Familiarity affects social network structure and discovery of prey patch locations in foraging stickleback shoals
Numerous factors affect the fine-scale social structure of animal groups, but it is unclear how important such factors are in determining how individuals encounter resources. Familiarity affects shoal choice and structure in many social fishes. Here, we show that familiarity between shoal members of sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) affects both fine-scale social organization and the discovery of resources. Social network analysis revealed that sticklebacks remained closer to familiar than to unfamiliar individuals within the same shoal. Network-based diffusion analysis revealed that there was a strong untransmitted social effect on patch discovery, with individuals tending to discover a task sooner if a familiar individual from their group had previously done so than if an unfamiliar fish had done so. However, in contrast to the effect of familiarity, the frequency with which individuals had previously associated with one another had no effect upon the likelihood of prey patch discovery. This may have been due to the influence of fish on one another's movements; the effect of familiarity on discovery of an empty ‘control’ patch was as strong as for discovery of an actual prey patch. Smoothly Navigating between Functional Reactive Programming and Actors
We formally define an elegant multi-paradigm unification of Functional
Reactive Programming, Actor Systems, and Object-Oriented Programming. This
enables an intuitive form of declarative programming, harvesting the power of
concurrency while maintaining safety.
We use object and reference capabilities to highlight and tame imperative
features: reference capabilities track aliasing and mutability, and object
capabilities track I/O. Formally, our type system limits the scope, impact and
interactions of impure code.
- Scope: Expressions whose input is pure will behave deterministically.
- Impact: Data-races and synchronisation issues are avoided. The only way for
an actor to behave nondeterministically, is by mutating its state based on
message delivery order.
- Interactions: Signals provide a functional boundary between imperative and
functional code, preventing impure code from invalidating functional

Unravelling Active Galactic Nuclei
A complete flat-spectrum radio-loud sample of AGN includes a significant
fraction of Seyfert-like AGN including a NLS1. Analysis of their optical
spectra suggests that the reddest continuum colours are either associated with
AGN in nearby resolved galaxies, or distant quasars showing relatively narrow

Deterministic entanglement and tomography of ion spin qubits
We have implemented a universal quantum logic gate between qubits stored in
the spin state of a pair of trapped calcium 40 ions. An initial product state
was driven to a maximally entangled state deterministically, with 83% fidelity.
We present a general approach to quantum state tomography which achieves good
robustness to experimental noise and drift, and use it to measure the spin

Long-lived mesoscopic entanglement outside the Lamb-Dicke regime
We create entangled states of the spin and motion of a single Ca
ion in a linear ion trap. The motional part consists of coherent states of
large separation and long coherence time. The states are created by driving the
motion using counterpropagating laser beams. We theoretically study and
experimentally observe the behaviour outside the Lamb-Dicke regime, where the
trajectory in phase space is modified and the coherent states become squeezed.
We directly observe the modification of the return time of the trajectory, and
infer the squeezing. The mesoscopic entanglement is observed up to with coherence time 170 microseconds and mean phonon excitation

First-principles calculation of the intersublattice exchange interactions and Curie temperatures of full Heusler alloys Ni2MnX (X=Ga, In, Sn, Sb)
The interatomic exchange interactions and Curie temperatures in Ni-based full
Heusler alloys Ni2MnX with X=Ga, In, Sn and Sb are studied within the framework
of the density-functional theory. The calculation of the exchange parameters is
based on the frozen-magnon approach. Despite closeness of the experimental
Curie temperatures for all four systems their magnetism appeared to differ
strongly. This difference involves both the Mn-Mn and Mn-Ni exchange
interactions. The Curie temperatures, Tc, are calculated within the mean-field
approximation by solving a matrix equation for a multi-sublattice system. Good
agreement with experiment for all four systems is obtained. The role of
different exchange interactions in the formation of Tc of the systems is
