Gate recess engineering of pseudomorphic In0.30GaAs/GaAs HEMTs
The authors report how the performance of 0.12 ÎŒm GaAs pHEMTs is improved by controlling both the gate recess width, using selective dry etching, and the gate position in the source drain gap, using electron beam lithography. pHEMTs with a transconductance of 600 mS/mm, off state breakdown voltages >2 V, fÏ of 120 GHz, f max of 180 GHz and MAG of 13.5 dB at 60 GHz are reported
A comparison of compacting and caking behavior of carbonate-based washing powders
Two types of sodium carbonate powder produced by spray drying (SD) and dry neutralization (DN) were studied for their compaction properties using a uniaxial compression tester. A comparison was also made with Persil washing powder. Dry neutralized sodium carbonate showed greater resistance to compression and also produced a weaker compact when compressed to 100 kPa. Spray-dried sodium carbonate had an absence of fine particles but compacted easily. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that both types of powder were predominantly amorphous in nature. Moisture sorption measurements showed that both powders behaved in a similar way below 50% relative humidity (RH). However, dry neutralized sodium carbonate had a high moisture affinity above this RH. Particle structures were also examined using scanning electron microscopy, showing the heterogeneous interior of the spray-dried particles
Species richness patterns and functional traits of the bat fauna of arid southern Africa
The bat fauna of arid regions is still poorly studied mostly due to a lack of interest in areas with low species richness and a low number of threatened species. In this study, we reviewed the status of bat diversity in the arid parts of southern Africa, with the aim of setting up a baseline for future work. In particular, we described species richness patterns across four arid zones within the region (Namib Desert, Kalahari, Nama Karoo and Succulent Karoo), exploring abiotic gradients and local landscape structure. Additionally, we examined bat functional groups in this region and compared them with those of three other arid regions of the world to identify potential similarities and differences. The southern African arid region hosted 17 bat species, representing eight families, of which three are endemic to the region (Rhinolophus denti, Laephotis namibensis and Cistugo seabrae) and one is vagrant (the fruit bat Eidolon helvum). Species richness varied spatially within this arid region, being highest in the drier but topographically heterogeneous Namib Desert, probably as a result of roost availability. With regards to functional groups, the southern African arid region had few bat species adapted to foraging in open spaces, particularly when compared with the neighbouring savannahs. Drawing from this study, we suggest that: a) despite species richness decreasing with increasing aridity at the sub-continental scale, at a more local scale landscape
features (e.g. habitat structure) might be more relevant than aridity in determining bat species richness; and b) an unknown factor, possibly patterns of temperature limiting the availability of insects flying high above the ground, restricted the diversity of the open air foragers throughout the region. The Swinburne Intermediate Latitude Pulsar Survey
We have conducted a survey of intermediate Galactic latitudes using the
13-beam 21-cm multibeam receiver of the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. The survey
covered the region enclosed by 5 deg < |b| < 15 deg and -100 deg < l < 50 deg
with 4,702 processed pointings of 265 s each, for a total of 14.5 days of
integration time. Thirteen
2x96-channel filterbanks provided 288 MHz of bandwidth at a centre frequency
of 1374 MHz, one-bit sampled every 125 microsec and incurring ~DM/13.4 cm^-3 pc
samples of dispersion smearing. The system was sensitive to slow and most
millisecond pulsars in the region with flux densities greater than
approximately
0.3--1.1 mJy. Offline analysis on the 64-node Swinburne workstation cluster
resulted in the detection of 170 pulsars of which 69 were new discoveries.
Eight of the new pulsars, by virtue of their small spin periods and period
derivatives, may be recycled and have been reported elsewhere. The slow pulsars
discovered are typical of those already known in the volume searched, being of
intermediate to old age. Several pulsars experience pulse nulling and two
display very regular drifting sub-pulses. We discuss the new discoveries and
provide timing parameters for the 48 slow pulsars for which we have a

Kernel density classification and boosting: an L2 sub analysis
Kernel density estimation is a commonly used approach to classification. However, most of the theoretical results for kernel methods apply to estimation per se and not necessarily to classification. In this paper we show that when estimating the difference between two densities, the optimal smoothing parameters are increasing functions of the sample size of the complementary group, and we provide a small simluation study which examines the relative performance of kernel density methods when the final goal is classification. A relative newcomer to the classification portfolio is âboostingâ, and this paper proposes an algorithm for boosting kernel density classifiers. We note that boosting is closely linked to a previously proposed method of bias reduction in kernel density estimation and indicate how it will enjoy similar properties for classification. We show that boosting kernel classifiers reduces the bias whilst only slightly increasing the variance, with an overall reduction in error. Numerical examples and simulations are used to illustrate the findings, and we also suggest further areas of research
Hydrodynamic Synchronisation of Model Microswimmers
We define a model microswimmer with a variable cycle time, thus allowing the
possibility of phase locking driven by hydrodynamic interactions between
swimmers. We find that, for extensile or contractile swimmers, phase locking
does occur, with the relative phase of the two swimmers being, in general,
close to 0 or pi, depending on their relative position and orientation. We show
that, as expected on grounds of symmetry, self T-dual swimmers, which are
time-reversal covariant, do not phase-lock. We also discuss the phase behaviour
of a line of tethered swimmers, or pumps. These show oscillations in their
relative phases reminiscent of the metachronal waves of cilia.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure
An economic evaluation of schizophreniaâ1991
In 1991, the costs for schizophrenia, which has a lifetime prevalence of 1.5% among adult Americans, totaled 19 billion dollars, consisted of treatment-related expenditures such as those for inpatients and outpatients, as well as nontreatment-related expenditures such as those for the criminal justice system used by individuals with schizophrenia. The direct costs were fairly similar to those of other recent estimates of the cost of schizophrenia. Indirect costs, which were 24 billion) and homemakers (4.5 billion) or who had committed suicide (7 billion). Our method for calculating the indirect costs was slightly different than methods used in prior studies, which may account for our estimates being higher. The method for determining each expenditure is provided, and the implications of these staggering costs are discussed
Search for Possible Variation of the Fine Structure Constant
Determination of the fine structure constant alpha and search for its
possible variation are considered. We focus on a role of the fine structure
constant in modern physics and discuss precision tests of quantum
electrodynamics. Different methods of a search for possible variations of
fundamental constants are compared and those related to optical measurements

Dynamic and Chemical Aspects of the Mesospheric Na âWallâ Event on 9 October 1993 During the ALOHA Campaign
On October 9, 1993, observations were made from the National Center for Atmospheric Research Electra aircraft during a flight from Maui, Hawaii, toward a low-pressure system NW of the island, a flight of 7 hours in total. The leading edge (wall) of a bright airglow layer was observed 900 km NW of Maui at 0815 UT, which was traveling at 75 m sâ1 toward the SE, reaching Haleakala, Maui, about 3.25 hours later [see Swenson and Espy, 1995]. An intriguing feature associated with the event was the large increase in the mesospheric Na column density at the wall (âŒ180%). The enhancement was distributed over a broad region of altitude and was accompanied by significant perturbations in the Meinel (OH) and Na D line airglow emission intensities, as well as the temperature. This paper describes an investigation of the combined measurements from the aircraft and at Haleakala, including an analysis of the event using a gravity wave dynamic model. The modeled atmospheric variations associated with the leading edge of the âwallâ wave are then applied to models of the neutral and ionic chemistry of sodium in order to establish whether the enhancement was caused by the release of atomic Na from a local reservoir species, as opposed to redistribution by horizontal convection. The most likely explanation for the Na release was the neutralization of Na+ ions in a sporadic E layer that was first transported downward by a large amplitude (â10%) atmospheric gravity wave and then vertically mixed as the wave pushed the atmosphere into a super adiabatic state with associated convective instabilities and overturning
Characterization of the poplar pan-genome by genome-wide identification of structural variation
Many recent studies have emphasized the important role of structural variation (SV) in determining human genetic and phenotypic variation. In plants, studies aimed at elucidating the extent of SV are still in their infancy. Evidence has indicated a high presence and an active role of SV in driving plant genome evolution in different plant species.With the aim of characterizing the size and the composition of the poplar pan-genome, we performed a genome-wide analysis of structural variation in three intercrossable poplar species: Populus nigra, Populus deltoides, and Populus trichocarpa. We detected a total of 7,889 deletions and 10,586 insertions relative to the P. trichocarpa reference genome, covering respectively 33.2?Mb and 62.9?Mb of genomic sequence, and 3,230 genes affected by copy number variation (CNV). The majority of the detected variants are inter-specific in agreement with a recent origin following separation of species.Insertions and deletions (INDELs) were preferentially located in low-gene density regions of the poplar genome and were, for the majority, associated with the activity of transposable elements. Genes affected by SV showed lower-than-average expression levels and higher levels of dN/dS, suggesting that they are subject to relaxed selective pressure or correspond to pseudogenes.Functional annotation of genes affected by INDELs showed over-representation of categories associated with transposable elements activity, while genes affected by genic CNVs showed enrichment in categories related to resistance to stress and pathogens. This study provides a genome-wide catalogue of SV and the first insight on functional and structural properties of the poplar pan-genome
