Comparison of Power Dependence of Microwave Surface Resistance of Unpatterned and Patterned YBCO Thin Film

The effect of the patterning process on the nonlinearity of the microwave surface resistance RSR_S of YBCO thin films is investigated. With the use of a sapphire dielectric resonator and a stripline resonator, the microwave RSR_S of YBCO thin films was measured before and after the patterning process, as a function of temperature and the rf peak magnetic field in the film. The microwave loss was also modeled, assuming a Jrf2J_{rf}^2 dependence of ZS(Jrf)Z_S(J_{rf}) on current density JrfJ_{rf}. Experimental and modeled results show that the patterning has no observable effect on the microwave residual RSR_S or on the power dependence of RSR_S.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Trans. MT

L-Lactide and Ï”-caprolactone ring opening polymerization by binary catalysts systems that include bis-ligated magnesium complexes

A series of bis-ligated magnesium complexes supported by tridentate ketoiminates containing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups were prepared. The complexes were characterized with 1H, 13C, and 19F NMR, absorbance spectroscopy, and x-ray crystallography. The complexes were assessed for their ring opening polymerization activity with L-lactide (L-lac) and ϔ-caprolactone (eCL) in binary catalyst systems with 4-fluorophenol at 100 °C. The magnesium complexes supported by ketoiminates bearing electron-donating groups yielded greater percentage conversions from monomers to polymers than those containing electron-withdrawing groups for both L-lac and eCL. The magnesium complexes were more efficient at polymerizing L-lac than eCL, and di-block copolymers of PCL-PLA were produced by the sequential polymerization of eCL followed by L-lac

Genetics and Pathogenesis of Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is endemic in feral cat populations and cat colonies, frequently preceding outbreaks of fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). FCoV exhibits 2 biotypes: the pathogenic disease and a benign infection with feline enteric coronavirus (FECV). Uncertainty remains regarding whether genetically distinctive avirulent and virulent forms coexist or whether an avirulent form mutates in vivo, causing FIP. To resolve these alternative hypotheses, we isolated viral sequences from FCoV-infected clinically healthy and sick cats (8 FIP cases and 48 FECV-asymptomatic animals); 735 sequences from 4 gene segments were generated and subjected to phylogenetic analyses. Viral sequences from healthy cats were distinct from sick cats on the basis of genetic distances observed in the membrane and nonstructural protein 7b genes. These data demonstrate distinctive circulating virulent and avirulent strains in natural populations. In addition, 5 membrane protein amino acid residues with functional potential differentiated healthy cats from cats with FIP. These findings may have potential as diagnostic markers for virulent FIP-associated FCoV

    The Quark-Gluon-Plasma Liquid

The quark-gluon plasma close to the critical temperature is a strongly interacting system. Using strongly coupled, classical, non-relativistic plasmas as an analogy, we argue that the quark-gluon plasma is in the liquid phase. This allows to understand experimental observations in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions and to interpret lattice QCD results. It also supports the indications of the presence of a strongly coupled QGP in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, final version, to bepublished in J. Phys.

Mothers of Soldiers in Wartime: A National News Narrative

    Get PDF
National news media represent mothers of US combat soldiers in the Iraq War as archetypal good mothers, that is, mothers who continue their maternal work even after their children are deployed. However, not all mothers are depicted as the archetypal patriotic mother, i.e., a good mother who is also stoic and silent about the war and her child\u27s role in it. Mothers of soldiers are portrayed as good mothers who sometimes also voice their attitudes about the war effort. The maternal attitudes ranged from complete support for the war to opposition to the war but support for the soldiers. The findings suggest a picture of wartime motherhood that is more nuanced than the historical image of the patriotic mother suggests

Dislocation-Mediated Melting: The One-Component Plasma Limit

The melting parameter Γm\Gamma_m of a classical one-component plasma is estimated using a relation between melting temperature, density, shear modulus, and crystal coordination number that follows from our model of dislocation-mediated melting. We obtain Γm=172±35,\Gamma_m=172\pm 35, in good agreement with the results of numerous Monte-Carlo calculations.Comment: 8 pages, LaTe

Efficient and Fast Synthesis of Few-Layer Black Phosphorus via Microwave-Assisted Liquid-Phase Exfoliation

High‐quality, few‐layer black‐phosphorus (BP) flakes are prepared in a common organic solvent with very short processing times using microwave‐assisted liquid‐phase exfoliation. A comprehensive range of analysis, combined with density‐functional theory calculations, confirms that the product prepared using the microwave technique is few‐layer BP with small‐ and large‐area flakes. The suspended exfoliated BP sheets show excellent stability, while samples dispersed onto silicon from the suspensions exhibit low oxidation levels after several days in ambient conditions. This straightforward synthesis method is facile, efficient, and extremely fast, and does not involve use of any surfactant or ultrasonication steps and will facilitate future development of phosphorene research
