    Berry effect in acoustical polarization transport in phononic crystals

    We derive the semiclassical equations of motion of a transverse acoustical wave packet propagating in a phononic crystal subject to slowly varying perturbations. The formalism gives rise to Berry effect terms in the equations of motion, manifested as the Rytov polarization rotation law and the polarization-dependent Hall effect. We show that the formalism is also applicable to the case of non-periodic inhomogeneous media, yielding explicit expressions for the Berry effect terms.Comment: To appear in JETP Let

    Linear stability of planar premixed flames: reactive Navier-Stokes equations with finite activation energy and arbitrary Lewis number

    A numerical shooting method for performing linear stability analyses of travelling waves is described and applied to the problem of freely propagating planar premixed flames. Previous linear stability analyses of premixed flames either employ high activation temperature asymptotics or have been performed numerically with finite activation temperature, but either for unit Lewis numbers (which ignores thermal-diffusive effects) or in the limit of small heat release (which ignores hydrodynamic effects). In this paper the full reactive Navier-Stokes equations are used with arbitrary values of the parameters (activation temperature, Lewis number, heat of reaction, Prandtl number), for which both thermal-diffusive and hydrodynamic effects on the instability, and their interactions, are taken into account. Comparisons are made with previous asymptotic and numerical results. For Lewis numbers very close to or above unity, for which hydrodynamic effects caused by thermal expansion are the dominant destablizing mechanism, it is shown that slowly varying flame analyses give qualitatively good but quantitatively poor predictions, and also that the stability is insensitive to the activation temperature. However, for Lewis numbers sufficiently below unity for which thermal-diffusive effects play a major role, the stability of the flame becomes very sensitive to the activation temperature. Indeed, unphysically high activation temperatures are required for the high activation temperature analysis to give quantitatively good predictions at such low Lewis numbers. It is also shown that state-insensitive viscosity has a small destabilizing effect on the cellular instability at low Lewis numbers

    I=3/2 KĎ€K \pi Scattering in the Nonrelativisitic Quark Potential Model

    We study I=3/2I=3/2 elastic KĎ€K\pi scattering to Born order using nonrelativistic quark wavefunctions in a constituent-exchange model. This channel is ideal for the study of nonresonant meson-meson scattering amplitudes since s-channel resonances do not contribute significantly. Standard quark model parameters yield good agreement with the measured S- and P-wave phase shifts and with PCAC calculations of the scattering length. The P-wave phase shift is especially interesting because it is nonzero solely due to SU(3)fSU(3)_f symmetry breaking effects, and is found to be in good agreement with experiment given conventional values for the strange and nonstrange constituent quark masses.Comment: 12 pages + 2 postscript figures, Revtex, MIT-CTP-210

    Long- and medium-range components of the nuclear force in quark-model based calculations

    Quark-model descriptions of the nucleon-nucleon interaction contain two main ingredients, a quark-exchange mechanism for the short-range repulsion and meson-exchanges for the medium- and long-range parts of the interaction. We point out the special role played by higher partial waves, and in particular the 1F3, as a very sensitive probe for the meson-exchange part employed in these interaction models. In particular, we show that the presently available models fail to provide a reasonable description of higher partial waves and indicate the reasons for this shortcoming.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure

    Flame front propagation IV: Random Noise and Pole-Dynamics in Unstable Front Propagation II

    The current paper is a corrected version of our previous paper arXiv:adap-org/9608001. Similarly to previous version we investigate the problem of flame propagation. This problem is studied as an example of unstable fronts that wrinkle on many scales. The analytic tool of pole expansion in the complex plane is employed to address the interaction of the unstable growth process with random initial conditions and perturbations. We argue that the effect of random noise is immense and that it can never be neglected in sufficiently large systems. We present simulations that lead to scaling laws for the velocity and acceleration of the front as a function of the system size and the level of noise, and analytic arguments that explain these results in terms of the noisy pole dynamics.This version corrects some very critical errors made in arXiv:adap-org/9608001 and makes more detailed description of excess number of poles in system, number of poles that appear in the system in unit of time, life time of pole.     Repulsive Core of NN S-Wave Scattering in a Quark Model with a Condensed Vacuum

    We work in a chiral invariant quark model, with a condensed vacuum, characterized by only one parameter. Bound state equations for the nucleon and Delta are solved in order to obtain an updated value of their radii and masses. Nucleon-nucleon S-Wave scattering is studied in the RGM framework both for isospin T=1 and T=0. The phase shifts are calculated and an equivalent local potential, which is consistent with K-N scattering, is derived. The result is a reasonable microscopic short range repulsion in the nucleon-nucleon interaction.Comment: 23 pages in latex revtex, 4 Postscript figure

    This paper presents a multilingual study on, per single post of microblog text, (a) how much can be said, (b) how much is written in terms of characters and bytes, and (c) how much is said in terms of information content in posts by different organizations in different languages. Focusing on three different languages (English, Chinese, and Japanese), this research analyses Weibo and Twitter accounts of major embassies and news agencies. We first establish our criterion for quantifying \how much can be said" in a digital text based on the openly available Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the translated subtitles from TED talks. These parallel corpora allow us to determine the number of characters and bits needed to represent the same content in different languages and character encodings. We then derive the amount of information that is actually contained in microblog posts authored by selected accounts on Weibo and Twitter. Our results confirm that languages with larger character sets such as Chinese and Japanese contain more information per character than English, but the actual information content contained within a microblog text varies depending on both the type of organization and the language of the post. We conclude with a discussion on the design implications of microblog text limits for different languages
