The validity of observational measures in detecting optimal maternal communication styles: Evidence from European Americans and Latinos
This study examined the sensitivity of an observational coding system for assessing positive and negative maternal behaviors of Latino and European American mothers toward their adolescent children. Ninety Latino (54 Spanish speaking and 35 English speaking) and 20 European American mother-adolescent dyads participated in an observational study of conversations about sexuality, AIDS, and conflicts. Associations were examined between observed maternal positive and negative behaviors and adolescent-reported relationship quality. Results indicated that maternal negative responsiveness was negatively associated with relationship quality for all ethnic/language groups. However, maternal positive responsiveness was related to relationship quality for European Americans but not for Latinos. These findings suggest a need for a broader definition of positive parenting in Latino families. © Copyright © 2007, Society for Research on Adolescence.postprin

A short-term longitudinal study of correlates and sequelae of attachment security in autism
In this short-term longitudinal study, thirty preschool-aged children with autism were first observed in Ainsworth’s Strange Situation procedure and, separately, interacting with the primary caregiver in the home. One year later, each child completed both a developmental assessment and an observational assessment of empathic responding. Behaviors typical for children with autism were distinguished from behaviors suggestive of relationally based attachment disorganization. Forty five percent of the children were classified as securely attached. The secure group demonstrated language skills superior to those of the insecurely attached group, concurrently and during the follow-up. Compared to parents of children who were insecurely attached, parents of securely attached children were rated as more sensitive. Compared to both organized insecure and disorganized children, secure children were rated as more responsive to an examiner’s apparent distress during the follow-up relative to their ratings at intake, whereas empathy ratings of children with insecure classifications did not increase. Importantly, attachment security was associated with empathy above and beyond the contribution of children’s language level. The auxiliary use of LANDSAT data in estimating crop acreages: Results of the 1975 Illinois crop-acreage experiment
The author has identified the following significant results. It was found that classifier performance was influenced by a number of temporal, methodological, and geographical factors. Best results were obtained when corn was tasselled and near the dough stage of development. Dates earlier or later in the growing season produced poor results. Atmospheric effects on results cannot be independently measured or completely separated from the effects due to the maturity stage of the crops. Poor classifier performance was observed in areas where considerable spectral confusion was present
Avoiding catastrophic failure in correlated networks of networks
Networks in nature do not act in isolation but instead exchange information,
and depend on each other to function properly. An incipient theory of Networks
of Networks have shown that connected random networks may very easily result in
abrupt failures. This theoretical finding bares an intrinsic paradox: If
natural systems organize in interconnected networks, how can they be so stable?
Here we provide a solution to this conundrum, showing that the stability of a
system of networks relies on the relation between the internal structure of a
network and its pattern of connections to other networks. Specifically, we
demonstrate that if network inter-connections are provided by hubs of the
network and if there is a moderate degree of convergence of inter-network
connection the systems of network are stable and robust to failure. We test
this theoretical prediction in two independent experiments of functional brain
networks (in task- and resting states) which show that brain networks are
connected with a topology that maximizes stability according to the theory.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figure

Enzyme-level interconversion of nitrate and nitrite in the fall mixed layer of the Antarctic Ocean
In the Southern Ocean, the nitrogen (N) isotopes of organic matter and the N and oxygen (O) isotopes of nitrate (NO_3^−) have been used to investigate NO_3^− assimilation and N cycling in the summertime period of phytoplankton growth, both today and in the past. However, recent studies indicate the significance of processes in other seasons for producing the annual cycle of N isotope changes. This study explores the impact of fall conditions on the ^(15)N/^(14)N (δ^(15)N) and ^(18)O/^(16)O (δ^(18)O) of NO_3^− and nitrite (NO_2^−) in the Pacific Antarctic Zone using depth profiles from late summer/fall of 2014. In the mixed layer, the δ^(15)N and δ^(18)O of NO_3^− + NO_2^− increase roughly equally, as expected for NO_3^− assimilation; however, the δ^(15)N of NO_3^−-only (measured after NO_2− removal) increases more than does NO_3^− -only δ^(18)O. Differencing indicates that NO_2^− has an extremely low δ^(15)N, often < −70‰ versus air. These observations are consistent with the expression of an equilibrium N isotope effect between NO_3^− and NO_2^−, likely due to enzymatic NO_3^- - NO_2^− interconversion. Specifically, we propose reversibility of the nitrite oxidoreductase (NXR) enzyme of nitrite oxidizers that, having been entrained from the subsurface during late summer mixed layer deepening, are inhibited by light. Our interpretation suggests a role for NO_3^- - NO_2^− interconversion where nitrifiers are transported into environments that discourage NO_2^− oxidation. This may apply to surface regions with upwelling, such as the summertime Antarctic. It may also apply to oxygen-deficient zones, where NXR-catalyzed interconversion may explain previously reported evidence of NO_2^− oxidation
Threshold and non-linear behavior of lasers of and V - configurations
Dynamic properties of closed three level laser systems are investigated. Two
schemes of pumping - and V - are considered. It is shown that the
non-linear behavior of the photon number as a function of pump both near and
far above threshold is crucially different for these two configurations. In
particular, it is found that in the high pump regime laser can turn off in a
phase-transition-like manner in both and V schemes.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Topology of the conceptual network of language
We define two words in a language to be connected if they express similar
concepts. The network of connections among the many thousands of words that
make up a language is important not only for the study of the structure and
evolution of languages, but also for cognitive science. We study this issue
quantitatively, by mapping out the conceptual network of the English language,
with the connections being defined by the entries in a Thesaurus dictionary. We
find that this network presents a small-world structure, with an amazingly
small average shortest path, and appears to exhibit an asymptotic scale-free

Play and Developmental Outcomes in Infant Siblings of Children with Autism
We observed infant siblings of children with autism later diagnosed with ASD (ASD siblings; n = 17), infant siblings of children with autism with and without other delays (Other Delays and No Delays siblings; n = 12 and n = 19, respectively) and typically developing controls (TD controls; n = 19) during a free-play task at 18 months of age. Functional, symbolic, and repeated play actions were coded. ASD siblings showed fewer functional and more non-functional repeated play behaviors than TD controls. Other Delays and No Delays siblings showed more non-functional repeated play than TD controls. Group differences disappeared with the inclusion of verbal mental age. Play as an early indicator of autism and its relationship to the broader autism phenotype is discussed
Helping and Cooperation in Children with Autism
Helping and cooperation are central to human social life. Here, we report two studies investigating these social behaviors in children with autism and children with developmental delay. In the first study, both groups of children helped the experimenter attain her goals. In the second study, both groups of children cooperated with an adult, but fewer children with autism performed the tasks successfully. When the adult stopped interacting at a certain moment, children with autism produced fewer attempts to re-engage her, possibly indicating that they had not formed a shared goal/shared intentions with her. These results are discussed in terms of the prerequisite cognitive and motivational skills and propensities underlying social behavior
The Angola Gyre is a hotspot of dinitrogen fixation in the South Atlantic Ocean

Communications Earth & Environment, 3(1), (2022): 151, https://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-022-00474-x.Biological dinitrogen fixation is the major source of new nitrogen to marine systems and thus essential to the ocean’s biological pump. Constraining the distribution and global rate of dinitrogen fixation has proven challenging owing largely to uncertainty surrounding the controls thereon. Existing South Atlantic dinitrogen fixation rate estimates vary five-fold, with models attributing most dinitrogen fixation to the western basin. From hydrographic properties and nitrate isotope ratios, we show that the Angola Gyre in the eastern tropical South Atlantic supports the fixation of 1.4–5.4 Tg N.a−1, 28-108% of the existing (highly uncertain) estimates for the basin. Our observations contradict model diagnoses, revealing a substantial input of newly-fixed nitrogen to the tropical eastern basin and no dinitrogen fixation west of 7.5˚W. We propose that dinitrogen fixation in the South Atlantic occurs in hotspots controlled by the overlapping biogeography of excess phosphorus relative to nitrogen and bioavailable iron from margin sediments. Similar conditions may promote dinitrogen fixation in analogous ocean regions.
