    Kink band instability and propagation in layered structures

    A recent two-dimensional prototype model for the initiation of kink banding in compressed layered structures is extended to embrace the two propagation mechanisms of band broadening and band progression. As well as interlayer friction, overburden pressure and layer bending energy, the characteristics of transverse layer compressibility and foundation stiffness are now included. Experiments on constrained layers of paper show good agreement with the predictions of angle of orientation, kink band width and post-kink load-deflection response obtained from the model

    A hypothesis for the prediction of the circumferential wavenumber of buckling ofthe thin axially-compressed cylindrical shell is presented, based on the addition of a length effect to the classical (Koiter circle) critical load result. Checks against physical and numerical experiments, both by direct comparison of wavenumbers and via a scaling law, provide strong evidence that the hypothesis is correct

    There is a need to qualify additively manufactured parts that are used in highly regulated industries such as aerospace and nuclear power. This paper investigates the use of resonant ultrasound measurements to predict the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V manufactured by selective laser melting using a Renishaw AM 250. It is first demonstrated why R2 should not be used to assess the predictive capability of a model, before introducing a method for calculating predicted R2, which is then used to assess the models. It is found that a linear model with the resonant frequency peaks as predictors cannot be used to predict elongation at failure or reduction in area. However, linear models did demonstrate better predictive capabilities for Young’s modulus, yield strength, and especially ultimate tensile strength

    Premature browning in cooked ground beef after modifying myoglobin

    Some ground beef patties developed an internal, brown cooked color and looked well-done at temperatures as low as 131 ÌŠF, whereas normal patties were re d to pink. The premature brown color was not relate d to percent fat; patty compaction; animal source and maturity; pH (5.5 to 5.8); or concentrations of raw patty heme and nonhemeiron, myoglobin, and total pigment. Because oxidation-reduction potential and total reducing activities were higher (P<.05) and TBA numbers were lower (P<.05) in normal than prematurely brown patties, the brown color is apparently related to greater patty oxidation

    The significance of work allocation in the professional apprenticeship of solicitors

    It is a peculiarity of the solicitors’ profession that it has historically relied on methods of pre-qualification ‘training’ by way of apprenticeship and that an entirely respectable non-graduate route into the profession remains. In a political context, however, where the profession is called upon positively to demonstrate its standards of performance, the professional regulator seeks to attach a competence framework to the existing model; shifting the focus from how the trainee learns to what the trainee learns. This paper will explore the period of traineeship from the perspective of the trainees themselves, drawing on two small qualitative studies, focussing on the fundamental context factor of the allocation and structuring of their work. In the first study the context for this evaluation is the set of outcomes being tested by the professional regulator and in the second, the perceptions of qualified individuals looking back at their apprenticeship, The paper concludes that there remains work for the profession to do not only in fostering supportive and expansive apprenticeships, but in attending, however, supportive the surrounding environment, to the work being carried out by trainees and its relationship with the work carried out by newly qualified solicitors

    Reduced stomatal density in bread wheat leads to increased water-use efficiency

    Wheat is a staple crop, frequently cultivated in water-restricted environments. Improving crop water-use efficiency would be desirable if grain yield can be maintained. We investigated whether a decrease in wheat stomatal density via the manipulation of epidermal patterning factor (EPF) gene expression could improve water-use efficiency. Our results show that severe reductions in stomatal density in EPF-overexpressing wheat plants have a detrimental outcome on yields. However, wheat plants with a more moderate reduction in stomatal density (i.e. <50% reduction in stomatal density on leaves prior to tillering) had yields indistinguishable from controls, coupled with an increase in intrinsic water-use efficiency. Yields of these moderately reduced stomatal density plants were also comparable with those of control plants under conditions of drought and elevated CO2. Our data demonstrate that EPF-mediated control of wheat stomatal development follows that observed in other grasses, and we identify the potential of stomatal density as a tool for breeding wheat plants that are better able to withstand water-restricted environments without yield loss

    Anomalous Diffusion in Infinite Horizon Billiards

    We consider the long time dependence for the moments of displacement < |r|^q > of infinite horizon billiards, given a bounded initial distribution of particles. For a variety of billiard models we find ~ t^g(q) (up to factors of log t). The time exponent, g(q), is piecewise linear and equal to q/2 for q2. We discuss the lack of dependence of this result on the initial distribution of particles and resolve apparent discrepancies between this time dependence and a prior result. The lack of dependence on initial distribution follows from a remarkable scaling result that we obtain for the time evolution of the distribution function of the angle of a particle's velocity vector.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures Submitted to Physical Review
