Influence of deformation rate and degree of compression on textural parameters of potato and apple tissues in texture profile analysis
The influence of the degree of compression, at deformation rates of 50, 250 and 500 mm min-1, on the textural parameters in the texture profile analysis (TPA) of cylindrical samples of potato and apple tissues was examined. The tests were performed at up to eight different deformation levels ranging from 10% to 80%. The values of all the parameters measured in the samples of both tissues were influenced more by the degree of compression than by the deformation rate. Degrees of compression greater than 40% and 20% caused the rupture of potato and apple specimens, respectively. Regression models were fitted to express the variation of cohesiveness and chewiness with deformation rate and degree of compression. In apple and potato tissues, the degree of compression had a quadratic effect on the cohesiveness while the effect of the deformation rate was only linear. Cohesiveness was the most appropriate textural parameter for detecting effects of deformation rate and degree of compression in TPA tests of potato and apple tissues. Recoverable instantaneous springiness offers a high potential to differentiate the structural natures of different tissues. © Springer-Verlag 2002.Peer Reviewe
Caveolin-1 Modulates Mechanotransduction Responses to Substrate Stiffness through Actin-Dependent Control of YAP
The transcriptional regulator YAP orchestrates many cellular functions, including tissue homeostasis, organ growth control, and tumorigenesis. Mechanical stimuli are a key input to YAP activity, but the mechanisms controlling this regulation remain largely uncharacterized. We show that CAV1 positively modulates the YAP mechanoresponse to substrate stiffness through actin-cytoskeleton-dependent and Hippo-kinase-independent mechanisms. RHO activity is necessary, but not sufficient, for CAV1-dependent mechanoregulation of YAP activity. Systematic quantitative interactomic studies and image-based small interfering RNA (siRNA) screens provide evidence that this actin-dependent regulation is determined by YAP interaction with the 14-3-3 protein YWHAH. Constitutive YAP activation rescued phenotypes associated with CAV1 loss, including defective extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. CAV1-mediated control of YAP activity was validated in vivo in a model of pancreatitis-driven acinar-to-ductal metaplasia. We propose that this CAV1-YAP mechanotransduction system controls a significant share of cell programs linked to these two pivotal regulators, with potentially broad physiological and pathological implications. Moreno-Vicente et al. report that CAV1, a key component of PM mechanosensing caveolae, mediates adaptation to ECM rigidity by modulating YAP activity through the control of actin dynamics and phosphorylation-dependent interaction of YAP with the 14-3-3-domain protein YWHAH. Cav1-dependent YAP regulation drives two pathophysiological processes: ECM remodeling and pancreatic ADM. © 2018 The Author

Over recent years, there has been a growth in the importance of working sustainability based on the SDGs. To identify which learning objective of each SDG corresponds to each learning outcome of the EDINSOST Sustainability Map, a correspondence matrix has been defined. The matrix contains the learning outcomes of the EDINSOST Sustainability Map in its rows, and the 17 SDGs in the columns. The cells of the matrix contain the learning objectives of the SDGs that correspond to each learning outcome of the EDINSOST Sustainability Map. This work in progress presents the first results of the process of mapping the SDGs into the EDINSOST Sustainability Map of Engineering Bachelor Degrees. Early results show that some of the 169 learning objectives are not applicable to Engineering Degrees. Likewise, we have seen that learning objectives have been defined more for policy makers than for engineers, and therefore adaptation is not an easy task. However, the work done has helped us to verify that the EDINSOST Sustainability Map can help in the introduction of the SDGs into the curriculum.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
A learning tool to develop sustainable projects
This paper presents a tool developed to help engineers to design and develop sustainable projects. The tool has been designed to introduce and evaluate the sustainability of engineering projects in general, but here we show its application to assess the final project of an engineering degree. This tool is a guide for students to introduce and estimate the sustainability of their projects, but it also helps teachers to assess them. The tool is based on the Socratic Methodology and consists of a matrix where each cell contains several questions that students must consider during the project development and which they must answer in their project report. A positive or negative mark is assigned to every cell, and the sum of all marks states the project sustainability. However, the result is not as simplistic as a final
number, but a descriptive sustainability analysis where questions are answered and every mark justified. A pilot test with some students has obtained good results, but the first Final Degree Project using this methodology will be read in July 2016.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
On balancedness and D-Completeness of the space of Semi-lipschitz functions
Let (X, d) be a quasi-metric space and (Y, q) be a quasi-normed
linear space. We show that the normed cone of semi-Lipschitz functions from
(X, d) to (Y, q) that vanish at a point x0 E X, is balanced. Moreover, it is complete
in the sense of D. Doitchinov whenever (Y, q) is a biBanach spac
y habilidades. El objetivo del presente artícu-
lo es revisar algunas cuestiones centrales
para la intervención psicoeducativa de los
niños con trastorno de espectro autista, las
modalidades de escolarización y las adapta-
ciones tanto curriculares como sociales. Se
proponen algunas mejoras para la puesta en
marcha efectiva de las diferentes medidas
educativas a adoptar.[Abstract] The social and school integration of chil-
dren with autistic spectrum disorders is a fait
accompli in recent years. However, its practi-
ce must consider a series of adaptations and
adjustments. These children show a variety of
heterogeneous limitations, what in the school
practice must be translated into an educative
performance that responds to their needs and
abilities. The goal of this article is to revise
some vital questions for the psychoeducative
intervention in children with autistic spectrum
disorders, for the different schooling systems
and for the curricular or social adaptations.
