Optical data storage and metallization of polymers
The utilization of polymers as media for optical data storage offers many potential benefits and consequently has been widely explored. New developments in thermal imaging are described, wherein high resolution lithography is accomplished without thermal smearing. The emphasis was on the use of poly(ethylene terephthalate) film, which simultaneously serves as both the substrate and the data storage medium. Both physical and chemical changes can be induced by the application of heat and, thereby, serve as a mechanism for high resolution optical data storage in polymers. The extension of the technique to obtain high resolution selective metallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) is also described
The Moduli Space of the Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory
We present the hyper-elliptic curve describing the moduli space of the N=2
supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with the gauge group. The exact
monodromies and the dyon spectrum of the theory are determined. It is verified
that the recently proposed solitonic equation is also satisfied by our

The E-SCREEN assay as a tool to identify estrogens: an update on estrogenic environmental pollutants.
Estrogens are defined by their ability to induce the proliferation of cells of the female genital tract. The wide chemical diversity of estrogenic compounds precludes an accurate prediction of estrogenic activity on the basis of chemical structure. Rodent bioassays are not suited for the large-scale screening of chemicals before their release into the environment because of their cost, complexity, and ethical concerns. The E-SCREEN assay was developed to assess the estrogenicity of environmental chemicals using the proliferative effect of estrogens on their target cells as an end point. This quantitative assay compares the cell number achieved by similar inocula of MCF-7 cells in the absence of estrogens (negative control) and in the presence of 17 beta-estradiol (positive control) and a range of concentrations of chemicals suspected to be estrogenic. Among the compounds tested, several "new" estrogens were found; alkylphenols, phthalates, some PCB congeners and hydroxylated PCBs, and the insecticides dieldrin, endosulfan, and toxaphene were estrogenic by the E-SCREEN assay. In addition, these compounds competed with estradiol for binding to the estrogen receptor and increased the levels of progesterone receptor and pS2 in MCF-7 cells, as expected from estrogen mimics. Recombinant human growth factors (bFGF, EGF, IGF-1) and insulin did not increase in cell yields. The aims of the work summarized in this paper were a) to validate the E-SCREEN assay; b) to screen a variety of chemicals present in the environment to identify those that may be causing reproductive effects in wildlife and humans; c) to assess whether environmental estrogens may act cumulatively; and finally d) to discuss the reliability of this and other assays to screen chemicals for their estrogenicity before they are released into the environment
Ductus venosus blood flow velocity characteristics of fetuses with single umbilical artery
Objectives: Sonographic Doppler evaluation of the fetal ductus venosus has been proved to be useful in the evaluation of fetal cardiac function. The aim of this study was to investigate the ductus venosus blood flow profile in fetuses with single umbilical artery and to correlate it with the umbilical cord morphology. Methods: Fetuses at > 20 weeks' gestation with single umbilical artery who were otherwise healthy were consecutively enrolled into the study. The sonographic examination included evaluation of the following Doppler parameters: umbilical artery resistance index, maximum blood flow velocity of the ductus venosus during ventricular systole (S-peak) and atrial contraction (A-wave), ductus venosus time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMXV), and pulsatility index for veins (PIV). The cross-sectional area of the umbilical cord and its vessels were measured in all cases. The Doppler and morphometric values obtained were plotted on reference ranges. Results: A total of 88 fetuses with single umbilical artery were scanned during the study period. Of these 52 met the inclusion criteria. The S-peak velocity, A-wave velocity, and TAMXV were below the 5th centile for gestational age in 57.7%, 59.6%, and 57.7% of cases, respectively. The PIV was within the normal range in 80.1% of cases. The umbilical vein cross-sectional area of fetuses with single umbilical artery was above the 95th centile for gestational age in 34.6% cases. Conclusions: The ductus venosus blood flow pattern is different in fetuses with single umbilical artery from that in those with a three-vessel cord. Non-critical, near extremal AdS_6 background as a holographic laboratory of four dimensional YM theory
We study certain properties of the low energy regime of a theory which
resembles four dimensional YM theory in the framework of a non-critical
holographic gravity dual. We use for the latter the near extremal
non-critical SUGRA. We extract the glueball spectra that associates with the
fluctuations of the dilaton, one form and the graviton and compare the results
to those of the critical near extremal model and lattice simulations. We
show an area law behavior for the Wilson loop and screening for the 't Hooft
loop. The Luscher term is found to be . We derive the
Regge trajectories of glueballs associated with the spinning folded string

Chiral Rings of Deconstructive [SU(n_c)]^N Quivers
Dimensional deconstruction of 5D SQCD with general n_c, n_f and k_CS gives
rise to 4D N=1 gauge theories with large quivers of SU(n_c) gauge factors. We
construct the chiral rings of such [SU(n_c)]^N theories, off-shell and
on-shell. Our results are broadly similar to the chiral rings of single U(n_c)
theories with both adjoint and fundamental matter, but there are also some
noteworthy differences such as nonlocal meson-like operators where the quark
and antiquark fields belong to different nodes of the quiver. And because our
gauge groups are SU(n_c) rather than U(n_c), our chiral rings also contain a

Quark mass and condensate in HQCD
We extend the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic model of QCD (HQCD) by including the
scalar bi-fundamental "tachyon" field in the 8-brane-anti-8-brane probe theory.
We show that this field is responsible both for the spontaneous breaking of the
chiral symmetry, and for the generation of (current algebra) quark masses, from
the point of view of the bulk theory. As a by-product we show how this leads to

Regge Trajectories for Mesons in the Holographic Dual of Large-N_c QCD
We discuss Regge trajectories of dynamical mesons in large-N_c QCD, using the
supergravity background describing N_c D4-branes compactified on a thermal
circle. The flavor degrees of freedom arise from the addition of N_f<<N_c D6
probe branes. Our work provides a string theoretical derivation, via the
gauge/string correspondence, of a phenomenological model describing the meson
as rotating point-like massive particles connected by a flux string. The
massive endpoints induce nonlinearities for the Regge trajectory. For light
quarks the Regge trajectories of mesons are essentially linear. For massive
quarks our trajectories qualitatively capture the nonlinearity detected in

Stable Non-Supersymmetric Supergravity Solutions from Deformations of the Maldacena-Nunez Background
We study a deformation of the type IIB Maldacena-Nunez background which
arises as the near-horizon limit of NS5 branes wrapped on a two-cycle. This
background is dual to a "little string theory" compactified on a two-sphere, a
theory which at low energies includes four-dimensional N = 1 super Yang-Mills
theory. The deformation we study corresponds to a mass term for some of the
scalar fields in this theory, and it breaks supersymmetry completely. In the
language of seven-dimensional SO(4) gauged supergravity the deformation
involves (at leading order) giving a VEV, depending only on the radial
coordinate, to a particular scalar field. We explicitly construct the
corresponding solution at leading order in the deformation, both in
seven-dimensional and in ten-dimensional supergravity, and we verify that it
completely breaks supersymmetry. Since the original background had a mass gap
and we are performing a small deformation, the deformed background is

Reflections on Modern Macroeconomics: Can We Travel Along a Safer Road?
In this paper we sketch some reflections on the pitfalls and inconsistencies
of the research program - currently dominant among the profession - aimed at
providing microfoundations to macroeconomics along a Walrasian perspective. We
argue that such a methodological approach constitutes an unsatisfactory answer
to a well-posed research question, and that alternative promising routes have
been long mapped out but only recently explored. In particular, we discuss a
recent agent-based, truly non-Walrasian macroeconomic model, and we use it to
