Automatic plankton quantification using deep features
The study of marine plankton data is vital to monitor the health of the world’s oceans. In recent decades, automatic plankton recognition systems have proved useful to address the vast amount of data collected by specially engineered in situ digital imaging systems. At the beginning, these systems were developed and put into operation using traditional automatic classification techniques, which were fed with handdesigned local image descriptors (such as Fourier features), obtaining quite successful results. In the past few years, there have been many advances in the computer vision community with the rebirth of neural networks. In this paper, we leverage how descriptors computed using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) trained with out-of-domain data are useful to replace hand-designed descriptors in the task of estimating the prevalence of each plankton class in a water sample. To achieve this goal, we have designed a broad set of experiments that show how effective these deep features are when working in combination with state-of-the-art quantification algorithms
Hydrophobic RWGS catalysts: Valorization of CO2-rich streams in presence of CO/H2O
Nowadays, the majority of the Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) studies assume somehow model feedstock (diluted CO2/H2) for syngas production. Nonetheless, biogas streams contain certain amounts of CO/H2O which will decrease the obtained CO2 conversion values by promoting the forward WGS reaction. Since the rate limiting step for the WGS reaction concerns the water splitting, this work proposes the use of hydrophobic RWGS catalysts as an effective strategy for the valorization of CO2-rich feedstock in presence of H2O and CO. Over Fe-Mg catalysts, the different hydrophilicities attained over pristine, N- and B-doped carbonaceous supports accounted for the impact on the activity of the catalyst in presence of CO/H2O. Overall, the higher CO productivity (4.12 μmol/(min·m2)) attained by Fe-Mg/CDC in presence of 20 % of H2O relates to hindered water adsorption and unveil the use of hydrophobic surfaces as a suitable approach for avoiding costly pre-conditioning units for the valorization of CO2-rich streams based on RWGS processes in presence of CO/H2O

Synthesis of optimal digital shapers with arbitrary noise using a genetic algorithm
This paper presents structure, design and implementation of a novel technique for determining the optimal shaping, in time-domain, for spectrometers by means of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) specifically designed for this purpose. The proposed algorithm is able to adjust automatically the coefficients for shaping an input signal. Results of this experiment have been compared to a previous simulated annealingalgorithm. Differences between adjusted vs. non- adjusted loads in velocity-based training: consequences for strength training control and programming
Strength and conditioning specialists commonly deal with the quantification and
selection the setting of protocols regarding resistance training intensities. Although
the one repetition maximum (1RM) method has been widely used to prescribe exercise
intensity, the velocity-based training (VBT) method may enable a more optimal tool
for better monitoring and planning of resistance training (RT) programs. The aim of
this study was to compare the effects of two RT programs only differing in the training
load prescription strategy (adjusting or not daily via VBT) with loads from 50 to 80%
1RM on 1RM, countermovement (CMJ) and sprint. Twenty-four male students with
previous experience in RT were randomly assigned to two groups: adjusted loads (AL)
(nD13) and non-adjusted loads (NAL) (nD11) and carried out an 8-week (16 sessions)
RT program. The performance assessment pre- and post-training program included
estimated 1RM and full load-velocity profile in the squat exercise; countermovement
jump (CMJ); and 20-m sprint (T20). Relative intensity (RI) and mean propulsive
velocity attained during each training session (Vsession) was monitored. Subjects in the
NAL group trained at a significantly faster Vsession than those in AL (p < 0.001) (0.88 -
0.91 vs. 0.67- 0.68 m/s, with a 15% RM gap between groups for the last sessions), and
did not achieve the maximum programmed intensity (80% RM). Significant differences
were detected in sessions 3- 4, showing differences between programmed and performed
Vsession and lower RI and velocity loss (VL) for the NAL compared to the AL group
(p < 0.05). Although both groups improved 1RM, CMJ and T20, NAL experienced
greater and significant changes than AL (28.90 vs.12.70%, 16.10 vs. 7.90% and -1.99 vs.
- 0.95%, respectively). Load adjustment based on movement velocity is a useful way to
control for highly individualised responses to training and improve the implementation
of RT programs
Comparación del comportamiento de sistemas provisionales de protección de borde frente a cargas estáticas y de impacto
Temporary Edge Protection Systems (TEPS) are designed to withstand the impact of a worker that walks, stumbles, and falls against them. This is by nature a dynamic action; however, many standards evaluate TEPS when the surface or slope is slightly inclined (less than 10°), applying static requirements. The performance requirements demanded by these standards are assumed to be equivalent to the impact of a worker, however this point has not been tested. In this study, TEPS with tubular steel guardrails and wooden boards of different quality under two types of loads are evaluated using the static requirements detailed in standard EN 13374. TEPS are subjected to an impact energy of 180 J, simulating a worker of 90 kg walking at a speed of 2 m/s. The results demonstrate that the static requirements of EN 13374 are more demanding than the impact of 180 J in all the systems under study.Los sistemas provisionales de protección de borde (SPPB) están diseñados para detener el impacto de un trabajador que camina, tropieza y golpea contra ellas. Esto supone una acción de naturaleza dinámica. Sin embargo, muchas normas evalúan SPPB utilizando requisitos de tipo estático cuando la superficie de trabajo está poco inclinada (menos de 10°) suponiendo que equivalen al impacto de un trabajador. No obstante, este aspecto no se ha confirmado experimentalmente. En este trabajo SPPB con barandillas de tubos de acero y de tablas de madera se han evaluado usando los requisitos estáticos definidos por la norma EN 13374. Posteriormente, se han sometido a una energía de impacto de 180 J, que simula a un trabajador de 90 kg caminando a una velocidad de 2 m/s. Los resultados demuestran que los requisitos estáticos de la norma EN 13374 son más exigentes que el impacto de 180 J en todos los sistemas estudiados
Escala de Calgary para el diagnóstico del síncope vasovagal. Estudio de pruebas diagnósticas
ResumenObjetivoEvaluar la utilidad de la escala de Calgary en el diagnóstico de síncope vasovagal comparada con los resultados de la prueba de mesa inclinada (Tilt test) bajo protocolo sensibilizado con medicamentos.MetodologíaEstudio prospectivo de pruebas diagnósticas en pacientes con sospecha de síncope vasovagal sometidos a prueba de mesa inclinada (Tilt test) con vasodilatación inducida con nitroglicerina por vía sublingual. Se incluyeron pacientes mayores de 18 años de edad y se excluyeron pacientes con cardiopatía estructural documentada.ResultadosSe analizaron 100 pacientes, promedio de 48,7 años (DE 19,7), 69% de género femenino y 4% residentes en área rural. La mediana de síncopes al momento del Tilt test fue de 5 (RIQ 2-15) con presentación del primer episodio a los 41 años (RIQ 21-57), en el 52% de los pacientes no se identificaron desencadenantes y las manifestaciones clínicas referidas en los episodios previos al Tilt test fueron diaforesis (58%), palidez (55%), mareo (70%), palpitaciones (50%) y náuseas (42%); durante el Tilt test se reportaron mareo (65%), diaforesis (19%), náuseas (18%) y visión borrosa (18%). Se obtuvo una sensibilidad del 77,7% (IC95%: 66,7-88,8) y una especificidad del 40,5% (IC95%: 23,3-57,7) para la escala de Calgary.ConclusionesDebido a su buena sensibilidad y fácil aplicación, la escala de Calgary es un instrumento útil para el abordaje diagnóstico de pacientes con sospecha de síncope vasovagal y corazón estructuralmente sano, especialmente en menores de 50 años de edad.AbstractObjectiveEvaluate the utility of Calgary score for the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope compared with the results of the Tilt table test using sensibilized protocol with medicines.MethodologyProspective study of diagnostic tests in patients with suspected diagnostic of vasovagal syncope who underwent tilt table test with induced vasodilation with sublingual nitroglycerin. Patients over 18 years were included and patients with documented structural heart disease were excluded.Results100 patients were analyzed, averaging 48.7 years of age (SD 19.7), 69% of feminine genre and 4% residents in rural area. Medium of syncope at the moment of tilt table test was 5 (IQR 2-15), with presentation of first episode at 41 years (IQR 21-57), in 52% of the patients triggers were not identified and the clinical manifestations referred in episodes previous to Tilt test were diaphoresis (58%), pallor (55%), dizziness (70%), palpitations (50%) and nausea (42%); during the test dizziness (65%), diaphoresis (19%), nausea (18%) and blurred vision (18%) were reported. A sensitivity of 77.7% was obtained (95% CI 88.8 66.7) and specificity of 40.5% (95% CI 23.3 - 57.7) for the Calgary score.ConclusionsDue to its high sensitivity and easy application, the Calgary score is a useful diagnostic approach instrument for patients with suspected vasovagal syncope and who have a structurally healthy heart, especially in those younger than 50 years
eIMRT: a web platform for the verification and optimization of radiation treatment plans
The eIMRT platform is a remote distributed computing tool that provides users with Internet access to three different services: Monte Carlo optimization of treatment plans, CRT & IMRT treatment optimization, and a database of relevant radiation treatments/clinical cases. These services are accessible through a user-friendly and platform independent web page. Its flexible and scalable design focuses on providing the final users with services rather than a collection of software pieces. All input and output data (CT, contours, treatment plans and dose distributions) are handled using the DICOM format. The design, implementation, and support of the verification and optimization algorithms are hidden to the user. This allows a unified, robust handling of the software and hardware that enables these computation-intensive services. The eIMRT platform is currently hosted by the Galician Supercomputing Center (CESGA) and may be accessible upon request (there is a demo version at http://eimrt.cesga.es:8080/ eIMRT2/demo; request access in http://eimrt.cesga.es/signup.html). This paper describes all aspects of the eIMRT algorithms in depth, its user interface, and its services. Due to the flexible design of the platform, it has numerous applications including the intercenter comparison of treatment planning, the quality assurance of radiation treatments, the design and implementation of new approaches to certain types of treatments, and the sharing of information on radiation treatment techniques. In addition, the web platform and software tools developed for treatment verification and optimization have a modular design that allows the user to extend them with new algorithms. This software is not a commercial product. It is the result of the collaborative effort of different public research institutions and is planned to be distributed as an open source project.
