conditions) has a
unique representative within such a family. We also prove that each infinitely
renormalizable map has no wandering intervals and that the closure of the
forward orbits of its critical values is a Cantor attractor of measure zero.Comment: 63 pages; 10 figure
Optimally shaped terahertz pulses for phase retrieval in a Rydberg atom data register
We employ Optimal Control Theory to discover an efficient information
retrieval algorithm that can be performed on a Rydberg atom data register using
a shaped terahertz pulse. The register is a Rydberg wave packet with one
consituent orbital phase-reversed from the others (the ``marked bit''). The
terahertz pulse that performs the decoding algorithm does so by by driving
electron probability density into the marked orbital. Its shape is calculated
by modifying the target of an optimal control problem so that it represents the
direct product of all correct solutions to the algorithm.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Sugawara-type constraints in hyperbolic coset models
In the conjectured correspondence between supergravity and geodesic models on
infinite-dimensional hyperbolic coset spaces, and E10/K(E10) in particular, the
constraints play a central role. We present a Sugawara-type construction in
terms of the E10 Noether charges that extends these constraints infinitely into
the hyperbolic algebra, in contrast to the truncated expressions obtained in
arXiv:0709.2691 that involved only finitely many generators. Our extended
constraints are associated to an infinite set of roots which are all imaginary,
and in fact fill the closed past light-cone of the Lorentzian root lattice. The
construction makes crucial use of the E10 Weyl group and of the fact that the
E10 model contains both D=11 supergravity and D=10 IIB supergravity. Our
extended constraints appear to unite in a remarkable manner the different
canonical constraints of these two theories. This construction may also shed
new light on the issue of `open constraint algebras' in traditional canonical

Measurement of the Longitudinal Spin Transfer to Lambda and Anti-Lambda Hyperons in Polarised Muon DIS
The longitudinal polarisation transfer from muons to lambda and anti-lambda
hyperons, D_LL, has been studied in deep inelastic scattering off an
unpolarised isoscalar target at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The spin
transfers to lambda and anti-lambda produced in the current fragmentation
region exhibit different behaviours as a function of x and xF . The measured x
and xF dependences of D^lambda_LL are compatible with zero, while
D^anti-lambda_LL tends to increase with xF, reaching values of 0.4 - 0.5. The
resulting average values are D^lambda_LL = -0.012 +- 0.047 +- 0.024 and
D^anti-lambda_LL = 0.249 +- 0.056 +- 0.049. These results are discussed in the
frame of recent model calculations.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Novel Bound States Treatment of the Two Dimensional Schrodinger Equation with Pseudocentral Plus Multiparameter Noncentral Potential
By converting the rectangular basis potential V(x,y) into the form as
V(r)+V(r, phi) described by the pseudo central plus noncentral potential,
particular solutions of the two dimensional Schrodinger equation in plane-polar
coordinates have been carried out through the analytic approaching technique of
the Nikiforov and Uvarov (NUT). Both the exact bound state energy spectra and
the corresponding bound state wavefunctions of the complete system are
determined explicitly and in closed forms. Our presented results are identical
to those of the previous works and they may also be useful for investigation
and analysis of structural characteristics in a variety of quantum systemsComment: Published, 16 page
Double spin asymmetry in exclusive rho^0 muoproduction at COMPASS
The longitudinal double spin asymmetry A_1^rho for exclusive leptoproduction
of rho^0 mesons, mu + N -> mu + N + rho, is studied using the COMPASS 2002 and
2003 data. The measured reaction is incoherent exclusive rho^0 production on
polarised deuterons. The Q^2 and x dependence of A_1^rho is presented in a wide
kinematical range: 3x10^-3 < Q^2 < 7 (GeV/c)^2 and 5x10^-5 < x < 0.05. The
presented results are the first measurements of A_1^rho at small Q2 (Q2 < 0.1
(GeV/c)^2) and small x (x < 3x10^-3). The asymmetry is in general compatible
