Language and cultural capital in school experience of Polish children in Scotland
This article addresses the complex relationship between migration and education in the context of recent intra-European labour mobility. It considers how this mobility impacts the education and life chances of migrant students attending schools in Scotland, UK. By examining the experiences of Polish migrant children and youth at schools in Scotland, the article engages with the issues of language, cultural capital transferability and social positioning. Drawing on qualitative data from 65 in-depth interviews with school children aged 5â17âyears, their parents and teachers, as well as observations in the contexts of school and home, the article points to a range of factors affecting the transition of migrant pupils to new schools and social environments
Paediatric refugees from Ukraine: guidance for health care providers
BACKGROUND: With the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Army in February 2022, refugees, the majority of whom are women and children, started fleeing the war to neighbouring countries. Even before the current escalation, the conflict in the eastern part of Ukraine has led to the internal displacement of more than 200,000 children, and many others have experienced attacks, e.g. on schools. This inevitably leads to limitations in health care delivery. During transit, overcrowding, poor shelter and vulnerability may further put refugees at increased risk for infectious diseases. This consensus document aims to provide information and guidance regarding health issues that paediatricians and general practitioners may face when caring for Ukrainian children. METHODS: Members of the Migrant Health Reference Group of Paediatrics Switzerland and the Paediatric Infectious Disease Group in Switzerland developed this recommendation between March and April 2022 in a modified Delphi process. RESULTS: A total of 50 recommendations were agreed on with a >/=80% consensus. These include the following topics: i) general aspects, including interpreter services, urgent health needs, personal history and general check-ups; ii) mental health, including how to search for signs of psychological distress without going into traumatic details; iii) vaccinations, including recommendations for evaluation and catch-up; iv) screening for tuberculosis, human immunodeficiency virus, and hepatitis B and C; and v) providing age-appropriate preventive and health service information. CONCLUSION: This document provides current evidence and guidance when caring for paediatric refugees from Ukraine. The recommendations focus on Switzerland but may well be used in other countries. These are based on current evidence and may need to be adapted to individual situations and once further evidence becomes available
Camp Lwandle: Rehabilitating a migrant labour hostel at the seaside
In southern African narratives of migrant labour, hostels and compounds are
represented as typical examples of colonial and apartheid planning. Visual and
spatial comparisons are consistently made between the regulatory power of hostels
and those of concentration camps. Several of these sites of violence and
repression are today being reconfigured as sites of conscience, their artefactual
presence on the landscape being constructed as places of remembrance. In this
trajectory, a space of seeming anonymity in Lwandle, some 40 km outside of
Cape Town, was identified by the newly established museum, at the beginning
of the twenty-first century, as a structure of significance. The migrant labour
compound in Lwandle, of which Hostel 33 is the last remnant, was designed by
planners and engineers and laid out as part of a labour camp for male migrant
workers in the 1950s. This article explores the ambitious project initiated in
2008, by the Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum (and funded largely by the US
Ambassadors Cultural Restoration Fund), to restore Hostel 33. Although Hostel
33 was not a very old structure, having been built in 1958/9, nor was it easily
considered to have conventional architectural significance, its material presence
in present-day Lwandle represents a reminder of the conditions of life in the
labour camp. The article traces the work entailed in the restoration process
through paying attention to both the built fabric and its materiality, and by giving
an account of the explorations into finding ways to restore the hostel to the
museum through making it into a site of significance. In place of the centrality
of the building as the object of restoration, the work shifted to considering how
the hostel could function most effectively as a stage and destination for the
Museumâs narrations of the past. Retaining and maintaining Hostel 33 was less
concerned with the fabric as an empirical fact of the past, than with its projection

Social cohesion through football: a quasi-experimental mixed methods design to evaluate a complex health promotion program
Social isolation and disengagement fragments local communities. Evidence indicates that refugee families are highly vulnerable to social isolation in their countries of resettlement. Research to identify approaches to best address this is needed. Football United is a program that aims to foster social inclusion and cohesion in areas with high refugee settlement in New South Wales, Australia, through skills and leadership development, mentoring, and the creation of links with local community and corporate leaders and organisations. The Social Cohesion through Football studyâs broad goal is to examine the implementation of a complex health promotion program, and to analyse the processes involved in program implementation. The study will consider program impact on individual health and wellbeing, social inclusion and cohesion, as well as analyse how the program by necessity interacts and adapts to context during implementation, a concept we refer to as plasticity. The proposed study will be the first prospective cohort impact study to our knowledge to assess the impact of a comprehensive integrated program using football as a vehicle for fostering social inclusion and cohesion in communities with high refugee settlement

The Society of Jesus made great propaganda efforts throughout the seventeenth century and chose the images and the play as a privileged means to communicate and persuade. Athanasius Kircher, a key figure of the seventeenth century, he decided to dominate the wild nature of sound through Phonurgia Nova, which includes a gallery of powerful symbolic images for Baroque aesthetics. The essay, through the grant of the images from the Library of the Department of Mathematics "Guido Castelnuovo" Sapienza University of Rome, aims to understand, through the pictures offered by Kircher, the sound phenomenon and the spectacle that this produces. In Phonurgia Nova a process of dramatization sound effects takes place, often through machines and "visions" applied to the theatrical reality, as experimental and astonishing environment beloved in baroque. Kircher illustrates the sound through explanatory figures, so to dominate the sound through the eyes. Sound is seen, admired and represented: its spectacle not only takes place through the implementation of sound machines or the "wonders" applied to the theater, but even through images, creating create a sense of wonder in in the erudite person of the seventeenth century
