    Theory of Non-equilibrium Single Electron Dynamics in STM Imaging of Dangling Bonds on a Hydrogenated Silicon Surface

    During fabrication and scanning-tunneling-microscope (STM) imaging of dangling bonds (DBs) on a hydrogenated silicon surface, we consistently observed halo-like features around isolated DBs for specific imaging conditions. These surround individual or small groups of DBs, have abnormally sharp edges, and cannot be explained by conventional STM theory. Here we investigate the nature of these features by a comprehensive 3-dimensional model of elastic and inelastic charge transfer in the vicinity of a DB. Our essential finding is that non-equilibrium current through the localized electronic state of a DB determines the charging state of the DB. This localized charge distorts the electronic bands of the silicon sample, which in turn affects the STM current in that vicinity causing the halo effect. The influence of various imaging conditions and characteristics of the sample on STM images of DBs is also investigated.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figure

    Spin constrained orbital angular momentum control in high-harmonic generation

    The interplay between spin and orbital angular momentum in the up-conversion process allows us to control the macroscopic wave front of high harmonics by manipulating the microscopic polarizations of the driving field. We demonstrate control of orbital angular momentum in high harmonic generation from both solid and gas phase targets using the selection rules of spin angular momentum. The gas phase harmonics extend the control of angular momentum to extreme-ultraviolet wavelength. We also propose a bi-color scheme to produce spectrally separated extreme-ultraviolet radiation carrying orbital angular momentum

    Seismic retrofitting of RC frames with RC infilling

    The effectiveness of seismic retrofitting of multi-storey multi-bay RC-frame buildings, by converting selected bays into new walls through infilling with RC, was studied experimentally at the ELSA facility at JRC, Ispra, and the results are reported here. The full-scale model tested with the pseudo-dynamic method consisted of two parallel frames, linked through 0.15m slabs, having three bays each (8.5m long), with the central bay (2.5m) infilled with RC wall, and being four storeys tall (12m). The frames were designed and detailed for gravity loads only and are typical of similar frames built in Cyprus in the 1970's. Different connection details and reinforcement percentages for the two infilled frames were used in order to study the effects of these parameters. The results of the pseudo-dynamic and cyclic testing performed are presented and conclusions are drawn

    Engineering simulations of a super-complex cultural heritage building: Ica Cathedral in Peru

    The Cathedral of Ica, Peru, is one of the four prototype buildings involved in the ongoing Seismic Retrofitting Project, initiative of the Getty Conservation Institute. The complex historical building, which was heavily damaged by earthquakes in 2007 and 2009, can be divided into two substructures: an external masonry envelope and an internal timber frame built by a construction method known as quincha technique. This study makes use of the information available in literature and the results obtained from experimental campaigns performed by Pontificia Universidad Catlica del PerA and University of Minho. Nonlinear behaviour of masonry is simulated in the numerical models by considering specified compressive and tensile softening behaviour, while isotropic homogeneous and linear behaviour is adopted for modelling timber with appropriate assumptions on the connections. A single representative bay was initially studied by performing linear elastic analysis and verifying the compliance with the various criteria specified by the applicable normative to discuss the actual failure of Ica Cathedral. Afterwards, the structural behaviour of the two substructures composing the Cathedral is evaluated independently. Finally, the interaction of these two substructures is investigated by performing structural analysis on the entire structure of Ica Cathedral. Several structural analysis techniques, including eigenvalue, nonlinear static and dynamic analyses, are performed in order to: (1) evaluate the dominant mode shapes of the structure; (2) validate the numerical models by reproducing the structural damage observed in situ; (3) estimate the structural performance; and (4) identify the main failure mechanisms.This work was carried out with funding from the Getty Seismic Retrofitting Project under the auspices of the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI).     Citizen Science and Open Data: a model for Invasive Alien Species in Europe

    Invasive Alien Species (IAS) are a growing threat to Europe's biodiversity. The implementation of European Union Regulation on IAS can benefit from the involvement of the public in IAS recording and management through Citizen Science (CS) initiatives. Aiming to tackle issues related with the use of CS projects on IAS topics, a dedicated workshop titled “Citizen Science and Open Data: a model for Invasive Alien Species in Europe” was organized by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST Association). Fifty key stakeholders from all Europe, including two Members of the European Parliament, attended the workshop. With a clear focus on IAS, the workshop aimed at addressing the following issues: a) CS and policy, b) citizen engagement, and c) CS data management. Nine short presentations provided input on CS and IAS issues. Participants discussed specific topics in several round tables (“world café” style) and reported back their conclusions to the audience and full assembly moderated discussions. Overall, the workshop enabled the sharing of ideas, approaches and best practices regarding CS and IAS. Specific opportunities and pitfalls of using CS data in the whole policy cycle for IAS were recognized. Concerning the implementation of the IAS Regulation, CS data could complement official surveillance systems, and contribute to the early warning of the IAS of Union concern after appropriate validation by the Member States’ competent authorities. CS projects can additionally increase awareness and empower citizens. Attendees pointed out the importance for further public engagement in CS projects on IAS that demonstrate specific initiatives and approaches and analyze lessons learned from past experiences. In addition, the workshop noted that the data gathered from different CS projects on IAS are fragmented. It highlighted the need for using an open and accessible platform to upload data originating from CS sources or to mirror validated data into a single, easy-to-use web service, in line with the EU Open Science Strategic Priority. The workshop provided ten key recommendations of best practices for CS projects on IAS, addressed to researchers, policy makers and implementing authorities, indicating future research and policy directions and opportunities

    El Portal de Pórticos es un programa de cálculo por elementos finitos de una nueva clase: se trata de un Portal de Cálculo. Los Portales de Cálculo se caracterizan porque el usuario final no tiene acceso a ellos directamente sino a través de la Web. El Portal de Pórticos (Portal of Damage en Inglés), permite el análisis de estructuras aporticadas sometidas a solicitaciones extraordinarias. Se trata de un programa no lineal, dinámico y basado en la teoría del daño concentrado. Esta última puede ser definida como la Mecánica de la Fractura para estructuras aporticadas al combinar sus métodos con el concepto de rótula plástica y la Teoría de Estructuras. También, se describe una prueba experimental de un edificio de concreto armado de cuatro pisos, llevada a cabo en el European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA), sometido a un acelerograma artificial derivado del sismo de Friuli de 1976 mediante el método pseudodinámico (PsD). Finalmente, se describe la simulación numérica de este ensayo y posteriormente se comparan los resultados experimentales con los resultados de la simulación y de esta manera calibrar el programa Portál de Pórticos.JRC.G.5-European laboratory for structural assessmen

    Environmental growth of the faecal indicator Enterococcus moraviensis

    Soil passage through sand dunes has previously been shown to remove enteric micro-organisms very effectively, and hence is used for the production of drinking water. However, enterococci have occasionally been isolated from abstracted water (after dune passage) in one of the dune infiltration areas in the Netherlands. Enterococcus moraviensis was the most frequently isolated species. Until now, no faecal sources of this species have been reported and the potential for growth under certain environmental conditions was reported for other Enterococcus species. The aim of this study was to determine the ability of E. moraviensis to grow in habitats present in the dune passage process (dune vegetation, sediment from abstraction wells, biofilm developed using abstracted water and soil). Different concentrations of boiled and filtered (0.45 μ m) plant extracts obtained from dune vegetation supported growth (up to 6 log), with maximum concentrations after 4 to 6 days at 15 °C. Although E. moraviensis was shown to be able to attach to the biofilm, no growth was observed in biofilm or in sediment and soil.     Performance of industrial buildings during the Emilia earthquakes in Northern Italy and recommendations for their strengthening

    A series of earthquakes, the highest of magnitude M w 5.9, hit a portion of the Po Valley in Northern Italy, which was only recently classified as seismic. The paper reports the findings and the lessons learnt from a preliminary field survey which was conducted immediately after the second event. As a result of the economic attitude of the affected area, and possibly of the characteristics of the event, an unprecedented number of industrial precast buildings were affected, resulting into most of the casualties as well as in large economic losses. Whereas most of the damaged and collapsed buildings were designed for gravity loads only, evidence of poor behavior of some precast buildings designed according to seismic provisions were discovered. The paper provides a description of the performance of precast buildings, highlighting the deficiencies that led to their poor behavior as well as some preliminary recommendations
