Non-dynamic origin of the acoustic attenuation at high frequency in glasses
The sound attenuation in the THz region is studied down to T=16 K in glassy
glycerol by inelastic x-ray scattering. At striking variance with the decrease
found below 100 K in the GHz data, the attenuation in the THz range does not
show any T dependence. This result i) indicates the presence of two different
attenuation mechanisms, active respectively in the high and low frequency
limits; ii) demonstrates the non-dynamic origin of the attenuation of THz sound
waves, and confirms a similar conclusion obtained in SiO2 glass by molecular
dynamics; and iii) supports the low frequency attenuation mechanism proposed by
Fabian and Allen (Phys.Rev.Lett. 82, 1478 (1999)).Comment: 3 pages, 5 Figures, To be published in PR
Residual Symmetries in the Spectrum of Periodically Driven Alkali Rydberg States
We identify a fundamental structure in the spectrum of microwave driven
alkali Rydberg states, which highlights the remnants of the Coulomb symmetry in
the presence of a non-hydrogenic core. Core-induced corrections with respect to
the hydrogen spectrum can be accounted for by a perturbative approach.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Europhysics Letter
ACUTE EFFECTS OF STRENGTH TRAINING ON RUNNING ECONOMY
Sequencing strength training before aerobic conditioning is practised without empirical support. This study explored the acute effects of strength training on running economy and 3-D kinematics in five males. Running was performed on a treadmill at 12 and 14 km/h on three separate occasions. Trial 1 and 2 involved no strength training with data used to assess response stability of the variables. Before Trial 3, three sets of three repetitions at 85% of 1 repetition maximum of squat, bench press and deadlift with 3-5 minutes of rest were performed. Compared to Trial 2 no significant differences were observed when strength training was performed. Only a tendency of increased knee flexion (4.5°) at foot strike at the higher running velocity was observed. This suggests that running kinematics were changed exposing participants to long-term chronic injuries
Spin, Statistics, and Reflections, II. Lorentz Invariance
The analysis of the relation between modular PCT-symmetry -- a
consequence of the Unruh effect -- and Pauli's spin-statistics relation is
continued. The result in the predecessor to this article is extended to the
Lorentz symmetric situation. A model \G_L of the universal covering
\widetilde{L_+^\uparrow}\cong SL(2,\complex) of the restricted Lorentz group
is modelled as a reflection group at the classical level. Based
on this picture, a representation of \G_L is constructed from pairs of
modular PCT-conjugations, and this representation can easily be verified to
satisfy the spin-statistics relation

Absorption spectrum in the wings of the potassium second resonance doublet broadened by helium
We have measured the reduced absorption coefficients occurring in the wings
of the potassium 4S-5P doublet lines at 404.414 nm and at 404.720 nm broadened
by helium gas at pressures of several hundred Torr. At the experimental
temperature of 900 K, we have detected a shoulder-like broadening feature on
the blue wing of the doublet which is relatively flat between 401.8 nm and
402.8 nm and which drops off rapidly for shorter wavelengths, corresponding to
absorption from the X doublet Sigma+ state to the C doublet Sigma+ state of the
K-He quasimolecule. The accurate measurements of the line profiles in the
present work will sharply constrain future calculations of potential energy
surfaces and transition dipole moments correlating to the asymptotes He-K(5p),
He-K(5s), and He-K(3d).Comment: 2 figure
Hundred photon microwave ionization of Rydberg atoms in a static electric field
We present analytical and numerical results for the microwave excitation of
nonhydrogenic atoms in a static electric field when up to 1000 photons are
required to ionize an atom. For small microwave fields, dynamical localization
in photon number leads to exponentially small ionization while above quantum
delocalization border ionization goes in a diffusive way. For alkali atoms in a
static field the ionization border is much lower than in hydrogen due to
internal chaos.Comment: revtex, 4 pages, 5 figure
Genetic structure of Tribolium castaneum populations in mills
We investigated the genetic diversity and differentiation among nine populations of Tribolium castaneum using eight polymorphic loci, including microsatellites and other insertion-deletion polymorphisms (=”indels”). Samples were collected in food processing/storage facilities located in Kansas, Nebraska, California, Louisiana, Florida and Puerto Rico. Standard population genetic analysis was applied, and an assignment test was used to assign individuals to their genetic population. All loci were polymorphic across populations, with the number of alleles per locus-population combination varying from three to fourteen. Among 72 locus-by-population combinations, 31 deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, which was associated with a deficiency in heterozygosity. Tribolium castaneum populations show some level of genetic structuring. Genetic differentiation between populations, using FST estimates, was significant, with FST varying from 0.018 to 0.149. AMOVA indicated that 8.32% of the variation in allele frequency resulted from comparisons among populations. Genetic distance was not significantly correlated with geographic distance. Correct assignment to the genetic population was possible in only 56% of all individuals. Together, these results revealed that geographically distinct populations of T. castaneum had low to moderate levels of genetic differentiation that was not correlated with geographic distance, and the genotypic profile of the individuals did not provide enough information for fingerprinting them with their source population.
