    Health risk factors and health promoting behaviour among medical and non-medical students

    Students in tertiary level education are mostly young adults that are transiting from the teenage years to adulthood. Since there is less restriction as compared to their teenage years, university and college students might involve in risky behaviours that may affect their health, social and academic performance. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate and identify the differences of health risk factors and health promoting behaviour that have been practiced by students in Malaysia. A cross sectional study was conducted using closed-ended questionnaires distributed to university and college students via emails. The results showed that 77.0% students claimed they have no health problem. However 49.0% of the non-medical students did not know whether they have normal BMI. Among the medical students, 62.0% rarely do physical exercise even though most are seriously concern about their fat consumption (95.0%). Only 30.0% of the total students have awareness of wearing seat belt. For health promoting behaviour, 33.0% of female students have never perform breast self examination (BSE), while 65.0% of male students have never perform testicular self examination (TSE). These findings confirmed that there are differences in health risk factors and health promoting behaviour that have been practiced by the students

    The use of nutrition label on food purchasing decision among university students in Kuantan, Malaysia

    Nutrition label provides nutrition status of the pre-packaged foods and is very useful for people when making decision for healthy foods. However, there is a lack of awareness among Malaysians regarding the use of nutrition label when purchasing foods. Hence, a cross sectional study among tertiary students (IIUM) was conducted. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between gender, attitude and knowledge of the tertiary students with the use of nutrition labeling. Assessment s were done by distributing 25-item questionnaires composed of pair-wise, open-ended and 5-item Likert scale questions to the subjects. The prevalence of level of nutrition knowledge and attitudes were determined. Our analysis showed that 95 students(57.6%) were moderately making use of the nutrition label. There was no significant difference between gender and the use of nutrition label on food purchasing decision among these students. There was also no association between knowledge and the use of nutrition label on food purchasing decision among them. However, there was significant association between attitude and the use of nutrition label on food purchasing decision among the students(p= 0.001, r= 17.842). Our results show that attitude is the key factor in regards with the use of nutrition label while gender and knowledge has no effect on the use of nutrition label on food purchasin

    Anisotropic Confinement, Electronic Coupling and Strain Induced Effects Detected by Valence-Band Anisotropy in Self-Assembled Quantum Dots

    A method to determine the effects of the geometry and lateral ordering on the electronic properties of an array of one-dimensional self-assembled quantum dots is discussed. A model that takes into account the valence-band anisotropic effective masses and strain effects must be used to describe the behavior of the photoluminescence emission, proposed as a clean tool for the characterization of dot anisotropy and/or inter-dot coupling. Under special growth conditions, such as substrate temperature and Arsenic background, 1D chains of In0.4Ga0.6 As quantum dots were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction measurements directly evidence the strong strain anisotropy due to the formation of quantum dot chains, probed by polarization-resolved low-temperature photoluminescence. The results are in fair good agreement with the proposed model

    A systematic review of grandparents’ influence on grandchildren’s cancer risk factors

    Many lifestyle patterns are established when children are young. Research has focused on the potential role of parents as a risk factor for non communicable disease in children, but there is limited investigation of the role of other caregivers, such as grandparents. The aim of this review was to identify and synthesise evidence for any influence grandparents’ care practices may have on their grandchildren’s long term cancer risk factors. A systematic review was carried out with searches across four databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO) as well as searches of reference lists and citing articles, and Google Scholar. Search terms were based on six areas of risk that family care could potentially influence–weight, diet, physical activity, tobacco, alcohol and sun exposure. All study designs were included, as were studies that provided an indication of the interaction of grandparents with their grandchildren. Studies were excluded if grandparents were primary caregivers and if children had serious health conditions. Study quality was assessed using National Institute for Health and Care Excellence checklists. Grandparent impact was categorised as beneficial, adverse, mixed or as having no impact. Due to study heterogeneity a meta-analysis was not possible. Qualitative studies underwent a thematic synthesis of their results. Results from all included studies indicated that there was a sufficient evidence base for weight, diet, physical activity and tobacco studies to draw conclusions about grandparents’ influence. One study examined alcohol and no studies examined sun exposure. Evidence indicated that, overall, grandparents had an adverse impact on their grandchildren’s cancer risk factors. The theoretical work in the included studies was limited. Theoretically underpinned interventions designed to reduce these risk factors must consider grandparents’ role, as well as parents’, and be evaluated robustly to inform the evidence base further

    Synthesis of carboxylated derivatives of poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene) by azide–alkyne “click” chemistry

    The final publication is available at Springer via https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41428-018-0130-yThe synthesis of carboxylated derivatives of poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene) (isobutylene–isoprene rubber, IIR) with substitution levels ranging from 1 to 4 mol% and different spacer lengths was accomplished through azide–alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition. Azido-functionalized IIR was first prepared by reacting brominated IIR with sodium azide to full conversion in a 90:10 tetrahydrofuran/N,N-dimethylacetamide mixture. The click reaction of azido-functionalized IIR with acetylenic acids, which was carried out using the copper(I) bromide/N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system in tetrahydrofuran, yielded carboxylated IIRs. The products were characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy, and their molecular weight was determined by size exclusion chromatography analysis. Physical Review C, 100(4). doi:10.1103/PhysRevC.100.044324.The original publication is available at https://journals.aps.org/prc/A comprehensive systematic study is made for the collective β and γ bands in even-even isotopes with neutron numbers N = 88 to 92 and proton numbers Z = 62 (Sm) to 70 (Yb). Data, including excitation energies, B(E0) and B(E2) values, and branching ratios from previously published experiments are collated with new data presented for the first time in this study. The experimental data are compared to calculations using a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) based on the covariant density functional theory (CDFT). A realistic potential in the quadrupole shape parameters V (β,γ ) is determined from potential energy surfaces (PES) calculated using the CDFT. The parameters of the 5DCH are fixed and contained within the CDFT. Overall, a satisfactory agreement is found between the data and the calculations. In line with the energy staggering S(I) of the levels in the 2γ + bands, the potential energy surfaces of the CDFT calculations indicate γ -soft shapes in the N = 88 nuclides, which become γ rigid for N = 90 and N = 92. The nature of the 02 + bands changes with atomic number. In the isotopes of Sm to Dy, they can be understood as β vibrations, but in the Er and Yb isotopes the 02 + bands have wave functions with large components in a triaxial superdeformed minimum. In the vicinity of 152Sm, the present calculations predict a soft potential in the β direction but do not find two coexisting minima. This is reminiscent of 152Sm exhibiting an X(5) behavior. The model also predicts that the 03 + bands are of two-phonon nature, having an energy twice that of the 02 + band.
