Composite ceramic membranes were prepared according to two routes: (i) vacuum impregnation of molten eutectic sodium-lithium carbonates (NLC) into porous ceria-20 mol% gadolinia (20GDC) solid electrolytes; (ii) electric field-assisted sintering of a 25 wt% NLC/75 wt% 20GDC mixture. Porous 20GDC ceramics were obtained by controlled thermal removal of 40 vol% KCl added as pore former. Electric field-assisted (flash) sintering was carried out monitoring thickness during application of 200 V cm−1 to the specimen positioned in a sample chamber inserted in a vertical dilatometer. The surfaces of the sintered membranes were observed in a scanning electron microscope. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were performed in the 5 Hz to 13 MHz frequency range in the 280–580°C range. Arrhenius plots showed the transition from oxide ion conduction (due to the solid electrolyte) to carbonate ion conduction (due to the molten NLC). Membranes flash sintered at 420°C in 2 min showed electrical conductivity similar to membranes conventionally sintered at 690°C for 2 h.publishe

Abstract In the paper, the potentialities offered by an advanced valve lift design are numerically analyzed. In particular, the study is carried out by a 1D approach and regards the characterization of a VVA strategy named " pre-lift" applied to a downsized turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The pre-lift consists of a small, almost constant lift of the intake valve during the exhaust stroke, so to increase the valves overlapping. The results show a benefit on the fuel economy and on the gas-dynamic noise at part load and a substantial increase in the delivered torque at full load, while preserving the fuel consumption

Ionic and Electronic Conductivity of Nanostructured, Samaria-Doped Ceria

The ionic and electronic conductivities of samaria doped ceria electrolytes, Ce_(0.85)Sm_(0.15)O_(1.925−δ), with nanometric grain size have been evaluated. Nanostructured bulk specimens were obtained using a combination of high specific-surface-area starting materials and suitable sintering profiles under conventional, pressureless conditions. Bulk specimens with relatively high density (≥92% of theoretical density) and low medium grain size (as small as 33 nm) were achieved. Electrical A.C. impedance spectra were recorded over wide temperature (150 to 650°C) and oxygen partial pressure ranges (0.21 to 10^(−31) atm). Under all measurement conditions the total conductivity decreased monotonically with decreasing grain size. In both the electrolytic and mixed conducting regimes this behavior is attributed to the high number density of high resistance grain boundaries. The results suggest a possible variation in effective grain boundary width with grain size, as well as a possible variation in specific grain boundary resistance with decreasing oxygen partial pressure. No evidence appears for either enhanced reducibility or enhanced electronic conductivity upon nanostructuring

INTRODUCTION: Many of the epidemiological studies on the consumption of legal and illegal psychoactive substances have included the evaluation of the influence of social context on the levels of prevalence of this consumption using indirect social indicators such as family income, and educational and housing levels in an attempt to identify individuals or groups in different social contexts. The present study investigates the distribution of consumpition of psychoactive substances according to social class in a sample of teenage pupils in Ribeirão Preto, SP, Southeastern Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A self-applicable questionnaire duly adapted and submitted to a reliability test was applied to a proportional sample of 1,025 teenagers enrolled in the 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th grades in public and private city schools. The questionnaires contained questions about the use of ten classes of psychoactive substances, demographic questions and validation information, as well as questions about the perception and intrinsic behavior related to drug consumption. The adaptation of a model that identifies 5 social class strata (business middle class, managerial middle class, lower middle class, proletariat and subproletariat) on the basis of indicators that situate the individuals within the social relations of production, was used. RESULTS: The 3 middle class strata were more often represented, whereas the proletariat and subproletariat were less frequently represented in this teenage pupil population than in the population in general. There was no difference in alcohol or tobacco consumption according to social class, although prevalence tended to be higher at the two extremes of the social ladder. In contrast, the consumption of illegal substances was higher in the middle class and lower in the proletariat. CONCLUSION: Although the consumption of legal substances did not differ among social classes, the higher consumption of illegal substances by the wealthier teenagers was probably due to the higher cost of these products as compared those of alcohol and tobacco.INTRODUÇÃO: Vários estudos epidemiológicos sobre o consumo de substâncias psicoativas têm incluído em suas análises a avaliação da influência do contexto social nos níveis de prevalência desse consumo.

CONCLUSÕES: As substâncias psicoativas, sejam lícitas ou ilícitas, são freqüentemente experimentadas na adolescência, tanto pelos meninos como pelas meninas, muitas vezes em idades bem precoces.INTRODUCTION: Concern over the consumption of psychoactive substances by teenagers has given rise to a great wordwide effort to produce information about this phenomenon. This study set out to investigate the prevalence of consumption of legal and illegal psychoactive substances, its distribution by age, sex and age at first experience of them, among teenage pupils in county, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Southeastern Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A self-applicable questionnaire duly adapted and submitted to a reliability test was applied to a proportional sample of 1,025 teenagers enrolled in 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grads at public and private city schools. The questionnaire contained questions about the use of ten classes of psychoactive substances, demographic questions and validation information, as well as questions about the perception and intrinsic behavior related to drug consumption. RESULTS: The sample of 88.9% had consumed alcoholic beverages sometime in their lives, 37.7% had used tobacco, 31.1% solvents, 10.5% medicines, 6.8% marihuana, 2.7% cocaine, 1.6% hallucinogens, and 0.3% of the sample had consumed some opiate substance. The rates of consumption increased with age for all substances; however, the use of tobacco and of illegal substances was less intense during the later years of adolescence. As to sex distribution, boys consumed more than girls, except for medicines, with girls consuming barbiturates, amphetamines and tranquilizers in proportions similar to or higher than those observed among boys. Age at first experience showed that access to psychoactive substances occurred at very early ages. CONCLUSIONS: Experimenting with psychoactive substances, whether legal or illegal, is a frequent phenomenon during adolescence, both among boys and girls, often at very early ages

Native grapevines are the quintessential ele- ments of Southern Italy winemaking, and genomic char- acterization plays a role of primary importance for preservation and sustainable use of these unexploited genetic resources. Among the various molecular techniques available, SSR and retrotransposons-based markers result to be the most valuable for cultivars and biotypes distinc- tiveness. A total of 62 accessions including 38 local grape cultivars were analyzed with 30 SSR, four REMAP and one IRAP markers to assess their genetic diversity and obtain a complete genomic profiling. The use of VrZAG79, VrZAG112, VVS2, VVMD25 and VVMD5 combined with retrotransposon-based markers proved to be the most dis- criminating and polymorphic markers for the rapid and unambiguous identification of minority grapevines from Campania region, which is considered one of the most appreciated Italian districts for wine production. Results revealed 58 SSR marker-specific alleles, 22 genotype- specific SSR alleles, and four REMAP and IRAP private bands. Cases of synonymy and homonymy were discov- ered. In conclusion, we provided evidences that the inte- grating SSR and retrotransposon-based markers is an effective strategy to assess the genetic diversity of autochthonous grapes, allowing their easy identification
