Effectiveness of an attachment-focused manualized intervention for parents of teens at risk for aggressive behaviour: The Connect Program
Aggressive, violent and antisocial behaviour in children and adolescents is a growing concern across the globe. Targeting parent-teen relationships is critical in reducing problem behaviour. ‘Connect’ is a manualized ten-week program for parents or alternative caregivers of at-risk teens that focuses on the building blocks of secure attachment: parental sensitivity, cooperation, reflective capacity, and effective dyadic affect regulation. Through didactic and experiential activities, parents develop the competence necessary to identify, understand and respond to the needs of their teen in a manner that provides structure and safety while safeguarding the quality of the parent-teen relationship. In Study 1, twenty parents reported significant increases in perceived parenting satisfaction and efficacy and reductions in adolescents\u27 aggression, antisocial behaviour and other mental health problems following completion of Connect as compared to a waitlist control period. These effects were sustained and additional small effects were noted in decreases in conduct problems, depression and anxiety at a 12-month follow-up. The program was then transported to 17 communities serving 309 parents through standardized training and supervision of group leaders. Study 2 summarizes significant pre- to post-treatment reductions in teen externalizing and internalizing problems; enhanced social functioning; and improvements in affect regulation. Parents also reported significant increases in parenting satisfaction and perceived efficacy and reductions in caregiver burden
Irreversible flow of vortex matter: polycrystal and amorphous phases
We investigate the microscopic mechanisms giving rise to plastic depinning
and irreversible flow in vortex matter. The topology of the vortex array
crucially determines the flow response of this system. To illustrate this
claim, two limiting cases are considered: weak and strong pinning interactions.
In the first case disorder is strong enough to introduce plastic effects in the
vortex lattice. Diffraction patterns unveil polycrystalline lattice topology
with dislocations and grain boundaries determining the electromagnetic response
of the system. Filamentary flow is found to arise as a consequence of
dislocation dynamics. We analize the stability of vortex lattices against the
formation of grain boundaries, as well as the steady state dynamics for
currents approaching the depinning critical current from above, when vortex
motion is mainly localized at the grain boundaries. On the contrary, a
dislocation description proves no longer adequate in the second limiting case
examined. For strong pinning interactions, the vortex array appears completely
amorphous and no remnant of the Abrikosov lattice order is left. Here we obtain
the critical current as a function of impurity density, its scaling properties,
and characterize the steady state dynamics above depinning. The plastic
depinning observed in the amorphous phase is tightly connected with the
emergence of channel-like flow. Our results suggest the possibility of
establishing a clear distinction between two topologically disordered vortex
phases: the vortex polycrystal and the amorphous vortex matter.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figure
The relevance of the vertex bremsstrahlung photon detection in the electron-neutrino (antineutrino) electron scattering experiments at low energy
We discuss the size of the electron-antineutrino electron into
electron-antineutrino electron cross section reduction due to the rejection of
the events with a vertex bremsstrahlung photon above a certain energy in the
final state. In particular we analyze the effect in experiments designed to
detect the low energy electron-antineutrino and electron-neutrino from a
nuclear reactor and from the Sun. We find that such reduction has to be
considered in a relatively high statistic reactor experiment, while it is
negligible for pp and 7Be solar neutrino detection.Comment: Plain Latex plus six postscript figures not included in the tex
Shifting internal parent-child representations among caregivers of teens with serious behaviour problems: An attachment-based approach
Attachment theory provides a rich framework for the development of interventions for trauma. This study examined processes underlying treatment outcomes of an attachment-based program (Connect; Moretti, Braber, & Obsuth, 2009) for parents of teens with severe behavior problems. Caregivers completed the Parenting Representations Interview and the Child Behavior Checklist prior to and following treatment. Results confirmed significant reductions in teens\u27 problem behavior and changes in parental representations of the parent, teen, and parent–teen relationship. Shifts in parenting representation were significantly related to reductions in teen problem behavior, consistent with the view that changing attachment representations underlies therapeutic effects
Possibility to realize spin-orbit-induced correlated physics in iridium fluorides
Recent theoretical predictions of "unprecedented proximity" of the electronic
ground state of iridium fluorides to the SU(2) symmetric
limit, relevant for superconductivity in iridates, motivated us to investigate
their crystal and electronic structure. To this aim, we performed
high-resolution x-ray powder diffraction, Ir L-edge resonant inelastic
x-ray scattering, and quantum chemical calculations on Rb[IrF] and
other iridium fluorides. Our results are consistent with the Mott insulating
scenario predicted by Birol and Haule [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 096403 (2015)],
but we observe a sizable deviation of the state from the
SU(2) symmetric limit. Interactions beyond the first coordination shell of
iridium are negligible, hence the iridium fluorides do not show any magnetic
ordering down to at least 20 K. A larger spin-orbit coupling in iridium
fluorides compared to oxides is ascribed to a reduction of the degree of
covalency, with consequences on the possibility to realize spin-orbit-induced
strongly correlated physics in iridium fluorides
Exposure to maternal versus paternal partner violence, PTSD and aggression in adolescent girls and boys
Adolescents who witness interparental violence (IPV) are at increased risk for perpetrating aggressive acts. They are also at risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, we examined the relation between exposure to maternal vs. paternal physical IPV and adolescent girls\u27 and boys\u27 aggressive behavior toward mothers, fathers, friends, and romantic partners. We also assessed the influence of PTSD (as assessed by the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents-IV (DICA-IV)) on the relation between exposure to IPV and aggressive behavior. Participants were 63 girls and 49 boys, ages 13-18, consecutively admitted to a youth correctional facility or assessment facility designated to serve aggressive and delinquent youth. Structural equation modeling was used to estimate unique relations between exposure to maternal vs. paternal IPV and youth aggression in relationships. Girls who observed their mothers\u27 aggressive behavior toward partners were significantly more aggressive toward friends. Similarly, boys who witnessed their fathers\u27 aggression were significantly more aggressive toward friends. Adolescent girls and boys who observed aggression by mothers toward partners reported significantly higher levels of aggression toward their romantic partners. Approximately one third of our sample met PTSD criteria; the relation between exposure to parental IPV and aggression was stronger for individuals who met criteria for PTSD. The implications of understanding the relations between parents\u27 and their daughters\u27 and sons\u27 use of aggression are discussed within the context of providing support for families in breaking intergenerational patterns of violence and aggression
Pushing the limits, episode 2: K2 observations of extragalactic RR Lyrae stars in the dwarf galaxy Leo IV
We present the first observations of extragalactic pulsating stars in the K2
ecliptic survey of the Kepler space telescope. Variability of all three RR
Lyrae stars in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo IV were successfully detected,
at a brightness of Kp~21.5 mag, from data collected during Campaign 1. We
identified one modulated star and another likely Blazhko candidate with periods
of 29.8+-0.9 d and more than 80 d, respectively. EPIC 210282473 represents the
first star beyond the Magellanic Clouds for which the Blazhko period and
cycle-to-cycle variations in the modulation were unambiguously measured.The
photometric [Fe/H] indices of the stars agree with earlier results that Leo IV
is a very metal-poor galaxy. Two out of three stars blend with brighter
background galaxies in the K2 frames. We demonstrate that image subtraction can
be reliably used to extract photometry from faint confused sources that will be
crucial not only for the K2 mission but for future space photometric missions

Single muscle fiber proteomics reveals unexpected mitochondrial specialization
Mammalian skeletal muscles are composed of multinucleated cells termed slow or fast fibers according to their contractile and metabolic properties. Here, we developed a high-sensitivity workflow to characterize the proteome of single fibers. Analysis of segments of the same fiber by traditional and unbiased proteomics methods yielded the same subtype assignment. We discovered novel subtype-specific features, most prominently mitochondrial specialization of fiber types in substrate utilization. The fiber type-resolved proteomes can be applied to a variety of physiological and pathological conditions and illustrate the utility of single cell type analysis for dissecting proteomic heterogeneity
The BMW Deep X-ray Cluster Survey
We briefly describe the main features of the Brera Multi-Wavelet (BMW) survey
of serendipitous X-ray clusters, based on the still unexploited ROSAT-HRI
archival observations. Cluster candidates are selected from the general BMW
catalogue of 20,000 sources based exclusively on their X-ray extension.
Contrary to common wisdom, a clever selection of the HRI energy channels allows
us to significantly reduce the background noise, thus greatly improving the
ability to detect low surface-brightness sources as clusters. The resulting
sample of ~250 candidates shows a very good sky coverage down to a flux
\~3x10^-14 erg/s/cm^2 ([0.5-2.0] keV band), i.e comparable to existing
PSPC-based deep survey, with a particularly interesting area of ~100 sq.deg.
around fluxes ~10^-13 erg/s/cm^2, i.e. where highly-luminous, rare systems at
z~0.6-1 can be detected. At the same time, the superior angular resolution of
the instrument should avoid biases against intrinsically small systems, while
easing the identification process (e.g. by spotting blends and AGN
contaminants). While about 20% of the candidates are already identified with
groups/clusters at z<0.3 on the DSS2 images, we have started a deep CCD imaging
campaign to observe all sources associated to "blank fields". First results
from these observations reveal a distant (z>0.5) bonafide cluster counterpart

The massive star population of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC 4535
We analyzed the massive star population of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC 4535
using archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images in
filters F555W and F814W, equivalent to Johnson V and Kron-Cousins I. We
performed high precision point spread function fitting photometry of 24353
sources including 3762 candidate blue supergiants, 841 candidate yellow
supergiants and 370 candidate red supergiants. We estimated the ratio of blue
to red supergiants as a decreasing function of galactocentric radius. Using
Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics isochrones at solar
metallicity, we defined the luminosity function and estimated the star
formation history of the galaxy over the last 60 Myrs. We conducted a
variability search in the V and I filters using three variability indexes: the
median absolute deviation, the interquartile range and the inverse von-Neumann
ratio. This analysis yielded 120 new variable candidates with absolute
magnitudes ranging from M = 4 to 11 mag. We used the MESA
evolutionary tracks at solar metallicity, to classify the variables based on
their absolute magnitude and their position on the color-magnitude diagram.
Among the new candidate variable sources are eight candidate variable red
supergiants, three candidate variable yellow supergiants and one candidate
