    Mechanism of Enhancement in Electromagnetic Properties of MgB2 by Nano SiC Doping

    A comparative study of pure, SiC, and C doped MgB2 wires has revealed that the SiC doping allowed C substitution and MgB2 formation to take place simultaneously at low temperatures. C substitution enhances Hc2, while the defects, small grain size, and nanoinclusions induced by C incorporation and low-temperature processing are responsible for the improvement in Jc. The irreversibility field (Hirr) for the SiC doped sample reached the benchmarking value of 10 T at 20 K, exceeding that of NbTi at 4.2 K. This dual reaction model also enables us to predict desirable dopants for enhancing the performance properties of MgB2

    Smallest near-infrared fluorescent protein evolved from cyanobacteriochrome as versatile tag for spectral multiplexing

    From a single domain of cyanobacteriochrome (CBCR) we developed a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent protein (FP), termed miRFP670nano, with excitation at 645 nm and emission at 670 nm. This is the first CBCR-derived NIR FP evolved to efficiently bind endogenous biliverdin chromophore and brightly fluoresce in mammalian cells. miRFP670nano is a monomer with molecular weight of 17 kDa that is 2-fold smaller than bacterial phytochrome (BphP)-based NIR FPs and 1.6-fold smaller than GFP-like FPs. Crystal structure of the CBCR-based NIR FP with biliverdin reveals a molecular basis of its spectral and biochemical properties. Unlike BphP-derived NIR FPs, miRFP670nano is highly stable to denaturation and degradation and can be used as an internal protein tag. miRFP670nano is an effective FRET donor for red-shifted NIR FPs, enabling engineering NIR FRET biosensors spectrally compatible with GFP-like FPs and blue-green optogenetic tools. miRFP670nano unlocks a new source of diverse CBCR templates for NIR FPs.Peer reviewe

    Photodegradable by Yellow-Orange Light degFusionRed Optogenetic Module with Autocatalytically Formed Chromophore

    Optogenetic systems driven by yellow-orange light are required for the simultaneous regulation of several cellular processes. We have engineered the red fluorescent protein FusionRed into a 26 kDa monomeric optogenetic module, called degFusionRed. Unlike other fluorescent protein-based optogenetic domains, which exhibit light-induced self-inactivation by generating reactive oxygen species, degFusionRed undergoes proteasomal degradation upon illumination with 567 nm light. Similarly to the parent protein, degFusionRed has minimal absorbance at 450 nm and above 650 nm, making it spectrally compatible with blue and near-infrared-light-controlled optogenetic tools. The autocatalytically formed chromophore provides degFusionRed with an additional advantage over most optogenetic tools that require the binding of the exogenous chromophores, the amount of which varies in different cells. The degFusionRed efficiently performed in the engineered light-controlled transcription factor and in the targeted photodegradation of the protein of interest, demonstrating its versatility as the optogenetic module of choice for spectral multiplexed interrogation of various cellular processes

    Studying properties of chrome cast irons modified with titanium carbide

    The paper presents the results of studying hardness and wear resistance of chrome cast irons. In the study there were considered samples of cast iron of the ChN2H, ChN4H2 grades and ChN2H after treatment with titanium carbide. Titanium carbide in the amount of 1 % by weight with dispersity of 500 microns was introduced during casting into ChN2H cast iron. As a result of this treatment, the cast iron hardness and wear resistance become comparable to those of Nihard grade cast iron.     Magnetic field processing to enhance critical current densities of MgB2 superconductors

    Magnetic field of up to 12 T was applied during the sintering process of pure MgB2 and carbon nanotube (CNT) doped MgB2 wires. We have demonstrated that magnetic field processing results in grain refinement, homogeneity and significant enhancement in Jc(H) and Hirr. The Jc of pure MgB2 wire increased by up to a factor of 3 to 4 and CNT doped MgB2 by up to an order of magnitude in high field region respectively, compared to that of the non-field processed samples. Hirr for CNT doped sample reached 7.7 T at 20 K. Magnetic field processing reduces the resistivity in CNT doped MgB2, straightens the entangled CNT and improves the adherence between CNTs and MgB2 matrix. No crystalline alignment of MgB2 was observed. This method can be easily scalable for a continuous production and represents a new milestone in the development of MgB2 superconductors and related systems

    The Determinants of the 13-Year Risk of Incident Atrial Fibrillation in a Russian Population Cohort of Middle and Elderly Age

    Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia and a predictor of the complications of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs), particularly thromboembolic events and the progression of heart failure. We analyzed the determinants of the 13-year risk of incident AF in a Russian population cohort of middle and elderly age. A random population sample (n = 9360, age 45–69 years) was examined at baseline in 2003–2005 and reexamined in 2006–2008 and 2015–2017 in Novosibirsk (the HAPIEE study). Incident AF was being registered during the average follow-up of 13 years. The final analysis included 3871 participants free from baseline AF and cardiovascular disease (CVD) who participated in all three data collections. In a multivariable-adjusted Cox regression model, the 13-year risk of AF was positively associated with the male sex (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.20; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.26–3.87); age (HR = 1.10 per year; 95% CI 1.07–1.14); body mass index (BMI), (HR = 1.11 per unit; 95% CI 1.07–1.15); systolic blood pressure (SBP), (HR = 1.02 per 1 mmHg; 95% CI 1.01–1.02), and it was negatively associated with total cholesterol (TC), (HR = 0.79 per 1 mmol/L; 95% CI 0.66–0.94). In women, the risk of AF was more strongly associated with hypertension (HT) and was also negatively related to total cholesterol (TC) level (HR = 0.74 per 1 mmol/L; 95% CI 0.56–0.96). No independent association was found with mean alcohol intake per drinking occasion. These results in a Russian cohort have an implication for the prediction of AF and ASCVD complications in the general population

Spectrophotometrically significant totalcontent of hydroxycinnamic acids in leaves and flowers of tawny daylily (Hemerocallis fulva L.) has been determined.
