Distribution of Eigenvalues for the Modular Group
The two-point correlation function of energy levels for free motion on the
modular domain, both with periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions, are
explicitly computed using a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood method. It
is shown that ion the limit of small separations they show an uncorrelated
behaviour and agree with the Poisson distribution but they have prominent
number-theoretical oscillations at larger scale. The results agree well with
numerical simulations.Comment: 72 pages, Latex, the fiogures mentioned in the text are not vital,

Tracing the evolution of nearby early-type galaxies in low density environments. The Ultraviolet view from GALEX
We detected recent star formation in nearby early-type galaxies located in
low density environments, with GALEX Ultraviolet (UV) imaging. Signatures of
star formation may be present in the nucleus and in outer rings/arm like
structures. Our study suggests that such star formation may be induced by
different triggering mechanisms, such as the inner secular evolution driven by
bars, and minor accretion phenomena. We investigate the nature of the (FUV-NUV)
color vs. Mg2 correlation, and suggest that it relates to "downsizing" in
galaxy formation.Comment: Conference "UV Universe 2010" S. Petersburg 31 May - 3 June, 2010

The formation of disc galaxies
We investigate the influence of the cooling epoch on the formation of
galaxies in a cold dark matter dominated universe. Isolated haloes, with
circular speeds typical of spiral galaxies, have been selected from a low
resolution numerical simulation for re-simulation at higher resolution with
dark matter and gas components. The initial conditions are evolved with two
smoothed particle hydrodynamics codes, TREESPH and GRAPESPH. In previous SPH
simulations, strong outward transport of angular momentum has led to the
formation of disc-like systems with much smaller angular momenta than observed
in real disc galaxies. Here we investigate whether this problem can be
circumvented if feedback processes prevent disc formation until late epochs.
The results of varying the cooling epoch for each of five different haloes are
analysed. When cooling and star formation occur at early times, stellar discs
are destroyed during merger events and we observe similar catastrophic
transport of angular momentum as seen in previous work. With cooling suppressed
until z=1, discs can form by the present day with angular momenta comparable to
those of observed disc galaxies. We conclude that feedback processes, which
prevent gas from collapsing until late epochs, are an essential ingredient in
disc galaxy formation.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, MNRAS format, 14 inlined and 2 external Postscript

Evaluation of different antibodies for immunostaining of Wolbachia in Brugia Malayi and other filarial parasites
High prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in China offers a unique setting to examine HBVs influence on the presentation of dengue fever. In 398 patients admitted for suspected dengue fever, 89% (353/398) were positive for dengue IgM antibodies. Among dengue-infected patients, 8% (29/353) had chronic HBV co-infection. Only dengue virus serotype 1 was identified by virus isolation and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assays. No case of dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome was diagnosed. In addition to routine clinical tests, interleukin 2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, interferon \u3b3 (IFN\u3b3), and tumor necrosis factor \u3b1 (TNF\u3b1) levels were measured in the sera of 95% (334/353) of dengue-infected subjects as well as controls. Surprisingly, HBV/dengue co-infected patients made less IL-6 (P < 0.05) and TNF\u3b1 (P < 0.05) than patients with only dengue infection. Similar levels of IL-4, IL-10, and IFN\u3b3 were found in both groups. Thus, HBV co-infection seems to alter the cytokine production pattern when patients contract dengue infection. Copyrigh
