The Force of Gravity from a Lagrangian containing Inverse Powers of the Ricci Scalar
We determine the gravitational response to a diffuse source, in a locally de
Sitter background, of a class of theories which modify the Einstein-Hilbert
action by adding a term proportional to an inverse power of the Ricci scalar.
We find a linearly growing force which is not phenomenologically acceptable.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX 2 epsilon, no figures. Minor conceptual change
Clusters and cycles in the cosmic ray age distributions of meteorites
Statistically significant clusters in the cosmic ray exposure age distributions of some groups of iron and stone meteorites were observed, suggesting epochs of enhanced collision and breakups. Fourier analyses of the age distributions of chondrites reveal no significant periods, nor does the same analysis when applied to iron meteorite clusters
A high-speed digital signal processor for atmospheric radar, part 7.3A
The Model SP-320 device is a monolithic realization of a complex general purpose signal processor, incorporating such features as a 32-bit ALU, a 16-bit x 16-bit combinatorial multiplier, and a 16-bit barrel shifter. The SP-320 is designed to operate as a slave processor to a host general purpose computer in applications such as coherent integration of a radar return signal in multiple ranges, or dedicated FFT processing. Presently available is an I/O module conforming to the Intel Multichannel interface standard; other I/O modules will be designed to meet specific user requirements. The main processor board includes input and output FIFO (First In First Out) memories, both with depths of 4096 W, to permit asynchronous operation between the source of data and the host computer. This design permits burst data rates in excess of 5 MW/s
The accuracy of dynamic attitude propagation
Propagating attitude by integrating Euler's equation for rigid body motion has long been suggested for the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) but until now has not been implemented. Because of limited Sun visibility, propagation is necessary for yaw determination. With the deterioration of the gyros, dynamic propagation has become more attractive. Angular rates are derived from integrating Euler's equation with a stepsize of 1 second, using torques computed from telemetered control system data. The environmental torque model was quite basic. It included gravity gradient and unshadowed aerodynamic torques. Knowledge of control torques is critical to the accuracy of dynamic modeling. Due to their coarseness and sparsity, control actuator telemetry were smoothed before integration. The dynamic model was incorporated into existing ERBS attitude determination software. Modeled rates were then used for attitude propagation in the standard ERBS fine-attitude algorithm. In spite of the simplicity of the approach, the dynamically propagated attitude matched the attitude propagated with good gyros well for roll and yaw but diverged up to 3 degrees for pitch because of the very low resolution in pitch momentum wheel telemetry. When control anomalies significantly perturb the nominal attitude, the effect of telemetry granularity is reduced and the dynamically propagated attitudes are accurate on all three axes
Suspension mechanism and method
The invention is a suspension mechanism and method for suspending a flexible test structure T(sub s) subjected to large horizontal translational and vibratory motions. A zero-spring rate mechanism between air cushions A-1 and A-2 established by air bearings support an end of the test structure T(sub s) on a flat surface of a table permitting up to six degrees of freedom of motion of the suspended test structure T(sub s) substantially unconstrained by the suspension mechanism
Sensitivity of Helioseismic Measurements of Normal-mode Coupling to Flows and Sound-speed Perturbations
In this article, we derive and compute the sensitivity of measurements of
coupling between normal modes of oscillation in the Sun to underlying flows.
The theory is based on first-Born perturbation theory, and the analysis is
carried out using the formalism described by \citet{lavely92}. Albeit tedious,
we detail the derivation and compute the sensitivity of specific pairs of
coupled normal modes to anomalies in the interior. Indeed, these kernels are
critical for the accurate inference of convective flow amplitudes and
large-scale circulations in the solar interior. We resolve some inconsistencies
in the derivation of \citet{lavely92} and reformulate the fluid-continuity
condition. We also derive and compute sound-speed kernels, paving the way for
inverting for thermal anomalies alongside flows.Comment: 24 pages, 8 Figures; MNRA
Nonlocal Cosmology
We explore nonlocally modified models of gravity, inspired by quantum loop
corrections, as a mechanism for explaining current cosmic acceleration. These
theories enjoy two major advantages: they allow a delayed response to cosmic
events, here the transition from radiation to matter dominance, and they avoid
the usual level of fine tuning; instead, emulating Dirac's dictum, the required
large numbers come from the large time scales involved. Their solar system
effects are safely negligible, and they may even prove useful to the black hole
information problem.Comment: Expanded(!) version, to appear in Phys. Rev. Letter
Comment on "Canonical formalism for Lagrangians with nonlocality of finite extent"
We show by some counterexamples that Lagrangian sysytems with nonlocality of
finite extent are not necessarily unstable.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure Submitted to Phys. Rev.
