    Arsenic trioxide downregulates cancer procoagulant activity in MCF-7 and WM-115 cell lines in vitro

The activity of cancer procoagulant after ATO exposure was determined by a specific three-stage chromogenic assay.RESULTS: ATO decreased the CP activity in a dose- and time-dependent manner in MCF-7 cells with no effect on cell proliferation at the same time. However, it affected the CP activity of WM-115 cells in a different way. Reduction in CP activity was followed by an increase after 48 h incubation. The cells viability results showed dose-and time-correlated response within high arsenic concentrations.CONCLUSIONS: Arsenic trioxide downregulates the CP expression in human breast cancer and melanoma cells.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Improving Mammography Rates Among the Hispanic Population: An Evidence-Based Project Utilizing a Promotora Intervention

    Practice Problem: Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in Hispanic women in the U.S., with mammography being the most effective means of reducing breast cancer mortality. Promotoras have been shown to improve health promotion, including mammography, among the Hispanic population. PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In Hispanic women 40 years or older (P), how does the use of a promotora intervention (I), compared to no promotora intervention (C), affect mammography rates (O) within an 8-week period (T)? Evidence: Twenty-one studies that met the inclusion criteria supported the use of promotoras to improve mammography rates. Interventions included education and counseling, navigation assistance, providing a link to resources, and facilitating interaction with providers. Intervention: A promotora was assigned to contact patients with a mammogram order to provide education, counseling, and other assistance needed. Outcome: The intervention improved compliance with mammography rates by 37% over baseline. The results are clinically significant as the cost of the promotora intervention is minimal compared to the benefits of an early-stage diagnosis. Conclusion: The implementation of this project was consistent with the research evidence supporting a promotora intervention to improve mammography rates in the Hispanic population

    Learning Deployable Navigation Policies at Kilometer Scale from a Single Traversal

    Model-free reinforcement learning has recently been shown to be effective at learning navigation policies from complex image input. However, these algorithms tend to require large amounts of interaction with the environment, which can be prohibitively costly to obtain on robots in the real world. We present an approach for efficiently learning goal-directed navigation policies on a mobile robot, from only a single coverage traversal of recorded data. The navigation agent learns an effective policy over a diverse action space in a large heterogeneous environment consisting of more than 2km of travel, through buildings and outdoor regions that collectively exhibit large variations in visual appearance, self-similarity, and connectivity. We compare pretrained visual encoders that enable precomputation of visual embeddings to achieve a throughput of tens of thousands of transitions per second at training time on a commodity desktop computer, allowing agents to learn from millions of trajectories of experience in a matter of hours. We propose multiple forms of computationally efficient stochastic augmentation to enable the learned policy to generalise beyond these precomputed embeddings, and demonstrate successful deployment of the learned policy on the real robot without fine tuning, despite environmental appearance differences at test time.     Elements of Infrastructure Demand in Multiplayer Video Games

    With the advent of organized eSports, game streaming, and always-online video games, there exist new and more pronounced demands on players, developers, publishers, spectators, and other video game actors. By identifying and exploring elements of infrastructure in multiplayer games, this paper augments Bowman’s (2018) conceptualization of demands in video games by introducing a new category of ‘infrastructure demand’ of games. This article describes how the infrastructure increasingly built around video games creates demands upon those interacting with these games, either as players, spectators, or facilitators of multiplayer video game play. We follow the method described by Susan Leigh Star (1999), who writes that infrastructure is as mundane as it is a critical part of society and as such is particularly deserving of academic study. When infrastructure works properly it fades from view, but in doing so loses none of its importance to human endeavor. This work therefore helps to make visible the invisible elements of infrastructure present in and around multiplayer video games and explicates the demands these elements create on people interacting with those games
