On Iterated Twisted Tensor Products of Algebras
We introduce and study the definition, main properties and applications of
iterated twisted tensor products of algebras, motivated by the problem of
defining a suitable representative for the product of spaces in noncommutative
geometry. We find conditions for constructing an iterated product of three
factors, and prove that they are enough for building an iterated product of any
number of factors. As an example of the geometrical aspects of our
construction, we show how to construct differential forms and involutions on
iterated products starting from the corresponding structures on the factors,
and give some examples of algebras that can be described within our theory. We
prove a certain result (called ``invariance under twisting'') for a twisted
tensor product of two algebras, stating that the twisted tensor product does
not change when we apply certain kind of deformation. Under certain conditions,
this invariance can be iterated, containing as particular cases a number of
independent and previously unrelated results from Hopf algebra theory.Comment: 44 pages, 21 figures. More minor typos corrections, one more example

Solar Neutrinos Before and After KamLAND
We use the recently reported KamLAND measurements on oscillations of reactor
anti-neutrinos, together with the data of previously reported solar neutrino
experiments, to show that: (1) the total 8B neutrino flux emitted by the Sun is
1.00(1.0 \pm 0.06) of the standard solar model (BP00) predicted flux, (2) the
KamLAND measurements reduce the area of the globally allowed oscillation
regions that must be explored in model fitting by six orders of magnitude in
the Delta m^2-tan^2 theta plane, (3) LMA is now the unique oscillation solution
to a CL of 4.7sigma, (4) maximal mixing is disfavored at 3.1 sigma, (5)
active-sterile admixtures are constrained to sin^2 eta<0.13 at 1 sigma, (6) the
observed ^8B flux that is in the form of sterile neutrinos is
0.00^{+0.09}_{-0.00} (1 sigma), of the standard solar model (BP00) predicted
flux, and (7) non-standard solar models that were invented to completely avoid
solar neutrino oscillations are excluded by KamLAND plus solar at 7.9 sigma .
We also refine quantitative predictions for future 7Be and p-p solar neutrino
experiments.Comment: Published version, includes editorial improvement
Momentum and Coordinate Space Three-nucleon Potentials
In this paper we give explicit formulae in momentum and coordinate space for
the three-nucleon potentials due to and meson exchange, derived
from off-mass-shell meson-nucleon scattering amplitudes which are constrained
by the symmetries of QCD and by the experimental data. Those potentials have
already been applied to nuclear matter calculations. Here we display additional
terms which appear to be the most important for nuclear structure. The
potentials are decomposed in a way that separates the contributions of
different physical mechanisms involved in the meson-nucleon amplitudes. The
same type of decomposition is presented for the TM force: the
, the chiral symmetry breaking and the nucleon pair terms are isolated.Comment: LATEX, 33 pages, 3 figures (available as postscript files upon

Present and Future Bounds on Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions
We consider Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSI), described by
four-fermion operators of the form , where is an electron or first generation quark. We
assume these operators are generated at dimension , so the related
vertices involving charged leptons, obtained by an SU(2) transformation
, do not appear at tree level. These related
vertices necessarily arise at one loop, via exchange. We catalogue current
constraints from measurements in neutrino scattering, from
atmospheric neutrino observations, from LEP, and from bounds on the related
charged lepton operators. We estimate future bounds from comparing KamLAND and
solar neutrino data, and from measuring at the near detector
of a neutrino factory. Operators constructed with and should
not confuse the determination of oscillation parameters at a factory,
because the processes we consider are more sensitive than oscillations at the
far detector. For operators involving , we estimate similar
sensitivities at the near and far detector.Comment: Erratum added at the end of the documen

First-principles design and subsequent synthesis of a material to search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron
We describe the first-principles design and subsequent synthesis of a new
material with the specific functionalities required for a solid-state-based
search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron. We show
computationally that perovskite-structure europium barium titanate should
exhibit the required large and pressure-dependent ferroelectric polarization,
local magnetic moments, and absence of magnetic ordering even at liquid helium
temperature. Subsequent synthesis and characterization of
EuBaTiO ceramics confirm the predicted desirable
properties.Comment: Nature Materials, in pres
The Delta Scuti star 38 Eri from the ground and from space
We present and discuss the pulsational characteristics of the Delta Scuti star 38 Eri from photometric data obtained at two widely spaced epochs, partly from the ground (1998) and partly from space (MOST, 2011). We found 18 frequencies resolving the discrepancy among the previously published frequencies. Some of the frequencies appeared with different relative amplitudes at two epochs, however, we carried out investigation for amplitude variability for only the MOST data. Amplitude variability was found for one of three frequencies that satisfy the necessary frequency criteria for linear-combination or resonant-mode coupling. Checking the criteria of beating and resonant-mode coupling we excluded them as possible reason for amplitude variability. The two recently developed methods of rotational-splitting and sequence-search were applied to find regular spacings based only on frequencies. Doublets or incomplete multiplets with l = 1, 2 and 3 were found in the rotational splitting search. In the sequence search method we identified four sequences. The averaged spacing, probably a combination of the large separation and the rotational frequency, is 1.724 ± 0.092 d-1. Using the spacing and the scaling relation \bar{ρ }= [0.0394, 0.0554] gcm-3 was derived. The shift of the sequences proved to be the integer multiple of the rotational splitting spacing. Using the precise MOST frequencies and multi-colour photometry in a hybrid way, we identified four modes with l = 1, two modes with l = 2, two modes with l = 3, and two modes as l = 0 radial modes
Reversible Control of Magnetic Interactions by Electric Field in a Single Phase Material
Intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling describes the interaction between magnetic
and electric polarization through an inherent microscopic mechanism in a single
phase material. This phenomenon has the potential to control the magnetic state
of a material with an electric field, an enticing prospect for device
engineering. We demonstrate 'giant' magnetoelectric cross-field control in a
single phase rare earth titanate film. In bulk form, EuTiO3 is
antiferromagnetic. However, both anti and ferromagnetic interactions coexist
between different nearest neighbor europium ions. In thin epitaxial films,
strain can be used to alter the relative strength of the magnetic exchange
constants. Here, we not only show that moderate biaxial compression
precipitates local magnetic competition, but also demonstrate that the
application of an electric field at this strain state, switches the magnetic
ground state. Using first principles density functional theory, we resolve the
underlying microscopic mechanism resulting in the EuTiO3 G-type magnetic
structure and illustrate how it is responsible for the 'giant' cross-field
magnetoelectric effect
Migraine aura: retracting particle-like waves in weakly susceptible cortex
Cortical spreading depression (SD) has been suggested to underlie migraine aura. Despite a precise match in speed, the spatio-temporal patterns of SD and aura symptoms on the cortical surface ordinarily differ in aspects of size and shape. We show that this mismatch is reconciled by utilizing that both pattern types bifurcate from an instability point of generic reaction-diffusion models. To classify these spatio-temporal pattern we suggest a susceptibility scale having the value [sigma]=1 at the instability point. We predict that human cortex is only weakly susceptible to SD ([sigma]<1), and support this prediction by directly matching visual aura symptoms with anatomical landmarks using fMRI retinotopic mapping. We discuss the increased dynamical repertoire of cortical tissue close to [sigma]=1, in particular, the resulting implications on migraine pharmacology that is hitherto tested in the regime ([sigma]>>1), and potentially silent aura occurring below a second bifurcation point at [sigma]=0 on the susceptible scale
