Quons Restricted to the Antisymmetric Subspace: Formalism and Applications
In this work we develop a formalism to treat quons restricted to the
antisymmetric part of their many-body space. A model in which a system of
identical quons interact through a pairing force is then solved within this
restriction and the differences between our solution and the usual fermionic
model solution are then presented and discussed in detail. Possible connections

Fluorescent antibody application in bioremediation procedures at the Savannah River Site
Direct Fluorescent Antibodies (DFA) and Most Probable Number (MPN) techniques are currently being employed at the Savannah River Site to monitor methanotrophic bacteria for the bioremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in field studies. Direct Fluorescent Antibodies were developed against various methanotrophic bacteria isolated from SRS as well as methanotrophic bacteria acquired from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC). DFA`s are anticipated to be more efficient for monitoring methanotroph activity than MPN`s because of shorter processing time, lower cost, and the direct nature of the assay. The DFA method is a direct technique, in that samples are processed immediately and can be enumerated within an hour. The MPN method is indirect, since samples must be cultured for 6-8 weeks before measuring methane consumption and carbon dioxide production. Indirect methods are not highly selective and have limited application. The greatest advantage of a faster assay, is that bioremediation procedures utilizing methanotrophic bacteria could be amended. These amendments would be based on environmental monitoring with results in real time (1 hour). The elimination of the MPN technique and the use of DFA`s will save significantly on both materials and labor. The data obtained from the DFA`s and MPN`s were statistically compared to each other and to total bacterial counts (AODC). The statistical analysis used was Analysis of Variants (ANOVA). Using this analysis, groundwater samples were found to be not significantly different; whereas soil were significantly different. These methods were employed on soil samples from the Southern Sector and ground water samples from the TCE-contaminated Sanitary Landfill at SRS. Group testing with Random Pools: Phase Transitions and Optimal Strategy
The problem of Group Testing is to identify defective items out of a set of
objects by means of pool queries of the form "Does the pool contain at least a
defective?". The aim is of course to perform detection with the fewest possible
queries, a problem which has relevant practical applications in different
fields including molecular biology and computer science. Here we study GT in
the probabilistic setting focusing on the regime of small defective probability
and large number of objects, and . We construct and
analyze one-stage algorithms for which we establish the occurrence of a
non-detection/detection phase transition resulting in a sharp threshold, , for the number of tests. By optimizing the pool design we construct
algorithms whose detection threshold follows the optimal scaling . Then we consider two-stages algorithms and analyze their
performance for different choices of the first stage pools. In particular, via
a proper random choice of the pools, we construct algorithms which attain the
optimal value (previously determined in Ref. [16]) for the mean number of tests
required for complete detection. We finally discuss the optimal pool design in

Measurement of the Gluino Mass via Cascade Decays for SPS 1a
If R-parity conserving supersymmetry is realised with masses below the TeV
scale, sparticles will be produced and decay in cascades at the LHC. In the
case of a neutral LSP, which will not be detected, decay chains cannot be fully
reconstructed, complicating the mass determination of the new particles. In
this paper we extend the method of obtaining masses from kinematical endpoints
to include a gluino at the head of a five-sparticle decay chain. This
represents a non-trivial extension of the corresponding method for the squark
decay chain. We calculate the endpoints of the new distributions and assess
their applicability by examining the theoretical distributions for a variety of
mass scenarios. The precision with which the gluino mass can be determined by
this method is investigated for the mSUGRA point SPS 1a. Finally we estimate
the improvement obtained from adding a Linear Collider measurement of the LSP

Hadronic Total Cross-sections Through Soft Gluon Summation in Impact Parameter Space
The Bloch-Nordsieck model for the parton distribution of hadrons in impact
parameter space, constructed using soft gluon summation, is investigated in
detail.
Its dependence upon the infrared structure of the strong coupling constant
is discussed, both for finite as well as singular, but integrable,
. The formalism is applied to the prediction of total proton-proton
and proton-antiproton cross-sections, where screening, due to soft gluon

Using stereochemistry to control mechanical properties in thiol–yne click-hydrogels
The stereochemistry of polymers has a profound impact on their mechanical properties. While this has been observed in thermoplastics, studies on how stereochemistry affects the bulk properties of swollen networks, such as hydrogels, are limited. Typically, changing the stiffness of a hydrogel is achieved at the cost of changing another parameter, that in turn affects the physical properties of the material and ultimately influences the cellular response. Herein, we report that by manipulating the stereochemistry of a double bond, formed in situ during gelation, materials with diverse mechanical properties but comparable physical properties can be obtained. Click-hydrogels that possess a high % trans content are stiffer than their high % cis analogues by almost a factor of 3. Human mesenchymal stem cells acted as a substrate stiffness cell reporter demonstrating the potential of these platforms to study mechanotransduction without the influence of other external factors
Total photoproduction cross-section at very high energy
In this paper we apply to photoproduction total cross-section a model we have
proposed for purely hadronic processes and which is based on QCD mini-jets and
soft gluon re-summation. We compare the predictions of our model with the HERA
data as well as with other models. For cosmic rays, our model predicts
substantially higher cross-sections at TeV energies than models based on
factorization but lower than models based on mini-jets alone, without soft
gluons. We discuss the origin of this difference.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in EPJC. Changes

Measurement of SUSY masses via cascade decays for SPS 1a
If R-parity conserving supersymmetry exists below the TeV-scale, new particles will be produced and decay in cascades at the LHC. The lightest supersymmetric particle will escape the detectors, thereby complicating the full reconstruction of the decay chains. In this paper we expand on existing methods for determining the masses of the particles in the cascade from endpoints of kinematical distributions. We perform scans in the mSUGRA parameter space to delimit the region where this method is applicable. From the examination of theoretical distributions for a wide selection of mass scenarios it is found that caution must be exerted when equating the theoretical endpoints with the experimentally obtainable ones. We provide analytic formulae for the masses in terms of the endpoints most readily available. Complications due to the composite nature of the endpoint expressions are discussed in relation to the detailed analysis of two points on the SPS 1a line. Finally we demonstrate how a Linear Collider measurement can improve dramatically on the precision of the masses obtained
Using social network sites in Higher Education: An experience in business studies
In the past 5 years the impact of Web 2.0 in new generations has been remarkably significant (Pew Research Center, 2010). This paper reports on an experience in the use of Social Network Sites (SNS) to support student involvement with the subject and to develop basic skills.
According to students’ opinion, the experience was deemed as positive. They considered that the experience contributed to a higher engagement with the subject and a deeper collaboration with other students and teaching staff. As a result, the majority of students would prefer the use of SNS as a first option if they had to enrol again in the subject.
Regarding the relationships between academic performance and use of the SNS, two different student profiles were identified based on usage patterns of the platform.
