    Clustering of psychiatric and somatic illnesses in the general population: multimorbidity and socioeconomic correlates

    The distribution of psychiatric disorders and of chronic medical illnesses was studied in a population-based sample to determine whether these conditions co-occur in the same individual. A representative sample (N = 1464) of adults living in households was assessed by the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, version 1.1, as part of the São Paulo Epidemiological Catchment Area Study. The association of sociodemographic variables and psychological symptoms regarding medical illness multimorbidity (8 lifetime somatic conditions) and psychiatric multimorbidity (15 lifetime psychiatric disorders) was determined by negative binomial regression. A total of 1785 chronic medical conditions and 1163 psychiatric conditions were detected in the population concentrated in 34.1 and 20% of respondents, respectively. Subjects reporting more psychiatric disorders had more medical illnesses. Characteristics such as age range (35-59 years, risk ratio (RR) = 1.3, and more than 60 years, RR = 1.7), being separated (RR = 1.2), being a student (protective effect, RR = 0.7), being of low educational level (RR = 1.2) and being psychologically distressed (RR = 1.1) were determinants of medical conditions. Age (35-59 years, RR = 1.2, and more than 60 years, RR = 0.5), being retired (RR = 2.5), and being psychologically distressed (females, RR = 1.5, and males, RR = 1.4) were determinants of psychiatric disorders. In conclusion, psychological distress and some sociodemographic features such as age, marital status, occupational status, educational level, and gender are associated with psychiatric and medical multimorbidity. The distribution of both types of morbidity suggests the need of integrating mental health into general clinical settings

    Electrogenerated hydrophilic carbon nanomaterials with tailored electrocatalytic activity

    This work investigates the influence of the type of buffer electrolyte used in the generation of Electrochemical Hydrophilic Carbon (EHC) on their physical-chemical properties and electrocatalytic activity. The EHC nanomaterials were prepared in three different biological buffers, phosphate, glycine and citrate buffers (EHC@phosphate, EHC@glycine, EHC@citrate) and their surface properties were fully characterized by AFM, XPS and Raman. The EHC nanomaterials drop cast onto a glassy carbon electrode were electrochemically characterized in [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- and [Ru(NH3)6]3+/2+ redox probes solutions, and their electrocatalytic activity was investigated towards hydrogen peroxide and oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in a phosphate buffer solution. It was found that the nature of buffer electrolyte strongly influences the surface chemical state of the EHC materials, disorder degree in the hexagonal sp2 carbon network and oxygen functional groups, affecting both the EHC electrocatalytic activity towards the ORR and H2O2 reduction reaction. The most catalytic material for the ORR was EHC@citrate, whereas EHC@glycine showed the highest oxygen conversion (n ≅ 2.7 to 3). Moreover, it was shown that the content of oxygen singly bonded to carbon correlates strongly with the number of electrons transferred. A very singular behaviour in the electrochemical reduction of hydrogen peroxide was observed on EHC@glycine, qualitatively interpreted as an autocatalytic reaction. In contrast, a blocking-like effect was depicted on EHC@phosphate. C.M. e I.G.V. disfrutaron de contratos FPI del IEO y del Ministerio de Economía y Competividad respectivamente.In this study the effect of inputs of organic matter and anthropogenic nitrogen at small spatial scales were investigated in the benthos of the Ria of A Coruña (NW Spain) using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. This ria is characteristically enriched in nutrients provided either by marine processes (as coastal upwelling) or by urban and agricultural waste. Stable isotope composition in trophic guilds of infaunal benthos revealed spatial differences related to their nutrient inputs. The main difference was the presence of an additional chemoautotrophic food web at the site with a large accumulation of organic matter. The enrichment in heavy nitrogen isotopes observed in most compartments suggests the influence of sewage-derived nitrogen, despite large inputs of marine nitrogen. Macroalgae (Fucus vesiculosus) resulted significantly enriched at the site influenced by estuarine waters. In contrast, no differences were found in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), thus suggesting a major dependence on marine nutrient sources for this species. However, the estimations of anthropogenic influence were largely dependent on assumptions required to model the different contributions of sources. The measurement of stable isotope signatures in various compartments revealed that, despite anthropogenic nutrients are readily incorporated into local food webs, a major influence of natural marine nutrient sources cannot be discarded.IEO, Plan nacional I+D+iPreprint2,277

    Analytical results for coupled map lattices with long-range interactions

    We obtain exact analytical results for lattices of maps with couplings that decay with distance as r−αr^{-\alpha}. We analyze the effect of the coupling range on the system dynamics through the Lyapunov spectrum. For lattices whose elements are piecewise linear maps, we get an algebraic expression for the Lyapunov spectrum. When the local dynamics is given by a nonlinear map, the Lyapunov spectrum for a completely synchronized state is analytically obtained. The critical lines characterizing the synchronization transition are determined from the expression for the largest transversal Lyapunov exponent. In particular, it is shown that in the thermodynamical limit, such transition is only possible for sufficiently long-range interactions, namely, for α≤alphac<d\alpha\le alpha_c<d, where dd is the lattice dimension.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, corrections included.     Colossal dielectric constants in transition-metal oxides

    Many transition-metal oxides show very large ("colossal") magnitudes of the dielectric constant and thus have immense potential for applications in modern microelectronics and for the development of new capacitance-based energy-storage devices. In the present work, we thoroughly discuss the mechanisms that can lead to colossal values of the dielectric constant, especially emphasising effects generated by external and internal interfaces, including electronic phase separation. In addition, we provide a detailed overview and discussion of the dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 and related systems, which is today's most investigated material with colossal dielectric constant. Also a variety of further transition-metal oxides with large dielectric constants are treated in detail, among them the system La2-xSrxNiO4 where electronic phase separation may play a role in the generation of a colossal dielectric constant.Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Eur.
