Lorentz transformations that entangle spins and entangle momenta
Simple examples are presented of Lorentz transformations that entangle the
spins and momenta of two particles with positive mass and spin 1/2. They apply
to indistinguishable particles, produce maximal entanglement from finite
Lorentz transformations of states for finite momenta, and describe entanglement
of spins produced together with entanglement of momenta. From the entanglements

(Never) Mind your p's and q's: Von Neumann versus Jordan on the Foundations of Quantum Theory
In two papers entitled "On a new foundation [Neue Begr\"undung] of quantum
mechanics," Pascual Jordan (1927b,g) presented his version of what came to be
known as the Dirac-Jordan statistical transformation theory. As an alternative
that avoids the mathematical difficulties facing the approach of Jordan and
Paul A. M. Dirac (1927), John von Neumann (1927a) developed the modern Hilbert
space formalism of quantum mechanics. In this paper, we focus on Jordan and von
Neumann. Central to the formalisms of both are expressions for conditional
probabilities of finding some value for one quantity given the value of
another. Beyond that Jordan and von Neumann had very different views about the
appropriate formulation of problems in quantum mechanics. For Jordan, unable to
let go of the analogy to classical mechanics, the solution of such problems
required the identication of sets of canonically conjugate variables, i.e., p's
and q's. For von Neumann, not constrained by the analogy to classical
mechanics, it required only the identication of a maximal set of commuting
operators with simultaneous eigenstates. He had no need for p's and q's. Jordan
and von Neumann also stated the characteristic new rules for probabilities in
quantum mechanics somewhat differently. Jordan (1927b) was the first to state
those rules in full generality. Von Neumann (1927a) rephrased them and, in a
subsequent paper (von Neumann, 1927b), sought to derive them from more basic
considerations. In this paper we reconstruct the central arguments of these
1927 papers by Jordan and von Neumann and of a paper on Jordan's approach by
Hilbert, von Neumann, and Nordheim (1928). We highlight those elements in these
papers that bring out the gradual loosening of the ties between the new quantum
formalism and classical mechanics.Comment: New version. The main difference with the old version is that the

Thin and lumpy: an experimental investigation of water quality trading
Water quality trading schemes in the United States can predominantly be characterized by low trading volumes. In this paper we utilize laboratory economics experiments to explore the extent to which the technology through which pollution abatement is achieved influences market outcomes. Mirroring the majority of water quality trading markets, the sessions utilize small trading groups composed of six participants. To understand the extent to which abatement technology influences trading behavior, the experimental treatments vary the degree of heterogeneity in initial abatement costs and the potential for long-lived investments in cost-reducing abatement technology.Environmental Economics and Policy,
Maps for Lorentz transformations of spin
Lorentz transformations of spin density matrices for a particle with positive
mass and spin 1/2 are described by maps of the kind used in open quantum
dynamics. They show how the Lorentz transformations of the spin depend on the
momentum. Since the spin and momentum generally are entangled, the maps
generally are not completely positive and act in limited domains. States with
two momentum values are considered, so the maps are for the spin qubit
entangled with the qubit made from the two momentum values, and results from
the open quantum dynamics of two coupled qubits can be applied. Inverse maps
are used to show that every Lorentz transformation completely removes the spin
polarization, and so completely removes the information, from a number of spin
density matrices. The size of the spin polarization that is removed is

Measurements of greenhouse gases and related tracers at Bialystok tall tower station in Poland
Quasi-continuous, in-situ measurements of atmospheric CO2, O2/N2, CH4, CO, N2O, and SF6 have been performed since August 2005 at the tall tower station near Bialystok, in Eastern Poland, from five heights up to 300 m. Besides the in-situ measurements, flask samples are filled approximately weekly and measured at Max-Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry for the same species and, in addition, for H2, Ar/N2 and the stable isotopes 13C and 18O in CO2. The in-situ measurement system was built based on commercially available analysers: a LiCor 7000 for CO2, a Sable Systems "Oxzilla" FC-2 for O2, and an Agilent 6890 gas chromatograph for CH4, CO, N2O and SF6. The system was optimized to run continuously with very little maintenance and to fulfill the precision requirements of the CHIOTTO project. The O2/N2 measurements in particular required special attention in terms of technical setup and quality assurance. The evaluation of the performance after more than three years of operation gave overall satisfactory results, proving that this setup is suitable for long term remote operation with little maintenance. The precision achieved for all species is within or close to the project requirements. The comparison between the in-situ and flask sample results, used to verify the accuracy of the in-situ measurements, showed no significant difference for CO2, O2/N2, CH4 and N2O, and a very small difference for SF6. The same comparison however revealed a statistically significant difference for CO, of about 6.5 ppb, for which the cause could not be fully explained. From more than three years of data, the main features at Bialystok have been characterized in terms of variability, trends, and seasonal and diurnal variations. CO2 and O2/N2 show large short term variability, and large diurnal signals during the warm seasons, which attenuate with the increase of sampling height. The trends calculated from this dataset, over the period August 2005 to December 2008, are 2.02±0.46 ppm/year for CO2 and -23.2±2.5 per meg/year for O2/N2. CH4, CO and N2O show also higher variability at the lower sampling levels, which in the case of CO is strongly seasonal. Diurnal variations in CH4, CO and N2O mole fractions can be observed during the warm season, due to the periodicity of vertical mixing combined with the diurnal cycle of anthropogenic emissions. We calculated increase rates of 10.1±4.4 ppb/year for CH4, (-8.3)±5.3 ppb/year for CO and 0.67±0.08 ppb/year for N2O. SF6 shows only few events, and generally no vertical gradients, which suggests that there are no significant local sources. A weak SF6 seasonal cycle has been detected, which most probably is due to the seasonality of atmospheric circulation. SF6 increased during the time of our measurement at an average rate of 0.29±0.01 ppt/year

Affine maps of density matrices
For quantum systems described by finite matrices, linear and affine maps of
matrices are shown to provide equivalent descriptions of evolution of density
matrices for a subsystem caused by unitary Hamiltonian evolution in a larger
system; an affine map can be replaced by a linear map, and a linear map can be
replaced by an affine map. There may be significant advantage in using an
affine map. The linear map is generally not completely positive, but the linear
part of an equivalent affine map can be chosen to be completely positive and
related in the simplest possible way to the unitary Hamiltonian evolution in

Red Blood Cells from Individuals with Abdominal Obesity or Metabolic Abnormalities Exhibit Less Deformability upon Entering a Constriction.
Abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) are multifactorial conditions associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus. Previous work has demonstrated that the hemorheological profile is altered in patients with abdominal obesity and MS, as evidenced for example by increased whole blood viscosity. To date, however, no studies have examined red blood cell (RBC) deformability of blood from individuals with obesity or metabolic abnormalities under typical physiological flow conditions. In this study, we pumped RBCs through a constriction in a microfluidic device and used high speed video to visualize and track the mechanical behavior of ~8,000 RBCs obtained from either healthy individuals (n = 5) or obese participants with metabolic abnormalities (OMA) (n = 4). We demonstrate that the OMA+ cells stretched on average about 25% less than the healthy controls. Furthermore, we examined the effects of ingesting a high-fat meal on RBC mechanical dynamics, and found that the postprandial period has only a weak effect on the stretching dynamics exhibited by OMA+ cells. The results suggest that chronic rigidification of RBCs plays a key role in the increased blood pressure and increased whole blood viscosity observed in OMA individuals and was independent of an acute response triggered by consumption of a high-fat meal
